CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2008 Honda Accord has several serious defects: poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

Honda took our money and now refuses to acknowledge they have a problem with excessive oil consumption...2 qrts in 3k miles...Like every other dealer I've read on this site they tell us this is acceptable!! BULLSHIT! We started conplaining at 31k miles and after our 3rd "Consumption Test" we are at 37k miles...and they stand behind "It's an Acceptable consumption level"

Our family has owned many Hondas and all combined over the years have not used this much oil...NEVER AGAIN WILL WE BUY A HONDA PRODUCT AFTER THIS SCREW JOB!!!! We are forced to trade out of this LEMON... I suggest you all do the same!

Oil life indicator said 15% left. Then the red oil pressure light came on intermittently. Went to an oil change franchise and was told it had less than a quart of oil in it. No sign of leakage. Up until now no excessive oil use. Very disturbing to see this is a common problem with no apparent answer.

Update from Sep 20, 2011: I was speaking today with a woman who has worked as a "service adviser" at the local Honda dealer for several years.. She said that the dealership recently received word of a recall for this problem and the solution is a reprogramming of the onboard computer. Also said the recalls are not all mailed out at one time so the dealership won't be flooded with calls. So, we'll see.

I change the oil religiously every 5000 miles with Pennzoil Platium synthetic 5-20w. Every oil change since 25,000 miles has required an additional quart ~2500 miles. This VERY UNACCEPTABLE especially for a Honda. I took the 2008 Accord to the dealer and inquired about this issue. I was told that this type of oil usage was considered normal by Honda!! My 1994 Accord(190,000 miles) and 2004 Pilot(130,000 miles) NEVER require an additioinal quart of oil!!!

Noticed that I had a intermittent oil light coming on and that I was hearing an excessive vibration from under the car when accelerating from first and second gear. Brought the car into the dealer for an early oil change to get it checked out. I was told that both problems were due to having just one quart of oil left in the pan (which shocked me). I was also told that burning oil was 'normal'.

I have had Hondas since 1984 and have always changed oil regularly and have never had an oil burner. I was told to bring in the car after 1,000 miles for them to check. Came home and found this site and was again shocked to find out others were having the same problem. I will update my experience after the next 1k miles.

Update from Oct 18, 2010: Used one full quart after 1500 miles. Also had someone check the exhaust when I started up cold. Noticed that when I reved the engine, it was hesitating intermittently as well. I checked the 07-057 Honda service bulletin about a control module software update for low power acceleration and found it did not apply to my vehicle. I will see what Honda says about that at my next oil change. I'll keep the site posted when I find out more.

I am also having the same oil consumption problems that everyone is mentioning here. I have my oil changed when the maintenance minder reaches 15% (approximately 9,500 miles each time). A friend of mine has a local garage where I have my oil changed because I am not close to a dealership. The last two times I have had my oil changed I have been at least two quarts low and have added oil in between changes. My friend stated that this type of oil consumption is definitely not normal and I should contact the dealer.

I called the dealership and told the service technician that my car was using oil. I have driven about 3,000 miles since my last oil change and my car had used two quarts of oil. I asked if the shop where I was having my oil changed was filling it all the way up. Really?!?! I'm pretty sure they know how to change oil since they have been in business for 30 years!

He then stated I needed to come in for an oil consumption test. I asked him how this was performed. He explained the process to which I replied...It just used two quarts in 3,000 miles...there's your test results. He stated that was not normal but I would still have to bring it in for testing. Since I now have 60K miles on my car it is out of warranty.

My husband drives a 1995 Honda Passport with 200K miles that doesn't use a drop of oil. He never has problems out of this vehicle. That is the main reason I bought a Honda. I am really regretting that decision now!

If your Honda dealer tells you that 1 qt of oil is normal in 1000 miles of driving, join the club of Honda losers, LIKE ME. I was the sucker who bought one, brand new. This after owning 2 preludes, 5 accords over a period of 25 years have I ever owned a oil burner like my 08 Honda Accord EX 4cyl. The official word from Honda corporate after 4 oil changes (3 at my expense) was that this oil consumption is perfectly normal.

