From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.
By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

Vehicle began experiencing sporadic and intermittent hard crank starts as well as partial stalling while traveling. When placing the key/push button to the "on" position, the fuel pump would engage, but was quickly followed by a "click" noise, which shutoff the fuel pump. Eventually, after 6-12 attempts, the fuel pump would engage long enough to allow the vehicle to start. While traveling, rpms would suddenly drop, typically while braking/slowing from traveling. After progressively getting worse and more consistent, vehicle taken to dealership. Initial diagnosis was a failing fuel pump. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the electrical relay to the fuel pump, a part of the tipm, was shorting and prematurely failing. A bypass relay was re-wired and seems to have corrected the problem.
There have been multiple occurrences. While driving down the road at the speed limit, all of a sudden the speed drops to 38 mph and the vehicle will go no faster. You can not accelerate beyond 38 mph, unless you pull over to the side of the road and shut the vehicle off. Then when you start the vehicle back up it is ok.
After having occasional difficulties starting the car, my problems finally reached a climax when my car shut off mid-drive. Jeep has explained that I have faulty tipm. I have found through online research that this is very common. These failures have been occurring for years, yet Jeep still installs these same tipms. I understand there is a pending class action lawsuit, suggesting that Jeep has known about this problem and ignored it, rather than implementing a recall.
Bought a used Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011 w/ 19K miles on it (it was leased before). First incident happened with 30K miles on it. Vehicle would turn over a little bit but would not start. Dealership said fuel pump was bad, running after vehicle turned of then didn't get power when turning it on. Dealership replaced fuel pump, went to pick it up from dealership and it wouldn't start. Second trip (within 2-3 days) to dealership it started up. Worked fine for about 4-5 weeks, then same incident occurred again. Vehicle would turn over but not start up, sounded the exact same as the prior issue. Dealership replaced the tipm, car worked fine for about 12 months. Two weeks ago, the same issue came about. Car turning over but not starting. This time the dealership replaced my key fob and it worked for 1 day, then the same issue occurred. Now my Jeep is sitting at another dealership and they have replaced the wiring to the fuel pump and now they are in the process of replacing another fuel pump. I heard today that they fuel pump is replaced but still not getting power to it (tipm problem again). Chrysler wants me to pay a deductible for an obviously faulty part that they have replaced again. This last time when I brought my Jeep to the dealer I tried to start the vehicle to let me father hear the noise it was making. A dealership service technician walked by hearing the noise it made and asked, "is it a 2011?", I replied, "yes", he followed up by saying that model and year has had a recurring problem with the tipm, which from what I have read online is extremely dangerous, especially if the car were moving and it went out. You would be left without power steering and brakes. Chrysler has made a product that is faulty and realizes it, yet they still charge customers to replace the faulty parts.

My 2011 Jeep gc has been experiencing starting issues for the last few months which I attributed to some form of fuel delivery issue. After putting in a higher octane gas and fuel cleaner I thought I had remedied the issue. However, recently the start up issue became so prevalent so I had to take my vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis. The dealer indicated the cause was a defective totally integrated power module (tipm). After paying for the service to replace the tipm I went online to better understand the problem. In doing so I discovered multiple other Jeep owners are experincing the same issue. Based on my reading of the complaints Jeep should be handling the defective tipm as a recall issue due to installing the faulty product during the production of the vehicles.
Vehicle fails to start multiple times. Turned off while backing up multiple times. It is currently on a Jeep service dealer, they indicated failure on the "tipm" module. The replacement is on backorder, with no specific date for arrival and installation.
2011 Jeep Cherokee, problems with cranking and fuel pump not shutting off sometimes when vehicle is off. Vehicle is not starting properly but will start after several tries. Then the fuel pump will continue to run when the vehicle is off. Dealership stated it is a faulty relay switch built into the tipm (totally integrated power module) so you have to replace the entire tipm at the cost of 1,000 for the part. And, the part is not available at the moment, on national back order. Hundreds others are having this problem. Fuel pump could just cut off at any moment because of a $10 relay switch that is built into the tipm. This should be a recalled item due to faulty switch inside the tipm that is leaving hundreds of people stranded without a vehicle while they wait on a single part for weeks!
Vehicle fails to start multiple times. Came close to stalling a few times. Same symptoms as mentioned by many with the tipm module. I believe this to be a very important safety issue as well as financially and emotionally. No warning as to when and where the problems can arise.
The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that upon inspection, the starter would not engage without warning. The contact also mentioned that when the fuel tank was below half full, the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician stated that the starter and the auxiliary starter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 18,000.
Vehicle: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4, purchased new in October 2010. I experienced difficultly in starting vehicle, problem persisted and became worse. Dealership indicated bad fuel pump, replaced at a cost of $1,000 +. starting problem persisted and again back too dealership. Diagnosis this time was bad starter module (tipm unit) cost $1,000 + and I was told that the part was on "extreme" back order and they could not even give me an estimate on the arrival date. I was also informed that the bad tipm had created an electrical short that had led to the initial failure of the fuel pump. Present: Eight (8) weeks have passed and no part available and a vehicle sitting in my driveway gathering the leaves of the change of the season. I have been a loyal Jeep owner for the past 25 years with at least seven (7) vehicles. This one is the most problem plagued vehicle of them all, with major electrical/computer problems. I did not list all the problems (electrical and other wise ) that occurred in the first 36,000 miles for thankfully they were cover by warranty. I must say I will hard pressed to purchase another Chrysler (Jeep) product in the future. This one has to be towed into the dealership to be repaired (new tipm) before I can drive it to another dealership and hope for a good trade in!!!

