This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
While driving, could step on the brake pedal and feel the brakes pulsating. Also, had noticed rotors overheating and got out of round. After every eight thousand miles, rotors had to be replaced. Consumer feels the brakes are underdesigned and needs to utilize a splash shield to aid in the cooling of the brakes.
I have repeatedly replaced the rotors on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. At highway speeds the braking is uneven and pulsates jerking the steering wheel. Chrysler has replaced the rotors every 6000 miles on my vehicle but has not been able to solve the problem. When the dealer is questioned about the problem they say that it continues with the 2000 and 2001 models. Obviously Chrysler is not addressing the problem. If I do not replace the brakes the problem gets worse. This is a dangerous situation and Chrysler ignores nlm
Vehicle continues to pull right after 2 alignments. Random, loud mechanical clunk coming from right underside when going over small bumps or drop-offs. Brake pedal shudders again after having rotors replaced first, then more recently lapped via on-vehicle lathe. Steering ticks / clunks at random. Moan from under hood when turning at slow speeds. Acrid white smoke from under left hood getting into passenger compartment when spinning 4-wheels in snow.
For 7 to 10 miles when applying brakes there is jerking and pulsation, dealer stated that front brake rotors were warped. Consumer states keyless remote works intermittently. The battery failed, the head lights come on by themselves when it was in auto setting and the parking lights also come on at times due to multifunction switch failure.

While picking up vehicle at dealership from brake service and upon leaving parking lot at about 20 mph, vehicle stalled. Consumer returned to dealership, and mechanic stated transmission had to be rebuilt. *akconsumers main complaint is about the brake/rotors which have been ground and replaced 3 times in less than three years.
While applying brakes and without warning, the front end of vehicle would shake violently, consumer had to replace the brakes 3-4 times.. consumer stated the rotors had to be replaced 3 times.
While driving 55-60 mph, applied brakes and vehicle started to shake. Mechanic stated rotors needed to be replaced. Many Jeep were experiencing these problems. The rotors were turned or replaced three times.
Rotors have warped after about 7000 to 8000 miles resulting in lurching when trying to stop vehicle. Front rotors have been replaced twice and all rotors resurfaced 4 times by dealer, 3 times under warranty and 3 times at my expense. As rotors get bad, stopping distances increase and vehicle is difficult to control when stopping from highway speeds. Vehicle has only been driven in Florida, and has not been driven in salt water or off-road. First problem reported to dealer when vehicle was 8 months old and had 9294 miles on odometer. The problem recurred again, each time, approximately 7000 to 9000 miles following the last brake service.
The front brake rotors on this vehicle have warped four times. The first occurred July 1999 at 6125 miles, the rotors were turned on the vehicle at this time. The second instance occurred October 2000. The front rotors and pads were replaced at this time. The third occurence came at 32,460 miles in August 2001. The front rotors were turned at this time. The brakes began to chatter again at around 38,000 miles and are getting progressivly worse. There has to be something wrong with either the design of this braking system, or the material used in the manufacture of the brake rotors. Four times in 39,000 miles seems to be a high incidence for a vehicle used only for commuting. The dealer was very good about taking care of the first three incidences under warranty. I doubt if this will continue now that the warranty has run out, and the extended warranty does not cover brakes.
Rotors are shot and it seems I'm not the only one, 4 wheel drive will not disengage even after I shift it out of 4 wheel drive (large popping noise when it does disengage). Rear wiper works sometimes and othertimes it won't. now I'm being told the transfer case is leaking and needs to be replaced (seal and shaft). At 53,000 miles these items seem ridculous. I've checked around on the internet and it seems like others have the same problems.
Steering problem would occur when brakes were applied. Vehicle taken to dealer, and informed consumer of front brake rotor failure.. dealer would not correct problem under warranty, consumer took vehicle to to a repair facility where the rotors and pads were replaced because of extensive damage. Consumer is seeking reimbursement.
Rotors keep warping every 6000 to 1000 miles. Daimler Chrysler will no longer repair/replace the rotors. This is a safety issue. The steering wheel vibrates wildly and you have to hold on and I'm sure it is not braking properly due to the warpage. They continually get worse until you cannot drive the jgc until they are replaced. There was an earlier recall on these and DaimlerChrysler has not fixed the problem. They should be made responsible for the rotors until they coorect the problem. The recall should continue on every jgc until they fix the problem. They should not be allowed to push the replacement cost of replacing the rotors off onto the consumer.they should not be allowed to put these vehicles on the road until this is fixed or they are made fully responsible for the replacement.
Rotors warped at under 10,000 miles. Dealership did not replace but resurfaced and in another 8,000 miles same problem occurred. Dealership would not accept full responsibility for inherent defect.
Both front brake rotors have been replaced 3 times. The rear rotors have been been replaced 2 times. The front rotors are being replaced every 8,000 miles on the average. This is a serious flaw in brake rotors. Chrysler needs to redesign the rotors with slots and/or a different material.
Brakes have reacurring warped rotors - on 4th set of front rotors. Brakes produce severe shimmy when braking at freeway speeds side to side motion of steering wheel at all speeds.
Since buying this vehicle in 1999, I have had to replace the rotors or have them turned at least 2-3 times per year. I have talked to many people about this problem. I have even talked to Jeep technicians. Everyone tells me that Jeep had a bad batch of metal in 1999. If this is true, why do they not recall all 1999 Jeep? I know that it takes a certain amount of complaints or accidents before something is done. For now I quess that I can only hope for the NHTSA to get the ball rolling. It would be much appreciated by all 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners.
Consumer stated when applying brakes, the vehicle will vibrate, consumer took vehicle to the dealer, and dealer indicated the rotors were warped.. also the rear taillight lens was broke, the lug nut covers were replaced.
A vibration can be felt in the brake pedal when brakes are applied at any speed. Dealer has yet to be contacted. Consumer stated when coming to a stop at highway speed, the steerng wheel vibrates, dealer informed consumer that the front rotors were out of round, driver side seat belt cover snapped off.
