CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2008 Honda Accord has several serious defects: poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

Has anyone figured out a solution for excessive oil consumption? I have had my 2008 honda accord (4 cylinder) for 2 months now. I had to take my car in because it was making an accelerating "airy" noise (only when the car warmed up) when I was accelerating and a few hours later the oil pressure light blinked on and off. and after reading everything on this site sounds like it's a common problem. I was told that my oil was very dirty and that they changed the oil twice. oh and that I was OUT of oil!! My husband and I came back from a 2000km trip recently so given, I was due for an oil change (even though my oil change indicator said 60% life remaining)

now if I do my math correctly - from what they have stated - I should be TOTALLY out of oil at about 7500km (using 1 litre / 1500km) I myself have never driven a vehicle that is totally out of oil at 7500 km - dirty and needing to be changed yes, bone dry NO!!!

now I have heard suggestions to change the plugs, oil pump, check valve seals and piston rings but has anyone actually done this and solved the problem??

I am no mechanic but I have worked on vehicles before and I am furious to this discovery!! besides everything I really like the accord but now, like everyone else, am reconsidering... I shouldn't need a second job to keep up on refilling my oil!!!

please help me with some solutions!! p.s. The service counter said that honda has told them to say that this is the specified oil consumption and meets their guidelines, and that she knew of one other accord owner in my area that had this problem... hmmm odd, honda corporate must know that they have this problem you think?

Called 3 Honda dealerships and they say it is normal to consume 1 quart of oil every 1000 is ok. Even called the main company and they said its in the specs. Why would you want a vehicle that burns oil how can you travel anywhere, what are you suppose to bring bunch of oil to drive anywhere????????????

have a 2003 Honda pilot, love it. Decided on a new 2008 V-6 Accord. Loved it until:

rear brakes replaced twice before 45K, Granted they helped pay after the class action suit.

Replaced 100k plus at 44k, warranty.

But, the kicker was the oil consumption. It was going thru so much oil, they were saying it was ok, under their guidelines etc. Had me coming back for 1k checks, and more oil. I have always kept my cars past 200k, not this one.

Asked their used car dept. for a bid and they bought the car. Could not in my mind try selling myself telling the new purchased everything ok. A car does not burn a quart every 1k. Doubt if I ever buy a Honda again.

Wow, so sad after reading the exact issues I am having with my 4 cylinder 2008 Accord Coupe. Uses oil so quickly, I now check oil weekly and usually have to top off after checking. No oil leaks!! Husband is a mechanic and is furious that I insisted on purchasing a Honda. I owned two previously and I never had any issues (AT ALL!) So now we are responsible for low oil issues because these cars aren't accelerating and not able to stop properly. I may just have to go back to driving American Made Cars to get the quality that Honda used to provide.

Same story as everyone else here! On the oil change before last my husband (who changes the oil in all our cars and always has) went ahead and changed the oil even though it wasn't time due to the fact that he added 2 quarts of oil and it still wasn't registering on the dip stick. Didn't think much of it at the time until he had to add another 2 quarts long before the next oil change was due. Made an appointment with a local Honda dealer for the usual oil consumption test. I know for a fact they had to add at least 1 quart. The service manager gave a little smile when I said my husband does the maintenance, I imagine that'll be his excuse for my oil issues!! So we'll see!

Recently purchased a Certified preowned 2008 Accord, with 29000 miles, day after purchase, checked all fluid levels, Oil & trans fluids were half a quart low, topped them off. January 7th, car was running bad and Oil (idiot) light came on, so we took to Honda dealership, car was 4.4 quarts low on oil? Has no leaks, were is the oil going? Dealership says normal consumption? Go figure, How many people actually check there oil between changes? 1 out of a 100? We are performing a oil consumption test, first test at 1443 miles, engine was 1.5 quarts low. Reply later on second test results.

We all have to file a class action lawsuit against Honda for this problem, obviously they do not want a recall, that would cost them a fortune, but for us the buyers, this problem is not normal, way beyond, and Honda will stand by there product or we'll go the the NEWS, they will love to air our stories. Also if Honda does not repair problem, I'll be contacting the BBB.

Honda has a major problem with the 2008 car. Honda has no knowledge of this oil loss problem , they believe everything is just wonderful. Just keep adding oil.If it blows up, it must have been the drivers fault. Sounds like the Honda is taking the same stance with their oil consumption problem that Toyota took with their braking problem. Oil consumption, we don't have no stinking oil consumption problem.

