When temps near freezing and the vehicle is cold when driving around 55 and rounding a curve the steering will lock up just after 10 degree of wheel movement. The power steering locks up like you hit a maximum limit and then releases.. happens about 2 to 3 times then goes away for the rest of your drive. Does not happen when warm. It has happened ever since the day I bought it.

The Jeep starts to shake while driving and it is hard to hold onto steering wheel. Feels like you have no control. The mileage odometer goes from 999,999 back to correct one. It is a brand new 2018. Can't get the steering part because it is on back order. We didn't even get a notice about recall. I am so blessed my daughter has not been in an accident going to and from college

problem #873

Feb 072021

Wrangler

  • 20,000 miles
The steering wheel locks up while driving. This especially happens in cold weather. The steering wheel is either difficult to turn / slow to respond to turning, or, on one occasion (Feb 7, 2021), it locked up completely while driving on the highway. I was trying to follow a curve in the road and the vehicle did not respond. I had to stop the car to get the wheel to unlock. This issue has been going on for the last month, and culminated in the very alarming episode on Feb 7. after googling this issue, I'm aware that it is a very common problem in Jeep Wrangler (like mine) purchased in late 2017 through early 2018. I purchased my Jeep in Feb, 2018. I've notified Chrysler and my dealership. My dealership informs me that it is likely the gearbox, but they are on a 3 week back order. I'm afraid to drive my vehicle, but am taking it to my dealership tomorrow (Feb 9) to be diagnosed, and hope to arrive there safely.

problem #870

Jan 292021

Wrangler

  • 10,000 miles
For some reason when driving over 60mph and under 40 degrees outside, the steering wheel sticks or becomes very stiff when attempting to turning right during a curve in the road or when changing lanes. The danger is that it will then suddenly un-stick and cause the vehicle to swerve to the right. The first time it happened was in 2018. There was a dealer software programing update that was performed however each winter when the temperature drops below 40 the issue still occurs.

Jan 152021

Wrangler

  • 42,000 miles
The power steering will lock up at highway speeds usually over 30 mph and will come back on when the speed goes below 30mph. This is a major safety issue as it is very difficult to turn when the power steering goes out. Also, when it randomly comes back on the vehicle will overcorrect due to the power steering coming back on. I have taken it in to two dealerships and they have yet to fix this issue.

problem #865

Jan 162021

Wrangler

  • 36,000 miles
Death wobble occurs at speeds around 60 mph, triggered by small bumps on the road. Extreme shaking occurs on the steering of the vehicle. The wobbling, when it is triggered, continues even if the road is smooth after the bumps. The wobbling is not a vertical vibration from the road, it is a left-right vibration on the steering, which then causes violent shaking of the whole vehicle. This happens in highways at regular cruising speeds 60 mph on straight road segments, typically after going through a small patch of irregular (little bumpy) road, like a bridge or an overpass on the highway. I have had about 5 visits to the dealer in Jeep-Chrysler of morgantown, wv and they claim that since they cannot replicate the condition, there is nothing they can do. But this is a recurring problem since the car was new.

The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while traveling at various high speeds, the vehicle wobbled uncontrollably without warning after going over a bump in the roadway. The contact took the vehicle to glendale Dodge Chrysler Jeep (900 S brand blvd, glendale, ca 91204) where it was acknowledged that the dealer was familiar with the death wobble failure. The contact was referred to the manufacturer for assistance. The manufacturer also stated that the failure was familiar and that engineers were working on a remedy to replace the power steering gear box. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.

On hundreds of occasions the last three years of ownership, I have had serious steering problems with death wobble, steering wander, and locked-up steering. Dealers have performed warranty work on the track bar and steering stabilizer in the past. However, these remedies have not corrected my issues. Jeep has announced a service bulletin of the steering box, but has not issued a recall for the part. I'm persuaded that this part is responsible for hundreds of counts of this issue. The part has been silently used in newer production Jeep, but for those of us that have the first model year (and over basic warranty mileage) are left with this burden. I persistently have locked-up steering, more often prone in a colder climate, and have had hundreds of near-death experiences from this issue. The steering wheel is difficult to turn and at highway speeds the vehicle is unable to be turned. With enough force and significant braking I am able to free the steering from center into the direction of travel. Many times the vehicle performs an over correction after becoming unstuck. I personally feel deathly afraid of my Jeep and have recently cancelled upcoming trips into Colorado's mountains because I have had experiences on the mountain passes this winter that have been too terrifying. I'm ready to sell my Jeep, but knowing of its problem, I'd be devastated to find out my vehicle killed the next owner. It's absurd that myself and much of the Jeep Wrangler community have had to rely solely on the aftermarket industry to replace stock components in order to feel comfortable operating our vehicles - Jeep should be fully responsible for their failed engineering. For context, I have upgraded the track bar, drag link, tie rod and others to industry-best components in an attempt to address these issues after Jeep's warranty replacements couldn't. Jeep must fix these steering issues!

This Jeep Wrangler unlimited rubicon was purchased used with 26000 miles. On the test drive it seemed ok however, on the drive home after purchast (about 90 miles) I noticed that the steering wandered. At times it was difficult to keep in the correct lane on the interstate without very close attention and constant correction. Very irritating and tireing. Thinking it was maybe wind, (I traded a 2013 Jeep unlimited rubicon) I later drove it on a day with no wind. It did the same wandering. There is something unusual about the steering of this vehicle.
