About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
I recently purchased a used 2015 Jeep Cherokee latitude. When I am at a complete stop and try to take off it stalls to shift into second gear and then it jerks. This is very dangerous when entering into an intersection.
Vehicle loses power while driving. Appears to be shifting to neutral and requires drifting to breakdown lane and restarting. When power is lost instrument panel reads service transmission, service ABS, and service parking brake. Not enough data for a pattern; error has occured during moments of aggressive gear changing (mountains) and using cruise control on the highway.
I just got my vehicle in April 13, 17 my vehicle shut completely off while at the street light and it does this when ever it feels like it and when ever I turn my vehicle on sometimes my inside dashboard or radio lights won't come on and it's still trying to be fixed this is ridiculous
Service transmission came on after I purchased this car 3 days ago with 47K miles. As I slowed to a stop coming off the highway the car vibrated violently repeatedly and then cut off. It took 3 tries to finally turn the vehicle on and it continued to have the same issue. At one point I was having to throw the car in neutral to get it to stop jerking as I decelerated. That created a whole other problem because I then when I shifted back into drive I had no acceleration control. I had to roll off the road, throw it into park, kill the engine, and restart the car to get back control of the accelerator. Very scary and unsafe!
Vehicle rpms rev up to 4000-5000 when going down hills on city streets going 15-20mph. Vehicle randomly accelerates when not hitting gas and vehicle not on cruise control. Vehicle jerks when changing gears. Vehicle also studders when pulling out on city streets. Purchased the vehicle on October 21, 2017 with 34,000 miles. Took vehicle to certified Jeep mechanic on November 6, 2017 with my complaint. They stated the transmission needed to be 'flashed'. I picked the vehicle back up at 4:30pm. After leaving it immediately started doing the same thing. When approaching a stop light on a city street as I began to slow down the vehicle shut completely off in the middle of the road. I took the vehicle straight back to the mechanic and told them what happened. They gave me a rental vehicle as they were closing and didn't have time to investigate the problem. I picked the vehicle back up on November 7, 2017. They stated there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. This vehicle is very unsafe as it randomly accelerates and cuts off randomly while driving. Jeep needs to recall this model before someone gets killed. Every time I drive this vehicle I am worried it's going to cause an accident. I've owned the vehicle for only three short weeks and I've already had it in the shop twice. I haven't even made my first payment.

The vehicle accelerates when I am trying to slow down. This happened top me while driving in my neighborhood and happened to me while driving down the highway. Almost caused me to hit another vehicle. Had this issue before when car was almost brand new, took it to the dealership and they flashed the system. Said it was a recall. Car drove fine for a while but now I am having the same issue again.
The vehicle transmission shift quality is erratic! occupants experience lurching and bucking sensation at low speeds in both forward and reverse motions. This results in a potential safety concern for pedestrians in addition to an unsafe and uncomfortable ride in the vehicle. An unmistakeable consequence is the impairment in value of this vehicle in reference to resale. The dealership has attempted to remedy the stated issue on several occasions with no success. The dealership has also on multiple occasions stated that future software upgrades will alleviate the shift quality issue of this 9-speed automatic transmission but has yet to deliver any such remedy. Please advise!
Driving down the freeway and I suddenly have no power. I could push the throttle pedal to the floor with no response. I had to make it across multiple lanes of traffic going 75mph and pull to the shoulder. I tried restarting and it shuttered and died, twice. Let it sit for a min and then it restarted. It happened 2 days later. This time I was pulling away from a stop sign and I had no throttle response. I slammed the gas pedal to the floor and it shuttered and got power again.
The dealership attempted two software updates and told me they couldn't fix it when I went back the third time for the transmission not shifting properly. I also had a clunking noise in the front end that was fixed with the noise returning shortly after the warranty expiring. The vehicle continues to miss downshifts and does not shift properly when trying to accelerate.
Transmission has failed 3 times in the last 2 months. Once it finally enabled me to put it in drive it would not shift gears right. The highest it would go is 3rd out of 9. it jerks forward on all gear changes. The service transmission warning keeps flashing. Prior to this the auto start /stop feature failed to function. The local Jeep dealer has tried to repair this 3 times for us. We are the 2nd owner. The first owner had the same issues. The original owner had the transmission replaced. We were never told of the lemon "buy back" when we bought the car.
