This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Passenger side slider periodically sticks, sometimes difficult to open, sometimes impossible. Worse in cold weather. Sometimes will un-latch partially, causing door ajar light to come on. Dealer has fixed this problem several times by lubricating the seals, giving a temporary fix. In freezing weather neither slider will open. At one point both doors developed dents from the inside out, that the dealer repaired as a warrenty service. Now service department has told me that lubricating the seals will have to be a regular service, which I find unacceptable as this is a safety issue for passengers riding in the car who could be trapped inside. We also had a problem with the power door locks that the dealer fixed under warranty. (car is LX model, manual sliding doors)
There was a creaking noise coming from the passenger left side sliding door when a turn was made, the sliding door failed on 2 occasions, which caused the passengers to have to enter through the driver left side sliding door.
Passenger side rear power sliding door will not close all the way. Door slides fully shut, but then reverses about 1/2inch and is visibly not latched/closed. Also at times when door does visually close all the way, while driving the audible warning noise for an open door comes on but the dashboard indicator does not show which door. Depress the 'close' button on the right side power door will silence the alarm while driving, yet the problem recurs....it's tough to drive with that [xxx] noise blaring and you also wonder if the door is really shut and safely locked? I'm taking the vehicle to the dealer on 5/30/02, but based on the complaints shown on NHTSA website for similar problems, I am uncertain whether it is even possible to satisfactorily and completely fix in one visit. I'm 12 miles from passing the warranty period on the vehicle...called the dealer when I was 450 miles away but couldn't get appt. Until 6 days later...I cannot park the vehicle just to make sure I don't go over 36,000 miles.... I'm also wondering if they do fix, will future fixes if same occurs or if not fixed satisfactorily will be covered as the problem has started while under warranty. The dealer I am going to, hinshaws Honda has been in my experience in the past given 100% to all repairs, and I'm looking forward to getting the same honest and satisfactory service on this problem as I've had in the past. (or I'll be emailing the NHTSA again) I am doing this, to add my problem so if a recall is warranted, my problem can be counted. The left hand sliding door opened on its own while the car was moving, it also jams and doesnot close completely, consumer stated that this problem is dangerous and substantially impairs the safety, consumer stated the vehicle has been into dealer on 8 different occasions for the sliding door problem
Left side sliding door keeps sticking closed will not open until car is repeatedly turned off and on. This has happened repeatedly since the van was new! seems to be electrical rather than "door seal sticking" as Honda claims. Each time they just grease the door seal. Now the left outside handle has broken when trying to open door. And now the right side sliding door is starting to stick also. Have complained about this every time we take it in for service/repair. Honda just shrugs it off and says they will fix the broken handles free while its under warranty. The dealship has never once let on to me they are having problems with other vans until I said I found out from the NHTSA website. Does my family have to be trapped in the vehicle and die before Honda does something about this?

We were told the automatic doors have sensors similar to those of garage door openers-they do not and it takes a tremendous amount of adult force to open the door when it closes on a perosn or body part. Achild could easily be crushed by this mechanism.
The rear sliding passenger doors stick and are impossible to open without a great deal of effort from both the inside and outside of the vehicle. We bought this van because of it's high safety rating and it's used to Transport our seven year old daughter. In the event of an accident, if it was necessary to exit from either of the rear doors it would be impossible to do so. I have tallked to several other Odyssey owners and they all seem to have th same complaint about the doors. We have complained to bluff city Honda about this problem and they seem to have made an effort but the problem persists. This may sound like a minor inconvenience but I believe it to be a serious safety concern.
Sliding door on both driver/S and passenger's sides is very dangerous. Took to dealer, and they replaced both handles. Currently, door has to be lubed every 3 months. A four year old was able to break handle. Consumer felt there was defect in sliding door.
Both electric sliding doors would not close electronically. When electronic door is diabled, and doors cllosed manually --- the doors open while vehicle is in motion. Also door closes on it's own without intervention making it very dangerous for kids. Also doors safety system (not closing and crushing someone when in the path of closing electronic door) does not work.
Left power sliding door acts like it is locked even though all other doors not locked. Right power door will not latch completely. This was second time for this door, and has happened on left door previously.
Door lock system automatically engaged with infant in car in summer heat. Fire and rescue were called in an attempt to get into vehicle, but eventually had to break window to gain access and remove child. Minivan has been in shop several times for sliding doors not shutting and or locks not engaging, or doors opening while vehicle is moving on road. Honda refuses to accept responsibility, but has admitted to us in the past that they are having problems with the doors on this vehicle.
Electronic door can still be opened by continuously jiggling of door, even when gas cap door is open. Continuing jiggles can bypass safety feature that door should have at all times. In owner manual on page 97 it states this informaiton. Consumer states under no circumstances should safety feature be bypassed.
Automatic sliding door does not latch properly. This has happened to both sliding doors but more prevelant on the right one. On several instances when the vehicle is moving, the (right) door has swung open jeopardising safety of infants and other passengers in the van. The vehicle has been taken into the Honda dealership for repairs of this item several times (at least four). Problem has not been resolved.