The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic which located the failure at the totally integrated power module (tipm). The tipm remained activated and allowed the fuel pump to remain operating when the engine was turned off, causing the engine to fail. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000 and the current mileage was 44,000.
Just bought this vehicle from a used dealership, car won't start or it shakes when is trying to start, did some research on line, there's seems to be too many incidents on this SUV models, we should have a national recall on this matter, the issue seems to be the tipm, I'm going to take it to the local Jeep dealer to have check out. I am extremely worry that my car will die while I'm driving at a high speed and end up in a bad car crash because of this issue, please! please!! look it to this matter. Vehicle will not start using key fob or push button start. Vehicle cranks for 5 to 10 seconds and then shuts down. Dealership diagnosed problem as a bad tipm (totally integrated power module), a common problem nationwide. Parts and labor to replace the tipm is $1200. Chrysler/Jeep at 800-247-9753 stated they would not assist.
2011 Jeep Cherokee showing symptoms of same wide spread problem with starting issue. Vehicle cranks over but does not start. Must attempt numerous times until started. While driving, if vehicle dies all loss of power steering and brakes is lost and is a huge safety concern. My vehicle has 40K+ miles and problem seems to be pervasive problem throughout model year.
My 2011 Grand Cherokee overland has an intermittent starting problem. Not always, but a couple of times a day, it will not start the first time, it cranks and cranks but doesn't start, this last for 10 secs approx then shuts off, this might last anywhere from 1 to 4 attempts, then will start right up. Sometimes it will start and then fade out, like out of gas. Over the weekend the time between starts was more lengthy and at one point it shut off and drifted into an intersection. Jeep is "looking into the situation" which according to the internet is widespread. I was told a recall will not occur since its not a safety issue. I was stranded at a rest stop in rural Pennsylvania at 11:30 pm over the weekend, I think that's a safety concern. My costs associated with this issue will exceed $2000K and dealerships are only aloud to order one part a week since its on national back order. Any time a new vehicle that is well maintained strands you or stalls and drifts into an intersection, its a concern. The issue is random and can be unexpected. Please investigate.
My vehicle is having trouble starting and my fuel pump continues to pump after the vehicle is off which is killing my battery. I've only had the car for a year and its only two years old.
Tipm- I went to start my Jeep this morning that felt like a weak start up, it then hiccuped and died. Thinking it maybe just a one time incident, tried again, with the result of the starter just cranking for about 5-6 seconds. This repeated multiple more times before I called a tow truck to take to a local mechanic. It was diagnosed with bad fuel pumps, and the cost to replace was $1600. This prompted me to call the dealership and ask if that's even possible. After explaining the issue at hand, the service manager told me that he doesn't believe the issue to be caused by faulty pumps, but from the tipm. This is obviously not the first time he has heard of this issue. I then did some research on the web and found this to be a pretty prevalent issue amongst owners of this year, make, and model. When I called him back to see if the backorder issues were true, he told me it would take around three weeks to get the part. I immediately asked for the Jeep corporate number, called them, and began to speak to a guy about it there. He told me that the production rate was one per 7 days... and that coupled with there are tons of these cases out there is why it was going to take a while to get the part. He went on to tell me that sounds crazy, but its just how fast, (or slow) they are producing them. I asked if the new product was a replica of the original and he said this is a solution for the previous one and would fix the problem, not just a bandaid. He advised me to have it fixed and hope the recall comes and I would be eligible for a reimbursement. With the price of this fix being so high and the amount of people affected, this has to be recalled. Please have anyone having this issue file a complaint here. This customer service rep told me there just hasn't been enough formal complaints about it to validate a recall....
Thanks for the chance to post, I too have been experiencing the same issue. I noticed it a few weeks ago when my battery started showing signs of going dead. I also heard the noise after exiting the truck in the evenings. I thought the noise was some electronics resetting itself, but thought it would eventually shutoff. I did not think this could be killing my battery. I too had to buy a battery thanks cost me a pretty penny now to learn it too would be dead soon. After going to the dealership today for an oil change the truck died in their service bay. Not even five minutes after leaving, the service rep called me and explained how they had to push my truck to their service bay due to a bad totally integrated power module (tipm). We are now with out a vehicle for an undisclosed time and still have the obligation to pay for a product of no use. Chrysler has to find way to address this or it can cost them dearly in reputation and in the pocket if the results don't get better. A recall would be a start but people are without vehicles with monthly payments! not a good look Chrysler looks like a class action situation.
My 2011 overland began hesitating while driving on Friday 9/6. was able to return home safely. Turned off the engine and then was unable to restart the vehicle. Had the vehicle taken to a local dealership and was told that the tipm module had failed which Chrysler is aware of the faulty part and has already changed manufacturers. I was told due to a back order the dealerships are limited to ordering only one module per week and therefore no eta could be given for my vehicle's repairs. I called the Chrysler corporate offices and was told that they would attempt to expedite the part and I could rent a car and submit my bill for "possible" reimbursement. This is a failure on a number of levels that a company that is now flush with cash again due to a gov't bailout has the parts to crank out new vehicles but will leave paying customers with no information other than to "be patient". I will not attempt to buy american again. Back to Acura I go!
