This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.

On at least 10 occasions from Aug 2017 - Feb 2020, while driving the 2015 Jeep Cherokee, the gear shift would light up and the display would indicate "service shifter." The warning light would disappear once the vehicle was turned off and could not be replicated on command for a mechanic to evaluate.
Service shifter light came on at 86,000 miles, went off after turning my vehicle off. Took to the dealership and they see nothing wrong, no codes, nothing. It jerks a lot when at slow speeds pulling out somewhere and going down a hill.
Service shifter message keeps pop up randomly. It started at around 70,000 miles. Once the car is turned off and back on the message goes away. There seem to be a lot of complaints about this issue with Jeep Cherokee. Is there going to be a recall?
I have a "service shifter" error illuminating on my screen and all the lights illuminate on the shift itself. I turn the car back off and the lights go away, but they always come back on. There are multiple people online reporting the same issue. There are forums everywhere about this. Many people take it to the dealer and get it fixed and it doesn't fit the problem, just creates new ones so they are wasting their money. My issue happens when my car is in park. Not while moving.
When I am driving my car, it will automatically go into neutral. Normally, I am driving 15-25 mps, the radio and heat/ac is off. I am scared to drive my car. When it goes into neutral I press the brake (which is hard) and I put the car on park and after the third or fourth try, it finally turns on. The problem will not occur again during the day. It only happens in the mornings.

The vehicles service shifter comes on while parked and or driving (both highway and city) locking the dash as well as lighting up the gears. Needs replaced, if it's not it'll lock up and prevent the car from being put into park or other gears.
The shifter lights up red in all drive numbers and letters, when driving and sitting still, have to turn off engine then it stops. I dont want problems with this other people have had to change shifters, I should not have to do this, it was an expensive vehicle!!
The 'service shifter' light has come on multiple times in one day. I have turned the car off and back on, but it still shows up as soon as I put my car in drive. This has happened before, but I've always just been able to turn my car off and it would be fine.
Service shifter light keeps coming on. You can turn the vehicle off and on and it will go off. Next time it is started it comes back on again. I am unsure if this is dangerous or not but needs addressed according to forums I have read about this problem.
Service shifter light continues to come on it hapoens while the vehicle is stationary and motion at different times at first it would come on then when I turn the vehicle off and restart it would not be on however for the pass week it comes on more frequently it occurs whether im driving on city streets or highway
At 28,000 miles my Jeep Cherokee had the service shifter light come on periodically and it would just disappear when the car was restarted. No one was able to research the error because it would not remain on and there was no documentation in the manual on how to resolve. At 40,000 miles the error became more frequent and at 42000 miles it became constant. I took it to the dealer today and they said it was a shifter component and they were ordering a bezel to install at a very expensive cost. Every Jeep forum shows that many people are having the same exact issue and I think it should be investigated.
Car went into ' limp' mode. Traction control went off, message, 4-wheel drive is not available. My car lost power and I haft to use manual mode to shift. Dealer stated, that even though I gave them the trouble codes, they could not duplicate problem. Service shifter, light came on but when I restart it goes away
My gas cap light has been on for 2 years. I apparently am the only one with this issue and have been told there is nothing that can be done as they need a flash to reset the motherboard. In the meantime to rule things out I had to have the vapor test done and replace the gas cap which of course solvee nothing.
Car transmission seems to be faulty. When accelerating it would stop rising in RPM and speed and afterwards would kick back and make a noise like something hitting.
Car shifts really hard and then, today when driving in the middle of the road with my toddler in the car my car shut off and said shift to park. Finally turned back on.
Car seems to down shift, shift into nuetral, shift or jump out of gear. Service shifter light keeps coming on.has happened while vehicle was in motion on a city street.
I was driving on the interstate between 60 and 80 pmh and out of nowhere the service shifter popped up on the dashboard screen and then all the lights on the shifter lit up red ( like a christmas tree) and I lose complete function of the shifter all together. This has happened 8 times in the 15 months I have owned this vehicle.
On route 80 vehicle dwnshifted, power steering and brakes affected. Mileage 9604 July 2, 2019. Vehicle towed. August 30, 3019 it happened again but was less than 1 mile away, drove it there picked up vehicle on 9-11-2019. Mileage 9817. Drove it 30 miles and came home. 7 hours later., same issue and was only 2 blocks from my house. Vehicle towed again stating service anti lock brakes service transmission, change oil, service parking brake, 4WD unavailable, check engine light, anti skid light on would not shut off. Steering, transmission and brakes affected. This vehicle is not safe. Same issue in all 3 instances, so they are obviously not correcting the problem. There should at least have recalls on these vehicles. Service records are attached.
Vehicle has a mind of it's own when in gear. When trying back out of places it jerks uncontrollably. Its also does this when waiting idle at a stop sign or light. It will jerk forward as soon as you let off the brake and other times it won't go at all when accelerating. 3 times now it has just completely shut itself off when I'm gear for no apparent reasons at all. I try now not to drive it all because it's not safe. I've kept it up to date on all the computer updates through a certified Jeep dealership including all the oil changes and required maintenance. The dealership says it has to do with the transmission but can offer no true fix through Jeep.
