Sister was driving a 2011 Ford Fusion hybrid home from work on the freeway going about 80mph as she lost power steering. She went up an embankment and flew threw the air and hit a pillar. We know advance trac light was coming on the day before that from her google activity. She will never be able to tell us because she died in the crash that was cause from the power steering loss on 8/29/17. She was 17 yrs old. This is a tragic loss for our family and is not ok for Ford to sell cars like this. Someone do something!!!!

I am contacting you regarding a fatal car accident that my sister was just killed in on 8/29/17. She drove a 2011 Ford Fusion hybrid. My mother did not know about the issues many people have with these model cars. She would have never bought the car if she did. My sister was driving home from work when witnesses said that for reasons unknown to them out of no where my sisters car veered to the right onto an overpass embankment on I-580 at the 132 over pass crossing just West of vernalis, ca. She then went over the entire embankment and became airborne for 127 feet before smashing into the concrete pillar that supports the 132 bridge. She was killed instantly and pronounced deceased at 4:10 pm. In the California highway patrol collision report it says that the cause of the accident was an unsafe right turn. But there is no road to turn on, so why would someone turn there? she did not try to turn, we believe that her steering wheel veered to the right and locked up on her making her lose control of her car. This is because through 2010 to 2013 Ford Fusion models have a major issue with the epas steering suddenly going out and kicking the manual steering in. In 2015 there was a recall issued for the epas steering. When I checked my sisters VIN # to her car, it lists 2 recalls, one being the epas steering and the other being the airbag recall that was a major issue as well. We are not concerned with this being the cause of my sisters accident. We are concerned with the epas steering and have done extensive research on the recall, enough to know that this is what malfunctioned in her vehicle and caused her to crash, killing her.

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Fusion hybrid. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle hesitated without warning. In addition, while driving the vehicle to the dealer, the steering wheel seized intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (kruse motor sales ltd, 515 broadway St, baraboo, wi, 53913) where it was diagnosed that the coolant motor and power steering failed and needed to be replaced. The coolant motor was replaced along with the spark plugs; however, the power steering was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was a recall under NHTSA campaign number: 15V340000 (steering), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer informed the contact to have the vehicle taken to a Ford dealer for diagnostic testing. The local Ford dealer was notified. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

Steering: 15S18: 03/06/2017, spoke to bemond of Ford motor customer service dept. He informed me there is a recall of this vehicle but Ford would not authorize a repair unless the car lost the power steering and changed to manual steering. I offered that sudden loss of power steering while traveling interstate speeds could cause an acccident and/or death of occupants. Since Ford motor knows about this problem they should authorize the repair before it shows symptons.

Power steering and advancetrac failed during driving. The steering wheel suddenly became very hard to turn. I barely could avoid a collision. In an earlier event, the hybrid system malfunctioned and the car accelerated with maximum electric power despite the foot being off the accelerator. The vehicle could be stopped and and worked again normally after turning off the ignition key.

While driving 35-40 mph in the city, the service advancetrac and service power steering now lights came on as well as tcs off and tcs on indicators and it was becoming harder to drive. Once I reached my destination and I restarted the car I had no power steering assist. This is the second occasion. First time my boyfriend was driving 11/20/15 and described the same occurances. It was taken to a Ford dealer ft wayne Indiana and was told it was the steering gear. This was replaced and ive learned that its been part of a recall. So $1700 later it was fine. Picked up my vehicle Dec 1 then the second occurance was just 10 days later on Dec 11. Taken to the dealer once again. The dealer cleared the codes and recalibrated and power steering was back but now im told the control arms caused it this time.

Lost power steering and the advance track system. The steering wheel was to hard to turn for my wife and made the car undriveable. It was trailered to a dealer for repair. This a common problem for this year and very costly to fix.

Started car, went to back up and noticed very quickly I had no power steering - power steering assist fault error message displayed. I am currently unable to use my Ford Fusion due to the lack of power steering. It would be hazardous for me to try and drive my Fusion at this time.