Update from Feb 13, 2011: My Honda was 46500 on it. Has been using a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Honda continues to state this is normal consumption for Honda cars.Three days ago the engine warning light came on and the car was missing running on maybe 4/5 cylinders. Take the car to the Dealer from which it was purchased. Service writer cannot believe I must put a quart of oil in every 1000 miles. States she has never heard of this. She than asks whats wrong with the car,I tell her either the plugs are fouled or the injectors are fouled. She cannot believe this. I tell her to write on the service order fouled plugs or fouled injectors do to excessive oil comsumption. I was right .Get call from dealer, 4 of the six plugs are fouled .I must replace all six plugs at cost of $380.00 . Stated they will up date computer which should remedy my problems. We will see.

Update from Feb 26, 2011: Feb.11,2011. Honda Dealer calls me to let me know AHM to pay 99% of repair to replace all 6 S/PLG and reprogram ECM/PCM. (GOODWILL ON PART OF AHM). Four of the six plugs were fouled with excessive oil. Feb 23, 20011 my problem with 2008 Honda Accord EX-L V6 is over, got rid of the car!!!!!

Oil light came on - checked level, completely empty. Originally thought the dealership neglected to fill the oil chamber at the last oil change. Asked for an oil change and for the mechanic to check the engine to ensure there was not damage. Viewing the work order later on showed that the engine was not checked.

One month later, everytime I turned over the engine, there would be a loud 'clunk'. This was consistent with cold engine starts. The oil light came on again - checked level, completely empty AGAIN. Took it to the dealership where they had it for a couple of days to replicate the 'clunking' sound. The entire engine had to be rebuilt - the rings had seized and the oil was dumping into the engine. The rings were replaced and the cylinders had to be re-honed. Additionally, the v-tech solenoid was replaced. So, both the engine short and long block were crap. Took weeks to get the car fixed.

When I finally got my car back, the shifter cable assembly broke and I lost 2nd, 4th and reverse gears. That was the last straw. I fought a long 4-month battle and won. The dealership bought back my car and I am driving a 2011 Pilot. If it were just Honda Canada I was dealing with, I would still be in my crap Accord because they were not admitting their was an issue and hiding behind the warranty. But the dealership stepped up and took care of their customer.

I have had the oil changed every 5000 miles at Honda. Noticed the car ran smoother after an oil change, started asking if the oil level was ok before they changed it. "no problem!" well, the valvs started to rattle and the oil light went on. They said to come in for an oil consumption test. Did a few, it burns a quart of oil every thousand miles. They were super concerned the first test, said thats bad and would fix it if it was a half quart low at 1000 miles. At 1000 miles, they said "sorry, if it burns a quart or less per 1000 miles, its within factory specs. They seemed nervous. wont do a thing to fix it. If I wait the recommended 6000 miles to change the oil, it will burn the engine up! this is INSANE. They must be worried about a major recall. Horrible service, and service is why I bought the Honda! Im fighting this, getting the govt involved. Horrible.

I know cars. Ok my wife's 2008 Accord has vanishing oil issues also. Bought it used (certified) with 22k my wife drives 40k per year. I use Mobil 1 changed every 10k. Well sort of. I'm having to add roughly 2.5 quarts between changes. Do you realize the damage caused when the oil light is on . Typically set at 3-4psi. Not enough to lubricate. Especially valve train. Also the lower the level the faster the consumption. It snowballs. What is happening to the catalytic converter (guaranteed issue later-and they aren't cheap!) and 0 2 sensors. It appears it has affected mpg by about 5mpg. I'm gonna do my own testing this week- cyl leakage, compression, vac. readings, oil press live gauge, scan tool live data etc. Oh and it wasn't the PCV valve the dealer replaced. My other Accord is a 2004 with 218k miles and NEVER USES A DROP!!!!!!! You should see my dipstick that the dealer has scratched marks on each time they have checked the level. Then we have to go back in a week and recheck. Real technical stuff.

