This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Speedometer goes haywire after it goes past 45mph. The 1st time the cable was greased, and it worked fine. Afterward, it started back with the same problem. Now, dealer says it has to be replaced, and the part alone, cost without labor, $500.
Speedometer failed for the 2nd time and warranty won't cover it. Needle vibrates and becomes useless above 50 mph. How many speedometers have to fail before they are an ackowledged defect?
Speedometer needle wobbles all over, making speedometer useless, you can not tell how fast you are going. Estimated repair cost $300. Apparently the manufacturer has had problems because there have been part number changes. Also I have talked to other owners with the same problem.
Speedometer head failure produces erratic display for prolonged periods. This is the second failure of this unit - first at approximately 30K and was repalced by the dealer, second at 41K.
Originial speedometer failed in April 1998. Was replaced on 5/7/98. On 12/31/99, replacement speedometer failed also. I have been informed that there is now an "updated model". I need to have the current speedometer replaced, again, and so this will be the third.
Original speedometer and odometer failed at 24840 miles-repaired by dealer. Original odometer failed again at 24840 miles-speedo assembly replaced by dealer. Replacement speedometer failed again at 47840 miles-speedo assembly replaced by dealer. Second replacement speedometer failed again at 62895 miles-dealer refuses to replace due to warrantee expiration. Three failures of the same component at approx 25000 mile intervals is not normal, and problem has never been completely corrected, nor has root cause ever been identified. Ford has service bulletins on this problem from 1991 to 1995 on more than just the Taurus model. Ford should determine the root cause and repair my vehicle at no charge - regardless of any warrantee verbiage to the contrary. Current Ford dealership (joe myers' Ford of houston) is not cooperative in resolving problem - regional rep denied warrantee assistance based solely on paperwork and refuses to meet with customers to resolve unusual problems or situations.
While driving at highway speeds speedometer bounces back and forth, and is not correctly reading speed of vehicle. Dealer has been contacted, replaced the odometer 3 times. The problem has started again.
Consumer has replaced the speedometer once, and has to replace it again. When driving over 45 mph it just starts to spin, and the consumer can't tell how fast they're going. Dealer was contacted, and consumer has to pay out of pocket for repairs.
Speedodometer replaced 02/03/1998 with only 29776 miles on it co says they will talk to me about it when I go in next week. Way isnt the Ford co ereplacing these its semms to be a problem on all 95 Taurus?
Speedometer needle jumped around at highway speeds making it impossible to determine speed. First occurrance was at approximately 19000 miles, speedometer replaced at 21215 miles; problem recurred at approximately 33000 miles, dealer lubed speedometer cable; problem recurred at approximately 50,000 miles, speedometer replaced at 51252 miles; problem recurred at at 69,650 miles, scheduled to have speedometer replaced again making this the fourth speedometer since I purchased the vehicle new.

I have had 3 speedometers fail within 60,000 miles over a 2 year time period. The needle on the speedometer sticks or bounces back and forth, the first time was at 32,000 miles and I believe it was February of 1998. The car was still under warrenty at that time. The second time it failed was at about 55,000 miles in Sept. Of 1998. Because my daily commute is so long, I was well over the 12,000 mile warrenty on the replacement part, even though it had only been 6 months. I did not have the part replaced until January or February because of the cost. At the time I had the speedometer replaced I was at 60,000 miles. At that time I pleaded with Ford to extend the milage limit on the part because I just knew the thing wouldn't last a year. They refused, of course, and insist they have had no reports of similar problems. None of the dealerships I have dealth with on this are willing to help either. As expected, I started experiencing problems with the speedometer in November of 1999, about 7 months after the last replacement. Because the car was at 81,000 miles I couldn't get anyone to even discuss it with me. I have since found information - via the web - that suggests there has been as service bullutin issued on this problem.
Speedometer failed on two occasions. 1st failure commenced at 59,000 miles of wear; and 2nd failure occurred at 77,000 miles. Dealer notified and refused to repair unless cost is picked up by consumer.
