CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.
From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.
By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

I parked the car in the garage and heard a noise. After searching the whole car, the fuel pump was stuck on. I turned car on and off thinking it would reset and it did not. I had to pull the fuse to turn off the pump. I took it to the dealer and was told that the tipm was bad and will cost $1500 to replace.
Car was shut off, locked and parked in motel parking lot. 45 minutes later, call was made to room that it had rolled across lot, down a hill and crashed into a tanker truck which was refueling @ a gas station. Car was running and in drive. I am doubly sure car had been shut off, placed in park, and locked securely. Weather had been extremely hot that day (+100 degrees).

My wife was driving the vehicle across a busy intersection, an intersection where 2 lanes merge into one on the far side. She was in the through lane, the left lane. Our vehicle lost all engine power. Cars were merging from the right and no one could comprehend that our vehicle was in a failure mode. With engine not running, and bells ringing which no idea why the bells, the power-steering was inoperative and the brakes were very ineffective. She was trying to get the vehicle off to the side of the road, without hitting anyone or being hit. Somehow, she avoided an accident. She's a very small in stature person and it took all she had to steer and stop this 5200 pound Jeep. After letting the Jeep sit, it started up after multiple attempts and we went directly to the Jeep dealership. They plugged in a code-reader, found no codes, and sent us on our way. They would not provide us with a repair work order so we have no paper work. They know what's wrong but are avoiding the issue. It's the tipm! this issue has continued to occur and the fuel pump isn't running when in the failure mode. Sometimes the horn blows by itself! we've had the wipers not function and the window not roll up. The vehicle is haunted. What does it take for a recall NHTSA?
When pressing start button, engine cranks for about 8 seconds and won't fire. Can press start button again, sometimes starts on 2nd or 3rd try, sometimes not until the 6th try. Problem progressed to a condition where the engine was running, but sputtered and did not want to stay running. Was able to drive vehicle home since it wasn't far away. Tow truck has taken Jeep to the dealer and am waiting for part to arrive from New York but have been told it may not be available. Parts and labor are not covered by warranty, dealer states that gas tank needs to be removed for the repair.
While driving in outerbanks, nc. The vehicle decided to shut the 4X4 system off and lower suspension completely, all while driving. My new born son, wife and 4yr old daughter in the vehicle and we are stranded. Paid for towing and after towed the vehicle goes back to normal with no maintenance. Upon returning home vehicle randomly shuts off while in motion, will not start or fuel pump randomly runs and now way to shut off. After some research I am finding this is a common problem with the tipm in these vehicles. You are not able to get the parts as they are on back order and nothing is being done to the manufacturer. Who do we complain to if this happens while my children are in the car and there is an accident. This seems like this will be the only way something is going to be done about this issue.
While driving the ABS, and tracking lights came on. Made it home, and notice that the fuel pump continued to run when the ignition was turned off. Started the Jeep back up, and the brake pedal went to the floor. Had Jeep towed to thd Dodge dealership. Estimated cost, 1,300.
Vehicle would not start. Dealer replaced fuel pump relay, mentioned many people were having this issue and that Chrysler may have/need to recall so keep receipt. Suspect it may be the tipm.
My Jeep failed to start on the first 4 attempts. This was one of the many times it has failed to start. My service tech told me it needs a tipm, total integrated power module and that they are know by Jeep to be defective and Jeep needs to recall these before there are anymore accidents. I was also told it will take weeks for a replacement tipm due to the demand of the bad ones being replaced. I was also told this is around a $1300 repair. I bought a extra 5 years warranty and now need to get a rental and have it fixed before it leaves me stranded along the road.
On August 14, 2014 my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee would not start. Over the next two weeks the starting issued got continually worse. The day I took it into the shop to have looked at it took 8 to 12 times to start. The vehicle will crank but not start. The technician performed diagnostic testing and found no fuel pressure when not starting. Technician found fuel pump not being turned on when key is turned. Technician installed a relay overlay harness for tipm circuit. Diagnosis - faulty tipm.
Had a problem starting the vehicle. Took it to the dealer on 8/27. Was told it could be the tpim and/or fuel pump. Parts are ordered, but they have no idea of when they'll arrive. Now I'm in a rental.
Vehicle would not crank over when attempted to start. After several attempts, vehicle eventually started. Flash updates were previously performed on the vehicle to address this issue; however, updates did not prevent issue. Dealership diagnosed problem as faulty tipm. Tipm replaced.
Vehicle power shuts down while driving at highway speed, in any and all driving conditions. No power steering, no power brakes, no power, nothing. There is no warning when power goes out. Driver can be stranded in middle of freeway, or off-ramp, or busy intersection. Extremely dangerous. Worse than GM issue. Vehicle cannot be restarted without shifting into park. 2011 Jeep stall on 70mph freeway requires driver to shift into park before a re-start can be attempted (neutral will not allow rolling start). Extreme danger of high-speed rear end collision. Well documented issue on web 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee tipm. Recall is needed for this safety critical item. gotaclassaction.com/Chrysler-investigated-over-defective-totally-integrated-power-module-tipm-in-2011-2012-Jeep-grand-Cherokee-and-Dodge-durangos/
Vehicle was traveling on highway at 55 mph when it suddenly stalled in traffic. Could not restart after pushing to side of road. Towed to dealer and told that total integrated power module had failed and needed to be replaced.
Several attempts were made throughout the day to start my 2011 grand Jeep Cherokee and it would not start, only a clicking noise. I took it to the dealer immediately and the tipm is bad and needs to be replaced. Obviously, my car is only 3 years old and not under warranty now. The part alone is over $900, which seems questionable that something would go bad so quickly on a vehicle and cost so much to repair. Besides the cost, there are so many complaints for the same issue, and even more serious with the engine cutting off while driving. Is someone going to recall this item before someone gets hurt or even killed"???" I purchased this vehicle, and all my previous Chrysler/Jeep vehicles thinking they were safe for my family; now I'm not so sure. Do the right thing and recall the tipm! in addition, I have made several attempts to get the brake booster repaired due to the recall and the parts are still not in. This has been going on for months now.
The tipa is defective and the fuel pump won't turn on, therefore my car is unable to start. I have to pay $1300 to repair this as the car is now out of warranty. I have done research and learning this is an extremely common defect in the Jeep.
Tipm computer board/module defect...known defect to the manufacturer (poor part product with high chance of failure). Jeep stalled out on road several times with kids in car...part is on a national backorder and still no recall for owners.