Update from Jan 5, 2011: Well dealer had us bring it in. They have pulled head "looks good" they stated that it "must be the rings" I asked if there was a problem with the wet compression test and they said it passed the compression test. Hmm. Ok. Said they were most likely going to rebuild engine. I know that there was an issue with oil pump (tsb) noise/clearance. I wonder if it is a problem with volume? The pumps job is volume, right? Pressure can build with no real volume. Bad for moving parts! Ours sounded like the Jetson's when you accelerate. Might explain why after 1k miles Mobile1 always seams broken down in my engine. We'll see where this goes and what the dealer winds up doin. I don't like having a 2008 with 70k and a rebuilt engine. Ed

Same problems as others have listed. Using 3 qts of oil per 3000 miles and have had one plug replaced to date. When the plug was replaced was told it was a computer problem and reprogramed it with a fix. As of this date have been told 1 qt per 1000 miles was ok and I told them I would not except that answere. Then was told a solution was due after Thanks Giving. (Possible computer problem). I do not beleave this unless there is a dump valve that the computer dumps the oil out. Waiting for Thanks Giving then heading back. This is my 5th Honda ( most with 150000 miles plus) and depending on the outcome may be the last

For over 8 months my Honda dealership has been 'fixing' this 'oil consumption' issue.

At 28,208 miles the dealership said my car was low on oil. They blamed it on the PCV valve and ordered the part. At 31,681 they replaced the PCV valve and told me it was again low on oil - but that the replaced valve should fix that.

At 32703 they did a consumption test again and said it had consumed oil but was not excessive, they topped it off and sent me on my way. At 37,953 with my Maintenance Minder at 40% my oil light blinked.

I took the car in and again it was almost completely out of oil - nothing showed on the stick. Again, they asked me to bring it back in 1,000 miles.

39,040 - brought it back - again they topped it off and asked me to come back in 1,000 miles.

Today, I did that - they then proceeded to tell me that my car is consuming about 1/2 a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. The technician told me that Honda considers anything at or under 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles is acceptable. He put a stick on my car and said I should change my oil every 3,000 miles instead of the maintenance minder.

Furious is how I would describe myself now.

I have documented the details and submitted them to the state Attorney General's office for Consumer Complaints. I will wait to hear back from them if they can persuade Honda to do the right thing. If that does not work, next step is consulting an attorney to view my options for arbitration and/or court.

Ok.. so I'm driving my car (it's a 2008, bought it 2007, one of the first in the county to purchase the new sedan) and the last week had noted a noise, worse when shifting from 1st-2nd gear and when turning, then all of a sudden my oil light would come on when coming to a stop. I took it in and the oil tank that holds 4.5 qts of oil required 4.25 qts!!!!!!!!! There was/is no leak. Sure enough, as I'm researching, this seems to be a common problem. I'm so pissed, why the hell would this happen to the "sacred" HONDA???? I've owned nothing but Honda's and Toyota's and NEVER thought this would happen to ANY of my Honda's!!!!! At first I thought I'll trade it in, but I don't want another headache! Now what? Can't rely on a Honda, what do you do??

My next step is to the dealership..... Someone needs to give me answers!

I am also having the same issue with my 2008 Honda Accord EXL. The car has 27000 miles. The oil change before the last I checked my fluids in my car and found the oil level to me 1.5 qts low. At my next oil change I asked the service manager about this but he just said that it is normal for the car to burn 1qt every 1000 miles like the rest of you stated. I am assuming Honda Corp as directed them to say this. I have had new Honda's since 1990 this is my 8th honda and this is very frustrating. They tell me they to bring the car in every 1000 miles to let them check it. I explained to them that it is terrible for them to think someone has the time to come in to the dealership every 1000 miles to have their oil checked. He was rude with me and says I asked him to help me and if I wanted the help that is what I would do. I called Honda Corp and reported this but I am sure this will not help anything. I guess we are all screwed either keep the car and the problems or trade it in and let it become someone else problem.

I HATE this car. This is my third post, this time because it uses oil. I never check the oil--why should you need to on a good car? For my 40K oil change, they told me it was down 2 quarts, so I began to keep an eye on it. I noticed that the oil pressure light would go on when I went over a bump, so I went back to the dealer and they checked it and added oil before the next change. The service manager advised me to keep coming back for oil consumption tests, which I did. Then I had the 50 k oil change, and was too busy to keep going back. Yesterday the oil light went on again, 4000 miles after the oil change and it is down 2 quarts. We haven't even begun to address what's wrong.

I can't wait to get rid of this car. I expect the next thing that will happen is I will need my third set of brakes soon. There was also another problem, can't remember what they told me it was, where if you turned the car on it made a noise as if it were already running. They fixed that one for free without me needing to yell.

