CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford significantly updated the Fusion for the 2010 model year. We wish they hadn't

Throttle body issues have led to a ton of reports about a sudden deceleration and loss of power while driving. Ford issued a “customer satisfaction program” in March 2014 that, unsurprisingly, has left very few customers satisfied.

2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

Service advancetrac message pops up randomly on dash. Power steering failure occurs randomly, especially while turning at slower speeds, and is accompanied by power steering assist failure message. The car is very hard to steer at this time, but so far that issue is resolved if I am able to shut off the car for a few minutes and then restart. This started about 6 months ago but most recent was 6/20/18.

My family has had this car since it was brand new with this problem reoccurring both at start up and driving in motion! my son was just driving down the street when the steering went out while he was attempting to go around a corner and almost hit several pedestrians and other cars! then it came back on later then went out again on the highway which are mtn. Roads where we live and about went off a cliff! I have also experience doing the same thing with me, (a very experienced professional driver) driving with near misses due to same thing happening then going away with no problem for months if not years. This is unacceptable and unreal that there are this many complaints and accidents and injuries due to this problem and nothing done to fix it! this is a known problem and other years 2011 and 2012 with the same problem got recalled except for the 2010, all with the same problem! if nothing is done about this I will be inclined to make this very public and have the resources to do so! this is negligence on Ford's part and and the NHTSA's part for not acting appropriately to this well known problem!

Loss of full control of vehicle while driving. Service power steering/service advance track warning came on and will not go away. I am not able to drive the vehicle safely as I do not have full control of steering. I nearly had an accident strongarming the vehicle off the highway after loss of power steering.

Electronic power steering system went out on my 2010 Fusion SE. It's been diagnosed as a recall issue for the 2011 and up. Ford some managed to get around the recalling the 2010's the problem costs around 2K to fix. I'm unable to use my car until I can raise the money to fund a repair I should not have to pay for. There are over 800 complaints on the 2010 Fusion and a recall on the following year for the same problem...what gives here nthsa" I nearly had a wreck with this issue"

My power steering went out in March of 2016. I had to pay out of pocket because there was not a recall on the 2010's just the 2011 and 2012's. well here it is, 2018 and my power steering went out again... I cant see myself paying another $1500 for something that is out of my control. Seems as if it happens while the car is sitting. I can recall driving and a light came across my dash. I didn't know what the light meant and I didn't notice any change with my car until the next morning when I tried pulling out of my driveway. Its extremely dangerous!!!

I turned in my Ford Fusion after all the gauges stopped moving and I let the computer turn on. When I did this the warning about service advanced trac blinked on and said power steering assist fault. I turned off my vehicle again and same thing. The error code has not gone away and my vehicle no longer has power steering.

The exact same problem for which 2011-2015 Ford Fusion were recalled is a major problem for 2010. I am replacing my rack and pinion as a result of a total power steering failure. This is a severe safety issue and could have resulted in loss of life during the failure. There was no warning that the power steering would fail, and clearly was a problem on model years including and following this one, but 2010 was not included in the recall. Cost to repair is $1700+

Power steering assist fault. Suddenly lost power steering while driving car. Turned car off and then back on and fault went away and regained power steering for a few weeks. Lost power steering again while driving and car violently jerked to the right. After turning ignition key on and off several times the steering assist fault would not go away. Drove car home without power steering and fault will not disappear.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. Every time the vehicle was started, the "service power steering" indicator would illuminate on the message center. The failure occurred since October of 2017. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and it was determined that the power steering column had to be replaced. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

Back in April, my son was driving the car. He was getting off of one highway and merging onto another major highway. While going around the bend, the power steering gave out and he was not able to turn the wheel. He hit the curb, blew the drivers side tire and bounced to the right, where he could have went over into the river below. Thankfully he did not and came out of if safely. No other vehicles were involved. The car had to be towed. I put a case in with Ford, and they denied my claim. No rhyme or reason as when I asked why, they could not tell me. Now just because this is only a specified VIN number recall doesn't mean this cannot happen to the other 2010 Fusion. I had the car towed a few weeks later to a Ford dealership, and they gave me an estimate of $2395 plus tax. Now, that is for the rack & pinion, aka, steering column, tire, clock spring or something and a couple of other things. If the outcome of the accident had been different, Ford probably would have paid for it. All I have driven are Ford, my whole entire family has Ford. So, what is the next step for me to take? I am going to talk to a lawyer to see what my options are.

My car was having multiple issues. First the epas system went out as I was driving. There was a recall for previous versions but when I looked up the 2010 Ford Fusion 3.0lv6 AWD it was not included even though it was one of the pioneer vehicles of Ford to have the system. Once I got the power steering repaired I started hearing a grinding. As I drove the car to my house to get a safe look all of a sudden there was a jerking and crunching sound as I drove on a straight road with slight grading. Luckily I was only going 35mph and was able to control the vehicle. I took it to the mechanic and found out that it was the power transfer unit and the rear drive shaft. After talking to the mechanic he said that the ptu is one of the most commonly replaced parts in the AWD Ford vehicles. It is obvious after more research that Ford is well aware that they are providing a faulty product and are placing them in all of their AWD systems. My understanding is that the ptu unit in the Ford Fusion 2010 is the same as in all other Ford AWD vehicles. Since I spent so much money to get the power steering fixed I had to put my car in a garage for the winter so I could save up to fix the now funked ptu. My car hasn't even cracked 89K miles.

While backing out of parking lot, power steering went out completely and a warning message appeared stating there was a power steering assist fault while beeping repeatedly. I turned the car off and on again and it returned to normal. A week later the same thing happened when backing out of another parking lot. This time it didn't return to normal after turning the car on and off. The message remains and the car is unsafe and undrivable. I need my car and don't have the $1500 to repair this safety issue. I know it's been under investigation but when will it finally be recalled? luckily my teenagers weren't driving. Please help!

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. When the vehicle was started and while driving various speeds, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. On several occasions, while driving, the contact was unable to turn the steering wheel to the left or right. When the contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned off and restarted the engine, the steering ability returned to normal. While in traffic, the key had to be turned in the ignition several times to regain steering function. The contact diagnosed the vehicle himself and located a failure code at the steering wheel rack. The steering wheel rack was not replaced. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 156,000.

Power steering stopped working while backing out of driveway. Notice lit up on dash steering assist fault. Turned vehicle off and restarted which cleared message and power steering would operate. 2010 Fusion not included in recall for this failure. Was advised by Ford dealer D that since it happened once it would happen again. Do not feel safe driving vehicle. Will need to have repair at my expense since 2010 not covered by recall.
