This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Jeep Grand Cherokee front brakes continuously have rotor problems. Extreme vibration/shimmy/grabbing front brakes at all speeds. Dealer says warped rotors are common and nothing can be done to prevent this from happening. Rotors must be urned/replaced every few thousand miles.
Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. When driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. Consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. Then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. Also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. Recall campaign; component: Fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. The consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. The consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. Fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. The consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. When sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. The left outer cv boot was leaking. The engine light came on. The consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear.
Since I owned this vehicle it has been a hazard safety for me and my family.I can honestly say im afraid even to sell it and pass the problem on to someone else.until someone gets killed is when Jeep will finally due something about it.the brakes and rotors are constantly warping or failing.constant shuddering/vibrating in slow speed stop and high speed decelaration stop.on this site alone there is 326 complaints about the same issue, but nothing is being done.dealer just turns rotors and fixes pads.how many times do you actually turn a rotor.come on already.there is a class action lawsuit against Chrysler in effect right now as im writing this.it is only valid for Kansas/missour residents only.hello the rest of the country has the same problem with the Cherokee.rotors and pads have been serviced only nothing else.I took the vehicle to another brake shop for a second opinion.they stated to me the rotors are not appropriate for this vehicle and Jeep should have replaced them along with new calipers.all a want is an end to this problem.I replaced the rotors and pads again at my expense.still same problem.I previously had 2 Jeep before earlier models with no problems.I guess Chrysler has lost another customer.
Brakes do not react properly when trying to stop. Rotors and pads were serviced at least three times. Manufacturer examined vehicle, and stated no defects were found.

4th time I'm replacing rotors/pads on '99 Jeep gr Cherokee, vehicle has 52,000 miles...replacing rotors every 10,000 miles" ridiculous!!!! braking on the highway at around 55 mph, whole vehicle shudders with high chance of lost of control of front end. This is a life threatening defect, why isn't Jeep doing something"
Had front brakes serviced May 2003 new rotors, pads. August 2004 had to have new calipers, pads and rotors resurfised. Because calipers failed and almost started tire on fire. Told there is a service bulliten ref putting on different calipers.
Front brake rotors continuously warping on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Chrysler refuses to ultimately fix the problem or continue to pay for repairs. Brakes vibrate loudly when breaking at speeds above 35 mph. Vehicle has been in for this problem 3 times and car only has 36,000+ miles on it. Repairs only last a few months before problem recurs rather suddenly, causing brakes to "shimmy" with loud vibrations. Chrysler refuses to accept responsibility and attributes it to "driver habits/patterns". my local Jeep service shop says they are caught in the middle. They are well aware of the problem but can't get the parent company to accept responsibility.
Dealer replaced at 11,000 miles the front rotors and pads. At 16,000 miles, the front rotors and pads were replaced. At 35,000 miles the rotors were resurfaced and the pads were replaced. At 45, 000 miles the dealership indicated they needed to replace the calipers, and install a bigger caliper. The warping front rotors caused pulsating brake pedal and an uncontrollable steering wheel.
The brake rotors on 1999 Jeep grand cheerokee warped every 7-10,000 miles. This is well documented on the web. Jeep has issued all new brake parts (rotors, pads, calipers) but refuses to pay for the retrofit.
Nar 06/19/2003. The consumer experienced problems with the disk brakes ever since purchasing the vehicle. The calipers and rotors had to be replaced four times and need to be done again. The consumer requested that daimler Chrysler own up to the problem and repair or continue to replace defective parts to maintain a safe vehicle.
Brake problems on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.rotors warped as per defect on calipers. Jeep made a fix or I, but makes you pay for it. Must change rotors everytime brakes are changed due to defect. This also affects braking. This is what caused accident. Brakes will pulsate when rotors warp, and make braking harder.
Braking shudder at 55 mph and higher caused by apparent rotor warping. This warpage has happened several times; therefore, rotors have been turned several times to present at which time now I needed replacement. With new replacement rotors it is still exhibiting violent shudder. Technical service bulletin has addressed this problem with suggestion to replace another item as well, a caliper assembly but there is no recall on this matter. My wife is scared to drive this on the freeway for fear of the violent shudder. I am surprised at the lack of Chrysler to recall this vehicle for this problem. I am simply amazed at the amount of complaints you have received to this date on this matter and yet no response.
I bought a "5-star certifed " low mileage 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from russwood motors. Lincoln, ne. Brake pulsation was noted on test drive, and dealer agreed to correct before delivery. Again after a short time and very few miles, the puslation reappeared. Russwood again agreed to correct this. Later this pulsation came back, worse. I had the brakes serviced at another location. Later, last winter the pulsation became progressivley worse. In South texsas for the winter, we elected to wait till we returned to Nebraska so russwood could permanently correct the problem. Russwood advised the repair was covered by Jeep service bulletin 05-003-02-rev.B (and prior), my warranty had just expired, and the repair would be at my expense, amounting to about $600. I telephoned the Jeep customer serivice line and got a terse reply that Jeep would not assume any responsibility nor expense for the service bulletin repair. I emailed the Jeep customer service and got another terse reply reporting my problem had "already been addressed" and they would file my commnication. Jeep will perform this repair if I have to call in ralph nader. Jeep by their bulletin acknowledges a known safety problem and an original design deficiency. Application of brakes at highway speeds results in a wild shimmying and dodging. It must be corrected.
When the brakes were applied at highway speed the vehicle shimmied. Every 6 to 10 thousand miles the rotors were replaced. The warped rotors caused the front end to shimmy when braking at higher speeds. Chrysler was not willing to remedy the problem.
The brake rotors warped every 10,000 miles on my way to 50,000 miles. The dealer told me it was either a problem with the brakes or a problem with the driver. The dealer further said that they knew there was no problem with the brakes.
1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. Have had numerous incidents with the brake rotors warping. I've replaced them twice up to this point and they are requiring a 3rd fix. Currently the vehicle has 64,000 miles on it. I'm averaging 20,000 miles between replacements. Jeep knows about this problem since the brake rotors are on a national backorder but I was told by the service manager that my problems were an "isolated incident".