I also have a 2008 Honda Accord - we bought on the belief "car is dependable and will last 300k miles. I have 67000 highway miles in 2 1/2 years of driving to and from work, get oil changed per the Oil Life sensor. Last month I noticed the oil pressure light coming on when I would pull up to a stop light. Took to local oil change place to ask for a top off and they had to add 2 1/4 quarts - was shocked as were they. They looked and no leaks, everything was tight. I drove away thinking it was odd - I did not notice any leaks at home or white smoke when driving, I don't drive the car like a race car (its only a 4 cylinder). LOL!!! A few weeks later getting gas decided to check oil and needed to add another 1 1/2 quarts. Looked at oil and anti-freeze to see if there was odd liquids in there... nothing. Accord EX 3.5L V6

Honda will not be able dismiss this serious problem and terrible engineering flaw with their L4 and V6 engines any longer. These engines went into production 2008. My prediction is that they will do a massive recall on these engines, irrelevant of mileage. I have seen this problem on 2008, 2009 and 2010 cars with the 4 and 6 cylinders and with mileage as low as 10 K Miles. The cause of this problem from a design standpoint is Honda's change from basic 4 CYL and V6 engine technology that they have had since the mid nineties, to a variable displacement design that shuts off two cylinders on the L 4 and 3 cylinders on the V6 under light load cruising. In principle, it is a great idea that improves the volumetric efficiency of an internal combustion gasoline engine. In practice, Honda failed to enforce the combustion chambers, pistons and cylinders of these engines since the load is doubled on the contributing cylinders. In addition, Honda failed to manage the proper heat transfer which becomes excessive in the contributing cylinders. In addition, they have continued to use very low tension piston rings to reduce frictional drag which allows burnt hydrocarbons to blow by and thus damaging the oil rings, which leads to excessive oil consumption after 10 K miles.

In addition, this problem of excessive oil consumption goes hand in hand with spark fouling and engine misfire, because the excessive heat and engine oil burning in the combustion chambers is damaging the spark plugs and causing the insulators to fail, which drop pieces of ceramic material inside the combustion chamber causing further damage. Cleaning the fuel systems or the fuel injectors is a game to divert the blame and charge the owner for unnecessary work by the dealer.

My recommendation is to refuse such work and ask for a Lemon Buy-back or a full engine replacement.

I have the same problem as a lot of you guys with the oil consumption in my 2 year old Accord! The dealer puts me off every time! They keep saying they will have a "fix." I have an open Honda case and when I call my case manager states she is going to call the dealer and will research the issue. NOTHING gets done. I have gone through many spark plugs and a catalytic converter. I'm now at 54000 miles when the problem with oil consumption occurred at 37000 miles. Last month I went in for an oil change and there was almost NO OIL in the car. Even the technicians were stumped. They have no idea why it's burning through 3 quarts of oil every 4-5k! All they say is there is a software update coming out in a few weeks. They updated the software in July and that did NOTHING! This is sad, it's their motor, they should know how to fix it. They are putting me off because they know the powertrain warranty runs out in 6k more miles! What do I need to do?! This has gone on too long....Does anyone else have any advice for me? I have considered trading but I paid too much for this car to just let it go. I may just buy a beater and park this until they fix it. I'm going to call Better Business Bureau today and see if I get anywhere....will keep you all posted.

Update from Jan 25, 2011: Hey guys---Honda won't fix my car for me, they keep referring me back to the dealership. The dealership states they have a software update (been there done that) that will help to stop the oil consumption. Oh well, at least it hasn't broken down on me fingers crossed, knock on wood I went 4000 between oil changes and it was 2 1/2 qts. low! Well I've got 60 k on my car now, bet Honda can't wait for me to cross over the 100k warranty. I know this is doing so much damage to all the engine components. I've already been through a few spark plugs and a catalytic converter. I heard someone mention a class action lawsuit. Anyone have a lawyer friend that could help us all????

Update from Mar 3, 2011: Anyone ever get any help on this issue? Or are your Honda's still burning through oil too?

Update from Oct 8, 2011: Just wanted to update you guys, I got rid of the car in June. No more car stress! Even better--I broke even on the deal so I'm not upside down on the loan! Honda never fixed it for me, issues were getting worse and I didn't want to run out of oil and be stuck on the side of the road. It sure was a pretty car and I miss all the bells and whistles but I will never miss the hassle and stress it caused me! It's not worth the fight, if you can, get rid of the oil burner! It's bound to mess up the motor and you're going to have to spend money to rebuild it sooner than later.
