Tundra

  • 60,992 miles
Our 2000 Toyota Tundra (with ~60,000 miles) was parked it in my relatives driveway on 10/18/09. When we went to drive it out of my aunt's driveway on 10/18/09, she started yelling, "stop, something is leaking!" looked at the front drivers brake line and saw a hole that was pushing out brake fluid with high pressure when brakes were applied. Thankfully, the brakes failed in the driveway instead of on route 2 between albany, NY and Massachusetts. If they failed on the drive, my husband would likely have been killed on the mountainous road. Carefully drove the truck to the nearest dealership, lia Toyota of colonie on 10/18/09. Told them about the broken brake line and asked for a frame inspection to be done first, as we did not want to put money into the truck if the frame had issues. On 10/26/09, we finally received an estimate for the work and documentation stating "the frame has normal rust wear for the age of the vehicle" and "the frame has no perforation at this time". the estimate said that the front driver brake lines and junction box were rusted through. The emergency brake pivot was rusted & seized on both sides and completely inoperable, and the front sway bar link was rusted through. Since we were told by lia Toyota of colonie that the frame was intact (no holes) we authorized the work. We picked up our repaired Tundra on 11/02/09 and kept the old parts. The emergency brake did not hold the car and needed adjustment, so the following day, 11/3/09, we took it to our local dealer, colonial Toyota of milford. We asked for a brake adjustment and a frame inspection. The next day, 11/04/09, I received a call from colonial Toyota, saying that our Tundra frame had holes in it and we "should not put another dime into it" and "it is not safe to drive". colonial service took pictures of the perforated frame and called the Toyota reps, who came and looked at our Tundra. On 11/10/09, we were notified that Toyota declined to repair or replace our frame.

2000 Toyota Tundra rust issues. Cracked frame due to excessive rust, both cab mounts are rusted completely, and collapsed. Cab is now resting on bed. Cross members are rusted completely through. Had to remove spare tire so it wouldn't fall from the truck.

2000 Toyota Tundra frame rust safety issue I could not have the front bumper replaced due to extensive rust damage. I contacted Toyota and they recommended a frame inspection and charged $98 dollars to tell me that there was perforated rust at 9 different inspection point and there was nothing that they could do about it. I believe that this vehicle is unsafe to drive and I contacted the "Toyota experience" and then opened a case only to tell me there was nothing that they could do about it. I believe since this is the same manufacturing defect that they admitted to on the Tacoma they should be held accountable for it on the Tundra.

Tundra

Was driving at 65 mph on the highway and my spare tire that is mounted beneath the truck fell off and fortunately bounced off the road instead of into oncoming traffic. I inspected the frame in the area of the tire mount and found it to be almost entirely corroded. There is similar corrosion on the frame in the vicinity of the rear axle, however it is not quite as bad.

(1). I purchased a new 2000 Toyota Tundra extended cab limited at price Toyota in Delaware. In February 2009 I observed rust through of bracket from bed to frame visible through rear wheel well. Requested that my wife report this to Liberty Toyota in NJ during routine 5000 mile oil change. She was told that this was "not a problem". (2). In September 2009 truck was again taken to Liberty Toyota for 5000 mile oil change, purchase of 5 new tires and alignment. Liberty Toyota service told my wife that the truck was rusted to the point where they could no longer align the vehicle and no service was performed. Liberty took photos of the underside of the truck and transmitted them to Toyota. Approximately two weeks later Liberty told my wife that Toyota's position was that because of the age and mileage (9 years and 110,000 miles ) that they would do nothing to resolve this issue. (3). In late September 2009 I purchased a 2006 Toyota Tundra crew cab 4 door Tundra limited as a replacement vehicle for my wife a Toyota runnemead, NJ. On that same occasion the 2000 Tundra was put on lift and inspected with a powerful light. Observed various rust through of brackets and at least one fist sized hole through the frame. This was witnessed by the Toyota runnemeade sales person, general manager, sales manager, and service manager. All agreed that this was worst case of rust they had seen, and were of the opinion that the truck was not safe to operate. (4). In October 2009 I contacted Toyota customer service and received a case number. A few days later I again contacted Toyota customer service and was told that "Toyota is studying the problem". this sounded like a stall tactic and gave me little hope for any voluntary positive action from Toyota. As of today 11 November 2009 I have had no further contact from Toyota. (5). I have purchased or helped purchase 5 Toyota trucks for my family. Total expenditure approximately $150,000.

Frame is rusting out..there are holes near the frame shackles that are rusted through...this all appeared within a year and a half..contacted local Toyota dealership and also logged a customer complaint to Toyota headquarters. To date nothing is being done by Toyota to correct this dangerous condition. Please look into this...I'm not the only one with this problem.

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra. It suffers from severe frame and undercarriage rust. The rust and metal is literally flaking off in large sheets. My steering fluid lines corroded and burst causing loss of fluid and power steering at highway speeds last fall. This spring my rusted brake line burst and caused complete loss of brakes. My wife was coming out of a business onto a four lane highway. She had to drive it into a ditch to avert a T-bone collision on the main highway. I can hear unexplainable sounds from the rear frame area and my current mechanic tells me that the vehicle will not be inspected when due. I understand others have had similar problems and I want to assure you that there are many more out there just like me. The vehicle has otherwise been mechanically sound. Toyota has no recall notice and I have gone through there process before to no avail. There needs to be a recall insisted upon.

The contact owns 2000 Toyota Tundra/SR5. He discovered corrosion on the driver-side rear and passenger wheels. Years later the corrosion began falling off of the vehicle onto his drive-way. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the technician stated that the entire frame was corroded. The manufacturer took report number 0910139204. The manufacturer has not confirmed if they will assist with the failure. The failure mileage was 30,000. The current mileage was 40,000.

Our 2000 Toyota Tundra has continuously let us down in several areas such as; brake vibration, and the emergency brake cam arms are rusted so when releasing the parking brake, the shoes stay engaged, dragging on the brake pads causing warped drums. We have had a cracked exhaust manifold since 35K miles, transmission failure at 63K miles, continuous oxygen sensors issues (including two that fell out), broken sway bar mount, rusted tailgate mounts, and now the extreme frame rust. The truck is being eaten away by rust, causing parts to break and even fall off. Now the extensive frame rust has caused parts to fall off, and break. The latest is the passenger side spring shackle mount that was cracked and flexing, and now has completely broken off allowing the spring to rest along the underside of the body. We are very disappointed because this truck has been completely unreliable; it will not pass inspection and is now completely unsafe to drive.

Tundra

  • 150,000 miles
Last year I was driving my 2000 Toyota Tundra and heard a thud from the rear of my truck. I pulled over to discover my spare tire hanging from the supporting cable. Apparently, the support frame for the spare tire disintegrated from corrosion to the point where it could no longer support the weight of the spare tire and failed. Luckily the cable did not fail and kept the spare attached with the truck. After further investigation, heavy corrosion was observed throughout the frame. This failure has only occurred once. A mechanic offered to attach a piece of angle aluminum as a support so I could at least stow my spare tire for emergencies. Due to the condition of the existing support frame, this angle aluminum support is only temporary. Further overall deterioration of the frame is a significant safety concern for myself and others on the road. Photos are available upon request.
