Was driving my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe when out of no where it started knocking loudly, took it to a mechanic and they said I needed a new motor it had 146K on it. Replaced the motor with a brand new motor with only 7 miles on it 2 weeks later the same thing happened, knocking noise and motor seizing up. It's my understanding that the Hyundai manufacturer should replace the 2014 sante fe like they did the sonota's and sante fe sports cause this vehicle has the same problems!
Engine has around 89K miles. Began with a knocking noise and after taking it to the dealership we were advised it "needed a new engine." Dealer was not specific as to what exactly the issue was, but I believe the same issue that affected the Hyundai sonata and Santa Fe sport is also affecting this vehicle. Because we are the second owners, Hyundai has refused to provide us any assistance. After picking it up from the Hyundai dealership, we attempted to drive to another company's dealership to initiate a trade in. While driving on the interstate, the vehicle degraded in power and died on the busy roadway just off the interstate off ramp. My wife had to push the Santa Fe using my car to get it off the roadway to a gas station parking lot. The engine does now turn on, but anytime it is put in gear it dies. Engine is completely useless. We always perform routine regular maintenance on our cars and this vehicle has not been abused in any way. Was purchased in 2016 with roughly 45K miles on it.
I'm in the last 2 weeks, as I was driving, 3 different times, it felt and sounded like the SUV was going to die out. Last week, when I came to a stop, the SUV started shaking for less than 5 seconds.

The engine started making a knocking noise on start up but would quickly quiet. After a week the noise increased to knocking on start up and until I shifted through gears 1-3. after a few days, while driving 50 mph on a rural but high speed road the power to the gas pedal stopped working and my speed decreased without my control. After pulling over I was only able to accelerate slowly, 5-10 mph. I pulled into a gas station and the battery light flickered twice then disappeared. I turned the vehicle off and back on and the power to the gas pedal was functioning as normal. The knocking sound was much worse after this incident. I took the vehicle to the dealer and have been quoted for a full engine replacement. Regular oil changes have been completed during my ownership of the vehicle. The dealership indicated no oil leak but declared a low level of oil remaining.
It has been determined that the engine is no longer functional at only 106K miles after my car has been given very regular and routine oil changes. The oil coated the bearings and it burned up the internal workings of the engine according to the mechanic, resulting in engine seizures. The vehicle was in motion, however it had been slowly deteriorating prior to complete seizure.
Engine failure (upper/lower) under moderate acceleration due to uncharacteristic rapid oil consumption with no warning of low oil level or pressure. 165,000 miles on vehicle. Maintained with engine oil changed routinely every 5,000 miles; normal operating conditions (not severe).
The car is a 2014 Santa Fe and out of the blue I started to hear a strange noise from my engine area. Multiple dealerships confirmed that it was the engine that needed to be replaced. One dealership assured me that it would be covered due to a recent recall on Santa Fe engines but come to find out the recall was for a different engine type and not mine. While researching online I have seen several complaints of engine failure for the same type of engine that my Santa Fe has. The car isn't safe to drive at all and when I contacted Hyundai about offering some sort of assistance and to cover the costs of the engine, they refused to do so. There should be a recall and the 3.3 engines as well. I have had several cars before and never have I ever had an engine fail me.
My 2014 Santa Fe went into "limp mode" and wouldn't travel more than 5 miles an hour. I was told that my engine had no oil and was part of a safety recall. After months of jumping through the hoops with a series of oil consumption tests, I was told that if I replaced a slightly drippy oil pan gasket (a leak so small that it never hit my concrete carport) that Hyundai of cumming would send our paperwork to Hyundai corporate for a recall of the engine. I never knew that the car completely-shutting-down while driving was a possibility. Apparently, the recalled engines do exactly that! they shut down while being driven with no warning! while driving, my Santa Fe completely shut-down. No power steering, no power brakes, nothing! no warning lights ever came on to alert me of a problem. The timing of this happening was convenient though as I was going away for 5 days. I dropped my car at the cumming ga dealership. I asked them to replace the oil pan seal and trouble shoot the stalling problem. 5 days they sat on my car. They did nothing. Turns out, they were waiting on the service-rep who did my repair estimate to return from vacation. They were going to wait 11 days without doing the work or talking to me. They said that they didn't do the work because my car did not qualify for the recall. Recall or no recall, I need my car fixed! after showing up in person, I was given a loaner car until they could diagnosis the engine & replace oil pan gasket. This was tues 9/15. They gave me the loaner car until fri. Called on fri, they hadn't found the stalling problem and said keep the loaner until 9/25. Was told today that they still have not replaced the oil pan gasket, but they want the loaner back. This is outrageous. I don't feel safe in this car. And despite being a paying customer, they still haven't done the work they said I need to have done for the recall.
