This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.

Original speedometer failed at 21745 miles by becoming erratic at speeds of about 55 mph. The meter would sometimes read as high as 90 mph. This meter was replaced under warranty and now the replacement unit is faulty at 23300 miles. A brief scan of your ODI ids indicates the problem is generic with these devices as some units have been replaced 3 and 4 times. It is definitely a safety hazard having thousands of Ford on the highway with faulty speedometers and they should be recalled and replaced.
The original speedometer was replaced at 38,000 miles. The new speedometer became defective (bouncing up and down, inaccurate, finally, inserviceable) when it had about 35,000 on it. I have reported the defect to the dealer, Ford customer service, and have written to the president of Ford. All replies were negative. Since my complaint to the president of Ford, the part has gone up from $250 to $500 (in a matter of 3-4 months).
While driving at about 40 mph speedometer goes up to about 80 to 85mph. When this happens one doesn't know how fast vehicle is going. Speedometer arm bounces between 65 and 85 mph.
Speedometer failed December of 1997 and was replaced Jan. 3,1998. However, possible defect of the replaced speedometer failed on June 1999 and was replaced again July 6, 1999.
While drving the car, the speedomotor does not operate properly. The needle jumps around and the unit makes a loud buzzing noise. On a long trip, this noise make driving very distracting and I never know how fast I am driving. Both Ford and the dealer have advised me that the repair of this problem is my responsibilty even though I have argued that I did nothing to incur the damage. Is this type of complaint reviewed by your organization? I appreciate your help.
Speedometer head failure produces erratic display for prolonged periods. This is the second failure of this unit - first at approximately 60K, second at 116K. Ford refuses to acknowledge defect - local Ford Agency parts manager affirms that this part is a common failure. Ford refuses to negoitiate even a partial reimbursement. This failure is attributable to a manufacturing defect and is not due to normal wear.
Due to the defective speedometer cable the needle does not to go over 20 mph or does not work over 50 mph. The speedometer broke 4 times. Dealer cannot determine the caus eof the problem.
Speedometer was repaired/replaced due to erratic operation while under warranty. Litter over a year later same problem reoccurred. But dealer/mfr. Refused to repair because part was out of warranty. Seeking help from NHTSA in this matter. Believed dealer installed defective part.
Speedometer buzzes and jumps 10-20 mph making ability to tell speed impossible. This is the second failure. The first occurred at 35000 miles, and was covered under warranty. It happened again at 35000 miles on the replacement. Dealers and Ford have R
Speedometer jumps from 65 to 85 depending on how large a bump you hit. Dealer informed me that replacement part was also faulty and could not replace at the time.
When driving over 55mph, consumer can't determine how fast he is traveling due to broken speedometer. This was the second time that the speedometer was repaired.
On two occasions vehicle experienced problem with erratic opration of speedometer. Dealer replaced the speedometer after first failure. However, problem reoccurred, and dealer refused to repair replace speedometer a second time due to expiration of warranty. Can NHTSA help in this mater.
