This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The speedometer reads incorrectly at speeds over 50mph, especially on rough roads. Dealer has replaced the speedometer twice, and is about to replace it one more time.
Original speedometer was replaced at 23000 miles. The replacement has developed the same problem. It jumps at speeds above 50, and does not show the correct speed when going slower. It is difficult to tell what speed you are going. Dealer says they have never heard of a vehicle having this problem twice. They will not accept any responsibility for the problem. They also said they cannot give me the defective part after they remove it. Said they have to send it back to Ford to be refurbished. I own the car, and therefore own all of its component parts. What is going on with the Taurus speedometers" is Ford going to be held responsible"
Speedometer needle begins to bounce to 85 when wheels hit any bump at speeds over 55 miles per hour. Needle hangs at that point for up to 25 seconds making it impossible to determine actual speed, or whether or not the cruise control is properly set. Original speedometer failed at 15,000, replaced at about 19,000; first replacement at 30,000, replaced at 36,000; and second replacement at 49,000. Ford will not replace because out of warranty, although every speedometer has failed at about 15,000 miles. Due to the number of failures reported to nhtsb by Taurus owners, and the inability to determine actual speed, this is a safety issue and it would appear that a recall is warranted. $600 for a replacement every 15,000 miles is not reasonable. I have never owned a car in over 40 years of driving where even one speedometer failed.
1st failure was around 11,300 miles. Dealer fixed and replaced. Failed again in 4-20-97 at 22,100 miles, dealer replaced again. Car now has 30, plus showing on 3rd odometer and is out of warranty but they will not fix. It went out again 8-10 1998.

Speedometer: Would make noise; not working properly; can not tell what the speed is; had it replaced due to bouncing around. ABS system had erractic pattern.
Speedometer failed.jumps from 40 to 85+ back & forth. Noise in dash. This occured in the beginning of a 1000 mile trip on unfamiliar roads at night. This was highly distracting and dangerous especially when I had no clue how fast I was actually going on high speed highways. It appears that Ford documented it knows of this common failure and why it occures but does not recall cars and expects owners to pay if out of bumper to bumber warranty. My appointment for this repair & mount recall are 6/17 6:00pm.
While driving speedometer moves around and around, and consumer can't determine what's the speed. Also, when driving at 10 mph speedometer will state that consumer is driving at 75 mph. Dealer can't determine the problem.
Taurus or Ford will never be no.1 with me again. Massive failures known with Taurus speedometer heads. Say something in Dodge Voyager and doors flying open. When will something be done? right now if you got $250 and the time and will accept a 90 day or low mileage guarantee.
Speedometer jumps from 65 to 85 depending on how large a bump you hit. Dealer informed me that replacement part was also faulty and could not replace at the time.
Speedometer failed three times. This last failure, have not replaced yet. Speedometer operates erratically, causing inaccurate speed readings. First failure replaced, no charge, by jack trebour Ford dealer, dover NJ. Second failure fixed by private garage because trebour Ford said not under warranty. Just learned of NHTSA website and voq. Will want to pursue Ford dealer or manufacturer to replace third failure as warranty work.