The contact owns a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. While driving 7 mph, the vehicle surged forward independently. In addition, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate on more than one occasion. The contact stated that the vehicle downshifted hard from second to third gear and the rpms increased rapidly. Charlie's Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram in maumee, Ohio was made aware of the failure and provided the following series of repairs: The water pump was replaced, both front axles were replaced, the transmission software was upgraded, the valve body was replaced, and the front passenger side cv joint was replaced, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and provided the contact with case number: 32656386. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Extremely rough shifting for the first 3 or 4 gears. Shuttering between gears if I slow down and speed back up in traffic. If I come to a complete stop and begin to accelerate the first gear is a very hard jerk. Its getting seemingly worse the longer I drive it and its becoming very dangerous to drive in traffic. I purchased the vehicle in February 2017 and had it looked at in March of 2017. Overland park Jeep dealership did a "software update" and sent me on my way. This was no help. I've called multiple times and they say there's no issues or updates available. Took it in again in September 2017 and another "software update" was done. Still no change. Its there now and they are telling me that they've been driving it for 3 days and its "not acting up". so I asked what I should do when I pick it up and its still happening. They said "I guess bring it back". its so unsafe and it seems like they think I have nothing better to do than bring the car in and rent a car.
My Jeep Cherokee has the 9 speed transmission. I went to start the car it took several times to start when it did the car dropped hard into gear and all of the service trans lights came on and it was very difficult to get home as the car was having a very hard time getting into gear and stayed in 2 wheel drive mode. I had the car towed to the dealership and they told me my drive tran warranty covered the cost and I just needed a software update. Four days later I was driving with my husband and 8 month old baby and while stopped at a stop sign the car died and again took several times to restart, all trans lights came on and could not get into gear, we had to drive slowly home with our hazards on and nearly got into an accident when trying to merge into traffic when it kept slipping out of gear.
Re-occuring problems with the transmission. Slow start in first, hangs up in second, rough shift into third. Have actually heard a 'clunk' noice while downshifting. Have gone to the dealer 6 times for diagnostics and updates, but problems persist.
Randomly the vehicle feels as if someone is hitting the car from the front end when put into reverse due to a very hard shift into reverse. Randomly the electrical system will shut off when parked and turning the car on. The auto on/off will randomly shut off while driving and sometimes the vehicle will not start for some unknown reason. I hesitated reporting this thinking that it was probably just bad luck but because of a conversation with a co-worker who is having the exact same problems I thought that it may be a symptom of a larger problem and something I should report. If this were to happen when driving at higher speeds it could be a disaster.
At 47,351 miles the cylinder head on cylinder # 4 failed causing the engine to stall and run rough. Jeep dealer is replacing it under a factory warranty
My Jeep's transmission in gears 1 and 2 will sporadically have issues with hesitations, stalling, jerking the car forward, and loud clunk sounds during shifting. I will be at a stop sign stopped, push the gas to go and it will hesitate for 1 second, then jolt forward when it decides to move. One instance I was driving on a city street and wanted to go faster, I pressed on the gas and it all of sudden seemed to have stalled out. Gas was not doing anything for a good 5 seconds. I was in the process of trying to get out of traffic as my speed was declining and then it kicked in and went. As of recent, it has started to make a loud clunk sound and slight jerk when moving from low gears while in motion. Again this is all sporadic. It does not happen all the time. I brought it into two different dealerships about the issue. They flashed the electronic component both times. Flashing seemed to help for a few weeks, then it slowly went back to the sporadic behavior. Note: This has been over 3 years, not once specific instance.
My 2015 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk transmission shudders, clunks and hesitates. Some of the hesitations have lasted 4 seconds which is dangerous when you're in traffic and push the gas and get no response. The hesitation happens when you're slowing down for a turn and then push the gas. This appears to be in the third to second gears. The computer has been flashed several times. The dealer also did something to the torque converter. Then the Chrysler rep had the dealer reset the computer back to factory settings and said it was working according to design. It isn't fixed. It still clunks, shudders and hesitates but only for 2 seconds now. The problems started in the first 10,000 miles. I'll include 4 of the service records. I think there were 10 or more visits.
Transmission is inconsistent in gears 1-3. sometimes hesitates to move in first gear. All recalls have done nothing to address issues. Jeep dealership has no idea how to fix the problem and advises it's all software issues that they can't fix.