Power steering warning message and advancetrac assist both became illuminated after normal driving. This is the 3rd time this has occurred. The first was just over 38000 miles, the second at 75000 miles and now this week at 89000 miles. After turning off vehicle and turning back on, the indicator messages went from just a warning to the whole system becoming disabled. Power steering is completely off and steering is nearly impossible. We were 200 miles from home on a holiday weekend knowing it would be difficult to get towing so we decided to make the drive without power steering. A very dangerous situation for us. Ford knows about these problems and there are thousands of complaints online. A recall has to be made. The first time it happened I took it to the dealer and they wanted $3200 for an entire steering system. My car was only 2000 miles above warranty and they wouldn't cover it. So I had them reset the code and the steering began working again for another three years without incident. Please protect the consumer and the public's safety by making Ford recall the Fusion. It clearly has a steering flaw. Thank you.

When driving through town at 25 mph a warning sound and text "service steering system now" came on the dash and steering was very difficult, requiring all my arm strength to steer the car at low speeds. I was able to park without incident. I turned the car off then back on. The same message appeared. I drove the car home, then the next day to the Ford dealer with no power steering and lots of physical effort to keep the car on the road. Had this occurred the previous day when I was on I-66I in northern va, it could have been very bad. Why would this happen in a 3 year old car that costs 35K?

Fusion Hybrid 4-cyl

  • 51,200 miles
Steering the vehicle became harder over the weekend. Not significantly, but somewhat more difficult than normal. It felt like I was fighting the steering some. It wanted to do one thing and I wanted it to do something else. Before I was able to get it in the shop, the steering began to catch each time the wheel was turned in the opposite direction. It did not affect directional control, but was an annoyance. The steering wheel pressure required to turn remained the same as after the initial incident. When taken to the shop, they indicated the electronic steering control was making a noise and possibly causing the catching and recommended I take it to the dealer. The dealer replaced the entire rack and pinion system and the associated electronic steering control at significant cost. This is the first time I have ever had steering issues on any car and most of my vehicles are not replaced until close to 200,000 miles. I researched the issue and found that NHTSA is investigating the steering on the Fusion and want to provide this information for the investigation.

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, the service steering now warning message illuminated as the steering wheel seized and excessive force was required. The contact merged over to the emergency lane and shut the vehicle off. The vehicle was restarted and the steering resumed normal operation. However, the failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis and they stated that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The dealer reprogrammed the electrical power steering but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000. The VIN was unavailable.

The car began to pull to one side intermittently. It was easy to correct but when I relaxed my grip on the steering wheel it turned left. This occurred intermittently since, sometimes several times in a few minutes, sometimes only a few times per week. This seems to happen more often when I apply the brake. I took the car to the Ford dealer on May 17, 2014. They were unable to find anything in the computer or replicate the problem while driving the car. The problem continues intermittently. At present it has only been a minor issue but I believe it would be dangerous if the pull was stronger or it took more effort to correct the steering.

Fusion Hybrid

  • 21,503 miles
While attempting to park the car, the power steering froze. With great effort I was barely able to turn the wheel and complete the parking. After turning the engine off, for some unknown reason, I turned the engine on again and the power steering was operating normally. The next day I drove to the nearest Ford dealership and the steering was normal. The repair charge for replacing the electronic steering mechanism was $1704. I have since learned (via google) that this problem is common in Ford vehicles that have switched from hydraulic to electronic power steering. Had the power steering locked while I was switching lanes in heavy traffic, or attempting to pass on a two lane road, I might not have been able to write this note. Clearly, a recall is in order.

Fusion Hybrid

  • 60,000 miles
Indicator light "wrench" came on to inform me of an issue. Then shortly thereafter, a light came on that said "service accutrac" (traction control system). I took the car to the dealer who then told me that the power steering gear had to be replaced and that the traction control had to be reprogrammed. I'm concerned because I see a history of power steering recalls on many Ford models between 2010 to today and wonder if this is a recurring pattern with the 2011 Fusion hybrid model, that is not yet "realized".
