Console suddenly displayed 'service shifter' message while driving 60 mph on highway. It was dry out. Also all shifter lights prnd lights on solid. I'm at approx 70,000 K. afraid to stop in right on empty highway late at night, I dtove to nearest service before shutting off engine. Restarting cleared error. As I was on a long road trip, continued on. This error occurred for second time, approx 2000K later. Restarting again cleared. I have not driven since. Saw online hundreds with same issue and no clear fix or recall. Jeep need to address this asap.
2016 Jeep Cherokee on the highway randomly lose power and would need to pull over restart for the transmission to reengage. This seems to be recall, had the work done in Michigan while on vacation due to the dangers of driving it back home to tn. Dealer did not mention it could be a recall and had me pay full amount.
While driving the vehicle, the check engine light and service transmission came on. It starting acting as though it was stuck in a higher gear. Going from a complete stop and accelerating, there was no power. After getting the code read, it was displaying P0887 "tcm power relay control circuit high." I've researched the issue and noticed that it has happen on a lot of the Chrysler vehicles from 2014 to 2018.
"service shifter" warning message appears and all positions on the shifter console are lighted (P, D, R, etc.). almost always happens at highway speed. Most of the time, but not always, stopping vehicle and turning off and then on again clears the message. Occassionally requires multiple power off/on cycles to restart without the "service shifter" message.
I was driving home and had to come to a full stop due to a traffic light, the engine just shuts down, and there's a message to shift the car to desired gear. The car was on drive but did not respond. I shifted gears from drive to park and got no response from car. It also seemed to indicate the emergency brake was engaged, but it was not. Had to turn off car completely (on a three lane street), and turn it back on again. I got this car 4 months ago, bought it used with 36,000 miles on it and had not had any problems. Now I see this is a recurrent problem on many Cherokee, and I'm so disappointed that fca has not looked into fixing this issue. I will have to take to a dealer.

4 different times and months apart when driving on the freeway, vehicle loses power and the transmission light goes on. Max speed at this point is about 20 miles per hour. Each time I have limped the car off the freeway and shutdown. I waiting a few minutes the car starts back up and drives ok but the check engine light is still on. When I get home or work and the car is parked for an hour or so the check engine light clears and because of this dealership can not code it. Not sure if it is a transmission issue or computer issue. Seems very random but only occurs when traveling at highway speed. With no proof and it being random did not know what to do. Saw a news report for a recall but not my VIN, but the description of the problem was very much the same. Jeep should expand the recall before someone gets injured during one of these incidents.
The check engine light comes on with the message service transmission. Took it to the dealer and they cleared the code then test drove it but was unable to recreate the code. The code and check engine light has come and gone several times since this incident. Every time this happens we are driving the vehicle on the highway and are in 7th or 8th gear.
Jeep will be in drive. I will be driving. It will stop and give warning that vehicle needs to be put in park before it can be put in drive. But shifter has been in drive for a while and I had been driving. It will lose power for now reason. Like it is downshifting but my foot is one the gas peddle. Has happened numerous times both issues.
Service shifter light comes on for the past year. Had in 6 months ago and they told me it just needed a "software update". now 6 months later they say it need a new shifter an wire harness for $500. This should have been done originally since it's the same issue and now not under warranty. Internet has many complaints from this known issue.
Service shifter light came on and gear shift lights are all red, P, R, N, D. this has been ongoing where the lights go off and come back on abruptly. I have pulled over turn the vehicle off and wait a few minutes and the service shifter notification is cleared, and does not come back on for a extended time of 3-4 days then comes back on.
Driving on a busy four lane with heavy truck traffic the engine light goes on and the display states service transmission. You can push the accelerator clear to the floor and the car creeps not more than 25 to 30 miles an hour if it is level, it just drops off! you can't pull a hill. It is like getting run over. Cars and trucks are all over you! accident waiting to happen. We pulled off the road and turn the vehicle off then start it again. It operates again, but the engine light stays on. We were told by the owner of a transmission shop that it seems like a software programming issue. We called Jeep and were told to submit our VIN to see if there is recall. There isn't a current recall for our VIN. This is a serious safety issue!! we looked on line and found an article on a site called carscoops.com that there is a recall for what appears to be the identical problem that we experienced. For 2014-17 Cherokee like ours. Please help. We don't have the finances for a large transmission repair. The vehicle is out of warranty and dangerous, it is a 2016 thanks [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph and making a right turn, the vehicle stalled. The instrument panel displayed a message to place gear shifter in proper gear. The failure recurred three times. The vehicle was taken to northwest Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram (19616 northwest fwy, houston, tx 77065) however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure or retrieve a fault code. The contact was informed that the vehicle needed to be picked up. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage 23,000.
'service shifter' is displayed, meaning I cannot use any of the in vehicle controls or use the manual transmission feature or see what gear I am in. It's an automatic but has the manual option. I've seen hundreds of other people effected by this, needs to be a recall asap or grounds for a class action if no action is taken.
This Jeep has been nothing but problems. When we were in an accident I didn't think that it could be due to the lack of acceleration and poor transmission operation. As the last 2 years have gone since the accident, it is obvious that the accident was a clear result to the powertrain failing. When pressing on the accelerator the vehicle will hesitate or cough before it moves. Once it does the rpms shoot to high. When driving in traffic the car shakes as it stays in gear to long, or doesn't shift to the proper gear at the proper time making the ride very whip lash like. Aside from that the vehicle burns oil so fast I change the oil every 2000 miles. The vehicle currently has 39K miles and I can not wait to get rid of this car. It is unsafe and a true example why I never liked Jeep/Chrysler in the first place. I'll never buy another mopar brand again.
While driving my check engine light came on and I got a "service transmission" message. I went and had it diagnosed at autozone. It came back with error code P0887- tcm power relay control circuit high. The light comes on and goes off but I am noticing a decrease in the acceleration power and at times the vehicle acts as if it is in neutral, I had to put the vehicle in park and then drive and it slowly started driving.
While driving my vehicle tues.5/26/2020, we were approaching a stoplight, when I accelerated transmission act like it was in neutral, so I looked and it wasn't it slowly accelerated and as we continued the dash went dark, when it came back, the engine light was on and had error code stating airbag needed update.I got home and tried checking transmission and noticed, a computer instead of stick so I research problem and found recalls on year and type vehicle.when I called to check and describe my symptoms I was told my vehicle wasnt on recall.I was wondering how exact year, make, and model of vehicle on recall, but even though mine is experiencing the exact symptoms as described in recall!!
While driving an alert on the dash said to service shifter and all the lights by the shifter itself illuminated. I immediately pulled over and restarted the car and the warning went away.
