This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
My 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo had a new differential install edat 15,000 miles; two new front rotors at 36,000 and should have been done way before this; back brake drum cracked at 36,000 miles; front rotors redone again at 42000 miles; and now the motor at 52,000 miles. We had not indication (noise, etc) of the motor going, I was traveling aroung 5-10 miles per hour turning into our road and it felt like something heavy dropped out of the vehicle, it sounded like metal going through a fan. A piece of the block fell out onto the road and the people at the local dealer said they had never seen any thing like it before. It was like a bomb went off inside the motor. My question -- should chyrsler be responsible for this motor, it will be in the range of $6,000. Thank you.
Brakes vibrate at high speed and cause lurching at low speed. Rotors refaced twice and replaced once. Now problem has returned. After reviewing the NHTSA web site and finding numerous other complaints, it is obvious this is not an isolated incident but a recurring problem on this vehicle. It should be fixed!
With only 35000 miles on vehicle, consumer has had it serviced four times for brakes and is needing to have it serviced again, consumer was informed that the brake pads seemed to have been designed or assembled with too tight clearance, causing rotors to warp from the heat generated during braking.
Brake rotors severely warped without any hard use or towing. Common and recurring problem for this vehicle. Affects safety in stopping, especially with ABS. New rotors are good for only a few thousand miles. There is a serious part/design problem with these brakes. Ironic since Jeep touted the brakes as the best in class in advertising. Chysler refuses to acknowledge or act on this widely reported problem. I am unable to identify a brand of rotors that will stand up to the vehicle demands without warping. There should definitely be a recall on these brakes after a fix has been devised.
The rotors failed in March of 2000 and were replaced by a dealer and have now been replaced a second time. I did note that there have been several technical service bulletins published on this same subject. Jeep needs to be more responsible about the correction of this obvious defect. Thank you.

The car steering vibrates excessively when brakes applied at 60 mph. Chrysler replaces the rotors but the problem returns after approx 4 to 5 thousand miles. If left un checked the vehicles' safety is jeapardized. All 1999 Jeep gand Cherokee owners I have talked to (>10) indicate that they have the same problem. Chrysler mechanics agree. Chrysler has replaced the rotors for corrosion but the problem is probably related to vibration shortening the life of the rotors.
Vehicle has been in dealer's repair shop 5 times for brake failure. Rotors were replaced at 36,000 miles/ 48,000 miles, and new rotors were put on. At 55,000 miles /68,000 miles/ 72,00 miles rotors were turned again. However, rotors needed to be replaced again. Vehicle started shaking when brakes were applied. Vehicle has no problem stopping. Manufacturer did not have a solution.
When appyling brakes extreme vibrations occurs within front wheels due to pads / rotors and calipers prematurely wearing out, cause unknown. Dealer has replaced warped rotors and brakes several times, consumer has even had recall work done on rotors which is not resolving problem. Door panel warped and splitting at bottom, dealer replaced. Vehicle hard to start in the morning time, dealer replaced faulty fuel pump.

Rotors on this vehicle warp at approximately every 10,000 miles. When applying brakes on highway, the vehicle violently shakes and you begin to loose control of the vehicle.
Per dealer diagnosis, there are excess front rotors run out and thickness variance, which contribute to excess vibration when breaking and might cause failure to stop at low speed. Dealer also told me there are many similar conplaints about similar problems and the quality of rotor is very bad.
We have had the rotors "shaved" at 12,000 miles, supposedly replaced at 22,000 miles and started having problems again at 31000 miles car vibrates violently, driver seat belt keeps jamming, the differential had to be replaced and the fuel pump had to be replaced
One resurface and two replaced rotors under warranty; seems to need third set of rotors in less than 34,000; warped rotors effects control of car while braking. Need NHTSA to open file and investigate. This is a serious safety problem and a recall is mandated.
All four brake rotors wore out excessively which has caused vibration in steering wheel when applying brakes. Brake rotors have been resurfaced every ten thousand miles. Consumer has contacted dealer, and dealer has turned the rotors. However, problem still occurs. Consumer states air conditioner was not cold enough.
Front rotors warped at 8,225 miles. 3 more times since. Dealer replaced once and resurfaced once. Owner paid other 2 times. This is a defective break system. Should be recalled & new brake system installed.
At speeds of 50 to 65 mph, hard shimmy during normal braking. Dealer discovered warped rotors, and replaced under 12mo/12,000mi warranty. At 9,000 miles and 8 months later same problem developed. Warped rotors again. Dealer advised I'm out of warranty and would pay for repairs. Very dangerous problem making the vehicle harder to control as problem worsens. Service dept. Acknowledges there's a problem, but seems to be hoping it'll go away!