Well I had a plan for my non sympathetic dealer and Honda Corporate and you should too if they give you the same bull.

This is very easy and an excellent solution, so listen up. If it in fact your "new" Accord burned 1 qt every 1000 miles and a recommended oil change is every 5,000 - 7,000 miles, just don't do a thing. That engine will get pretty noisy after 4-5k miles. This is just the time to try driving everywhere in first gear, especially on the highway!

My warranty says 3yrs or 36,000 mi. Wow, what a huge bang and surprisingly, hardly any oil on the ground. New short block motor under "warranty" and your problems are solved. Don't take it like a fool and just put up with it. Get even! Don't forget, if you play their game, after 36,000 miles, you own all the problems. And the first one will be a catalytic converter at around 1200 bucks out of your pocket. (maybe two converters) Next will be that bummer engine just after 60,000 miles and that one will really cost "you".

Don't take it, get even.

My Honda is burning oil somehow. At an oil change the guy told me it was very low for a new car and to take it to the dealer. So I did and they have not been able to find anything wrong with it but I know it is much lower then when I changed the oil. I do not have any oil marks on the pavement so I am not sure what is going on. Anybody else have this problem?

Honda has a problem. After reading all the complaints about the oil problem I know there are alot of people out there with the same problem. My car just used 3qts in 2,000 miles. This is my 3rd honda and I am sick. There telling me I will have to put a quart in every 1,000 miles and that is normal..Bull!!!!.

Has anyone got honda to address this problem.. I'm on my 2nd oil test. 7 trips to the dealer at my expense...with two oil changes at my expense @ 44.50 per. rediculous!!!!!!!

Purchased 2008 Honda acccord EXV6. Drove perfectly for 39,000 miles. Suddenly check engine light came on. Dealer says oil was too low and added 3 quarts of oil. Now he wants me to "track" oil levels with each gas fuel and come back in 1000 miles for a recheck. Good part is i have done "all" services with the same dealer. So he cannot complain of shoddy maintenance :).

Well like everyone else on here I heard the same crap from Honda. My car burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles. It made me sick beyond belief when the "manager" at honda said this was perfectly normal. He also suggested i check the oil level when I gas up???? I owned a 92 honda prelude (vtech engine as well) that NEVER burned oil. All the way to 185K. Its a serious problem that honda is blowing off on the consumer, and something needs to be done. Oh, brakes? Dont get me started with that im already on my 3rd set!!!!

Had Honda Accord 2.4l before it was a great car so we decided to replace it with new model 2008.What a mistake!!! Problems started from the beginning: Remote keys didnt work, headlights dim every few minutes or so,brakes replaced already twice /dealer gave us free pads we paid labour/inside lights stop working for no reason, lost all clearance lights/fuse/ Enough? No? 8 days ago i noticed strange rattling noise from engine checked oil-barely minimum took it for oil change 2 days later and was advised by mr Aaron from Ideal Honda that only 0.5 l oil came out from engine, noise is gone after oil change but engine most likely is to be replaced and warranty will not cover it !!!!!!

I say this is a scare tactic from honda dealer becouse they already know those engines have a problem as wel as v6 -i think it has something to do with switching off 2 in 2.4l and 3 in v6 cylinders design Once again HONDA IS GOING DOWN DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT THIS CAR!!!!

Update from Jun 28, 2010: According to Honda burnig as much as 1 l. of oil ber 1000mi is normal-to me it doest sound right and what about pollution?

Crap! I purchased a 2008 Honda Accord new. That new car reliable feeling soon left me. This car uses at least 2 quarts of oil between changes. The dealer says that's normal. I said what?! All the injectors were replaced at 34,000 miles.Again at 46,000 they told me 2 more injectors went out. They did a system clean out for 500 dollars. It ran like new again for a while. But since I've had to put injector cleaner 3 or 4 times which works for a while , but here I am again my car in the driveway with the same problem. Engine light on and running rough.Crap! Do we need a class-action suit to get help? the Honda co. is not shooting us straight. I should have kept my 2002 Malibu. I want my money back!