Vehicle blew a head gasket. Mechanic said rear bank head bolts were not torqued to spec. Was of the opinion it came off the assembly line that way. I never had it max to red level on overheating and was shocked that the engine was damaged. The vehicle began to sporadic temp spikes then back down before I could even pull off. This happened on residential streets, on the interstate, anywhere really. This happened one day, then would be fine for a week, then started it again. I was on my way home from church and the engine temp started acting sporadically. I would pull off and it would cool within a second or 2. I tried to make it home, but the engine temp gauge stopped cooling back down to quickly. I called aaa and had it towed to a mechanic. Blown head gasket. Almost $5,000 to fix. I have taken prestine care of this auto. My 2nd Hyundai vehicle but now I'm looking at other brands. A little gun shy of Hyundai now.
Vehicle began making a noise out of nowhere, no light indications, nothing. Suddenly the engine died on the interstate, again, no light indications until the vehicle actually stopped running. Vehicle was towed to local shop, found out it had absolutely no oil in it, but there was no oil leak. Engine had broken and told we needed a new engine. Hyundai then told us that they no longer make the 2014 engine, so a replacement would cost $11,000 and have 96,000 miles on it. Our Santa Fe had 73,000 miles on it when this occurred. Sudden engine failure with no indication of an issue, while traveling at a high rate of speed on the interstate could have produce a horrible, if not fatal accident.
Check engine light illuminated while traveling down the interstate, lost power to the gas pedal taking speed down to 30 mph. Managed to make it off of an exit and to the closest mechanic. The mechanic found metal fragments in the oil filter leading him to believe that there is a faulty engine. Called Hyundai of asheville and was told to bring it in. They diagnosed it as the cams locking up, meaning I need a new engine.
While driving the vehicle at highway speed approx. 60mph engine began to make a knocking sound in the engine bay. Had the vehicle towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer and began filing a complaint to Hyundai usa. After 2 weeks of the vehicle sitting there and no word back I called the dealer to find out if it had been diagnosed. No one had looked at it! next day we got a call stating motor was blown up and a cost to repair would be $15,720!!!!! this vehicle was and has been very well maintained with regular oil changes etc. ( verified by dealer oil level was good ) oil light was not on nor did any warning lights illuminate during any of this. This is our second Hyundai that we have owned with an engine failure ( last vehicle had been recalled for engine. ) and this will be our last Hyundai.
Engine started knocking. Took in to dealership. Low 4 quarts of oil. No check engine lights came on. No oil light came on. No change oil soon light came on. Which caused metal shavings in oil filter when looked at by a mechanic. Vehicle was being driven on city street that the noises started. Bought car 5000 miles ago.
I was not notified of my car's entire engine recall, by mail, email, phone..nothing. I was on the busiest freeway (driving the speed limit...75mph) in the state, and my car's engine failed!! I was scared to death. I could have been killed. It was the most horrible auto experience in my life. I am now scared to drive and can't drive on freeways. The whole ordeal, towing, eventual motor replacement, having to drive back up to exchange rental cars, loaner vehicles, etc., has caused me some ptsd. I was told by the dealer in the town close to where the car motor failed, Hyundai did not send out any recall notices.they did not want to be inundated with owners. Yes, the Hyundai dealership many miles from my home eventually replaced the motor. However, Hyundai did not make it easy for me. Ie., at first, no loaner car available (I had to get a rental car.) I have yet to be reimbursed for my towing and rental car expenses. When I flashback to this, I get upset. I can't afford to sell my car, but do not want to keep it either. Look into this. As I said, I could have been killed or seriously injured. Save others from dying or injury please.
The Santa Fe's engine seized while traveling on an interstate highway going ~65 mph. After the car was stopped on the side of the highway, oil leaking from the engine was visible on the ground. The Santa Fe's engine would not turn over/start. After towing and letting the car sit overnight at an auto shop, the cold engine would still not turn over/start when the mechanic tried. The trusted mechanic said the engine had seized and was useless. A recall was issued for Hyundai's Santa Fe sport and sonata of the same year, 2013-2014 models. The recall is for machining errors during engine manufacturing. These errors can cause premature wear of the bearings leading to engine seizures. Have other people experienced this defect in the 2014 Santa Fe?
The contact owns a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 17V226000 (engine and engine cooling) at atlantic Hyundai located at 193 sunrise hwy North service rd, West islip, NY 11795, (631) 587-0700. The contact stated that 6,000 miles after the repair was completed, while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal fuel odor in the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle towed to independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the high-pressure fuel line needed to be replaced. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of failure. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 18V934000 (engine, fuel system, gasoline) however the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 39,000.
Rod bearing went out in the engine at 81,123 miles. The vehicles was in motion and went into slow power mode. However, my feeling is the damage to the motor was already done before there were any signs of trouble.
