CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2019 Cherokee is racking up engine complaints for suddenly shutting down while driving. But the problem could possibly be related to the increasingly defective 9-speed transmission which suffers from hard shifts, lurching problems, and a wiring harness defect that can cause sudden shutdowns or an unexpected shift into neutral.

This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The engine and electrical system will completely shut down while in drive and will not restart right away. This happens in the middle of intersections most often when attempting to make a turn. This has happened up to ten times and in the most recent occurrence the car would not restart at all in the middle of an intersection with our baby in the back seat on a hot day. We were stuck with no A/C and no ability to get the car to start until help arrived. The car was towed to a local JEEP dealership and they said it was due to the thermostat and battery which we replace but it has since happened again. In all occurrences, there were no warning signs before, during or after the engine/electrical failure. Additionally, they stated the ar may be overheating but all occurrences have happened in the first few minutes of driving with no indication of the vehicle being over temperature.
While driving at 55mph. The vehicle shutoff and would not restart. Very dangerous to lose power at that speed. Engine light came on and stayed on. Vehicle would not restart. Engine codes read high voltage on PCM modules, brake modules, automatic transmission modules.
Vehicle will shutdown and stall with no warning primarily when coming to a stop. THE CONSUMER STATED THE 2019 JEEP CHEROKEE EQUIPPED WITH A 2.4L ENGINE HAS A KNOWN DEFECT WITH THE POWER TRAIN. THE CONSUMER REFERENCED RECALL UA9/18V-739.
Whenever the oil level gets below 50%, the car stalls when the engine isn-??t warm enough usually 5-10 minutes after turning on. If attempting to turn the car stalls and the engine shuts off and steering wheel locks up. Have happened to me 16 different times. The worst occasion is when I was on the high way going 80 MPH and there was a slight turn. While turning the car stalled and steering wheel locked up. I had to brake and went onto the shoulder and luckily stopped before hitting the guard rail. Took to Jeep dealership multiple times and they just said to get a quart of oil and put it in to avoid this. Apparently only for 2.4L engines. Have had only one option to fix the problem, get an entire new engine on my dime.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, and the mechanic related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V739000 (Power Train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 8,500.
Jeep's engine will unexpectedly stop while driving. Have to pull off the side of the road and then might take a few times to start and then it will continue. Very hazardous when it happens on the busier roads. This has is starting to happen now daily while driving.
Automatic transmission shifts hard at approximately 30 mph causing a sudden lurch. It has happened several times. It is such a sudden movement that it feels unsafe as if someone has hit my car from behind. I will be taking my car to the dealer for the first time for this issue today November 30 2021. It has not been inspected yet by anyone. There were no warnings prior to it happening. First occurrence in early November 2021
About a year ago I took the vehicle in for a recall notice. Software update needed to be run due to the vehicle shutting off during operation. I took the vehicle in for the recall service. Since the recall my vehicle has now started doing the same thing. It seems to happen when slowing to a stop or downshifting. Vehicle totally shuts off, no lights, including break lights, everything shuts off including radio, hazards won't go on, car just totally shuts off. Happened to me at a busy intersection tonight and I nearly got rear ended. Only warning light was the battery when attempting to restart the vehicle. This has happened 4 times in the last two days, this is my only vehicle and I must drive it.
SVC 4WD service light came on - Power Transfer Unit failing. 75000 miles on 2019 Cherokee Latitude Plus. Warranty was only 60000 miles. Should it fail while driving then jeep could not get out of other traffic's way. Dealer inspected it and confirmed PTU failing and needs replacement. my VIN is not on a recall list. I first noticed a few months ago a loss of power when either turning at a light or pulling out at a light. Dash warning light came on traveling at 40 mph near home.
I have the 2019 Jeep Cherokee High Altitude 2.0 turbo 9 speed transmission. We have had this same problem since we bought this vehicle. It doesn't happen all the time but I believe is getting worse. The notorious very very hard shifting & stalling problems. This seems to happen at any speed, at anytime, & doesn't matter how you drive it the problem still persist. You can be driving 35 mph on a straight stretch, no breaking, no change in acceleration, and it will suddenly shift very hard! The other problem that I believe is connected to this is stalling before it decides to shift. Sometimes 3 to 5 seconds before shifting very hard into gear after it finally decides which gear it wants to shift into. It has created some very scary moments that my family & I could have got into an accident multiple times because it took so long to shift. Please be my guest & inspect it! No check lights or anything like that. I did have the battery go bad a year after we bought it. That might have to do with the start/stop system even though it is equipped with a bigger battery and better starter.

The contact stated that no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and repaired however, the failure persisted. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V739000 (Power Train). The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 32,000.
The P2122 OBD-II trouble, or fault, code means that the vehicle's on-board computer has detected low voltage in the throttle position sensor (TPS), which is usually below 0.17 volts. The battery is also at 8.3 volts indicating a potential short somewhere and potentially a faulty alternator. This is not what you want while driving a vehicle.
The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle was shaking. There was an abnormal noise detected from the front and rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the vehicle was working as designed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed the contact that there was an unknown issue with the tires. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified however, no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact stated that his wife was driving and stopped at a red light; when the light turned green, the driver attempted to accelerate and the vehicle began to slowly accelerate at a low speed and the vehicle shuddered and stalled.
