Vehicle was left running, idling and door left opened. When consumer got out to checked mail box vehicle rolled back in reverse very fast. Vehicle jumped a curb, crossed a residential street, and on its way back across and up a small hill, consumer ran and jumped inside to stop vehicle.
Put vehicle in park and got out to check mail, walked around back of vehicle to move trash cans, and noticed vehicle moving backwards. It kept moving. Was able to grab bumper, but not stopping vehicle. Driver's door was still open, and was not able to get in. Vehicle went down an embankment, backwards, but was not totaled. Vehicle landed on driver's door.
Vehicle started rolling backward while idling in park. No other consumers/vehicles were involved in this incident. Driver's side door, left open when consumer exited the vehicle, was damaged when it impacted a mailbox.
I was driving down the road and had to stop to remove something that was in the road. I placed the Jeep in park and left my vehicle. After I left the vehicle, it started rolling backwards and struck the car behind me. I thought at the time that the transmission had slipped from park to reverse but I did not have it checked out since it only happened once. Now I am reading that there is an investigation into the exact problem with the Jeep.
Vehicle was parked in driveway with emergency parking brake in up positon when it jumped from park to reverse, causing front driver's side door to be knocked off the hinges, and the rear of vehicle to be smashed in. Estimated damage to vehicle was four thousand dollars. Consumer contacted dealer for problem, but informed consumer that situation was impossible for that vehicle.

Vehicle was parked with engine running, emergency brake not applied, suddenly vehicle went backward, consumer opened drivers door and knocked consumer down as she tried to jump into vehicle to stop it, vehicle came to a stop when it hit a rock fence, consumer was bruised, and hit her head on drivers door. Damage to vehicle $ $3000.
My Jeep was on level ground. I put it into "park" with the engin, E still running in order to get out of the vehicle to momentarily check on something. Perhaps 30 seconds later when I was about 15 feet from the vehicle, it jumped into reverse and rammed into two cars parked behind it. There were no passengers in the Jeep. No one in the cars was hurt. The Jeep was not damaged but the two cars were. The incident was reported to my insurance company.
While driving 60 mph, vehicle shifted into reverse, causing it to stall, dealer replaced parts of transmission. Consumer states vehicle was seen by three different repair shops before the problem was detected.
Vehicle was in "park" with the engine running. Driver got out to remove something from the driveway. The vehicle suddenly started going in reverse. Driver tried to stop it by opening the drivers side door. Before the driver could get in, the door got caught on someting in the garage and pinned the drivers leg, crushing it. The vehicle continued to go in reverse until the door was bent all the way back. Something got wedged under the vehicle, stopping it from going any further, although the wheels were still turning. Unable to free her leg, she started screaming for help. A neighbor came to the rescue, confirming that the shift lever was indeed in the "park" position. The vehicle has hence been named "christine". the dealer was unable to locate the problem.
While warming up Jeep in garage on flat surface I proceded to exit vehicle to return to the house, upon closing the door the Jeep began to roll backwards I attempted to open the door and return to the vehicle I was unable to enter the vehicle drug me out the garage the front driver's door was bent forward to the bumper by the side of the garage I was squished between the side of the garage and the Jeep. Upon leaqving the garage I continued to attempt to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake with my hands I was unable to do this imy feet slipped on the ice in the driveway and I fell beneth the vehicle. The left front wheel ran over my left leg at the calf. Ithe vehicle continued to roll until it came to a stop in a pile of snow against a light pole on the opposite side of the streed. At that time the vehicle started to roll forward and was stopped by the snow. The driver's door could not be closed, the engine would not start due to hitting the light pole with the bumper the collesion device was activated. I was taken to the emergency room with damaged nerves and tissue luckily no broken bones. The vehicle was taken to the Jeep dealer in anchorage Alaska where they replaced some parts and fixed the door. No action was taken despite my attempts at that time to notify the manufacturer through the dealer of the defective system that allowed the Jeep to slip into reverse.
I have experienced two incidents in the past three months involving my placing the vehicle into "park" and having the vehicle move in reverse while idling. There is also a frequent locking of the shift mechanism after sitting for periods. The shifter becomes locked in the "park" position and I must use force to remove the shifter from the "park" position. This produces the sound of breaking plastic although I notice no other adverse affects to the shifting. I had thought on both occassions when the car went into reverse on its own that I had merely misplaced the shifter, but now I think not. Please keep me informed as to any possible manufacturer adjustment or recall of the problem.
In January of 2000, I put my vehicle into the park position, without the emergency brake on, and left it idling. I got out of the car, and when I turned around my car had rolled back and crashed into two other vehicles. I recently read an article in the denver post concerning this exact situation, while idling with the gear shift in the park position they "inadvertantly rollaway in reverse". the amont of damages I reported was for repairs to my vehicle only. My insurance provider will have the other amounts. Please send me any and all information concerning this matter. Thank you.
Jeep was in park for about 30 secs. Returned to Jeep and found it starting to move in reverse. It picked up speed and in running after it I fell and hurt my knee. Got back up and chased Jeep for about 50 ft. It backed up into uphill driveway and slowed down. I was able to open door and pull parking brake which stopped Jeep. I noticed that it still was in park.
Vehicle would not engage into gear. Also, had to put vehicle in neutral, and it revved up to red. Can hear a noise when starting vehicle to roll back. At that point it will go into gear. Please add VIN.
Vehicle shifted suddenly and unexpectedly from park to reverse while idling resulting in a collision and property damage to another vehicle. Please provide additional information.
My wife was going to work on 08/14/00. She warmed the Jeep up, drove up to the porch, left the engine running and placed the Jeep in park. While inside the house, she noticed the Jeep suddenly lurched and started moving backwards( this was on a nonpaved flat surface).. she ran out the house to try and stop it, but too late. Luckily, it drove through my pump house in the back yard. The wheels rolled over a 4" high cement base which lodged the wheels to a stop.. it had shoved out the door and side of a 10' X 10 ' shed covering my water pump. It put a dent in my rear hatch door top and busted the rear left turn signal. I did not report it to police because it was in my yard and it did not dawn on me the transmission may have jumped out of park. However, on approximately April 12,2001 I had placed it in park, with the engine running, when suddenly it jumped in reverse with me still sitting in the seat. I immediately braked and again placed the shifter into park. Nothing happened again, so I just shrugged it off as one of those things. But the other day I was talking with another Jeep owner who had the same thing happen. So, I would like to report this incident in case others have had the same problem. I do not leave my Jeep running in park at any time now, I do not trust it. Plus, with the warranty runout, I fiqured nothing would be done about it anyway and I would just go through a lot of expense checking it for nothing. But, I do believe there is some kind of intermittent problem with these transmissions.
Vehicle was placed in park with motor running. Driver exited automobile to pick up mail. Driver noticed that vehicle was moving backwards and attempted to reenter vehicle to stop it. Driver knocked down by door and vehicle rolled over both legs causing an offset fracture in right fibia and trauma to left foot. There is a police report number 797566. Chrysler sent out an inspector, then sent a letter disclaiming any responsibility. Further Chrysler refused to supply a copy of inspectors report. Driver required surgery with implantation of rod and screws. Leg still not totally healed. Hospital bills totalled over $10,000.
The Jeep was reversed up a driveway and placed in park. The driver got out of the vehicle, then about 20 seconds later, the Jeep jumped into reverse and drove across the street and was stopped by a ditch. The hand brake was not activated. I did not report it at the time because I thought it must have been a driver error, but I saw the safety report on cnn (7/4/01) and realized that the incident was due to a defect.