Accord EX-L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 42,000 miles

I had been a happy owner of a 2008 Honda Accord EX-L since May '08. All the great things I had heard about Honda Accord made me make the switch from a SUV. Since I do drive alot I even purchased an extended warranty. Let me say that the honeymoon didn't last very long, and now I have a car with a Check Engine Light and 2 other warning lights that have not shut off in months, and a car dealer that says Honda won't let them fix the issue.

Since I have owned the car I would get the Check Engine Light coming on every few months. When I would bring the car into the dealer they would always tell me that I have no oil in my engine. Which I could not understand since I have have my oil changed every 3,000 miles. My oil light has never come on, and what is the oil life % indicator for then? This problem had gone on for a year and a half without the dealer doing anything beyond putting oil in and sending me on my way. Finally in March the dealer took the time and discovered that the valve seals were leaking oil and they said that they needed to replace those and some other items in the engine. It would all be covered under the warranty and they just needed to order the parts. I was so happy that they finally found the problem and it would all be fixed and I could go on enjoying the Honda Accord that I had purchased.

After my car sitting at the dealer for 5 days waiting for the parts to arrive I contacted the service rep at the dealer to ask when I could pick up my car. I was then told that there was an update on the repair. The update was the Honda told them not to replace the valve seals as this would not correct the problem. I was just shocked that I had a warranty and an extended warrranty and Honda would not do a thing to at least try and correct this. I am now stuck with a car that drives like crap, with the Check Engine Light and VSA lights on all the time; and I am stuck being at the mercy of Honda that will tell me when they are going to fix the issue. Is driving my car doing further damage? Is it safe? The temporary solution they told me was to check my oil every time I fill up my gas tank! I asked if I need to save my receipts for this and get reimbursed, you can guess what they response was.

It is somewhat nice to see all these other posts here with people with similar issues. My question is, when are they going to admit there are major problems with this model and do the correct thing and make the repair and stop telling the drivers that it must be their fault? I won't even go into the brake repairs that I had at 20K miles on the front and back that I paid full price to have replaced!

I can go on, but my anger is getting up there.

How can we as consumers be treated correctly? All I want is the car that I purchased to live up to what I paid for it and what I was told about it.

After having the transmission replaced at 48880 kilometers, they also did an oil change, at 57062 kilometers the oil light comes on and the dipstick shows nothing, with the car still at 40% oil life. The dealer now has me doing an oil consumption test. I will know more when the consumption test is completed. According to the paper Honda considers 1500 kilometers or more per liter of oil to be an acceptable figure within the new car limited warranty.

Like other members of this forum, I have found that my accord consumes oil at a ridiculous rate. I had changed the oil in December 09 31650 miles and had the car in for another problem (cold start stuttering). They found that the car was two quarts low on oil and the brain surgeon (service rep) who called me said that whoever changed the oil last time did not put enough oil in the car. I went down to the dealer to talk about the oil and stuttering (another complaint) and a senior service rep told me that Honda has an acceptable standard that of losing as much as 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. I told him this was ridiculous and he just looked at me and said it is the high performance V tec engine that causes this. No way should a newer car use that much oil in little over 8000 miles. My 2002 accord V6 never lost a drop of oil.

I am adding to what is becoming a long list of oil consuming Accords. My Accord is only 2 years old with 33000 and change. While driving home on the freeway the VSA and check engine light come on and stay on. Following Hondas manual I stop and restart the car, lights go of only to come back on again, this goes on for a day. Call the dealership they say when it stays on all the time we'll get you in. The next day lights come on and stay on. Dealership called, appointment made, car taken in. They call back and tell me the car has two oil fouled plugs and is consuming oil... down one and a quarter quarts with 60% on oil change. Then they tell me that if they fix the problem it will come back and that Honda is researching the issue and they tell me to check the oil after every fill-up. Can you say pain in the ass!!!!! I call Honda and they tell me 1 quart per 1000 miles falls within their acceptable parameters. Can we say BULL.... I have three other vehicles 2 diesels and a gas with twice as many miles and they collectively don't burn 1 quart between changes. I have never owned a vehicle that consumes that much oil and why is it my neighbors 07 with 60k doesn't consume any oil. Honda is snowing us with hopes we will go away.....not gonna happen. And this WILL be the last Honda I every own.......
