CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford significantly updated the Fusion for the 2010 model year. We wish they hadn't

Throttle body issues have led to a ton of reports about a sudden deceleration and loss of power while driving. Ford issued a “customer satisfaction program” in March 2014 that, unsurprisingly, has left very few customers satisfied.

2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the brakes failed to function properly when applied. The brake pedal traveled to the floorboard several times, which caused the contact to have to apply force and pump the brake pedal each time the failure occurred. In addition, the electric power steering failed and caused the steering wheel to become extremely tight when attempting to turn in either direction. The vehicle was also serviced for a manufacturer extended warranty campaign regarding the throttle body; however, the contact noticed that the vehicle was slow to accelerate while the other two failures progressed. The dealer (worthington Ford, 2950 N bellflower blvd, long beach, ca 90815, (562) 420-3333) was unable to provide a permanent remedy yet for the three failures that were experienced. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA action numbers: EA17004 (steering) and PE13003 (engine). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The contact was waiting for a response from the manufacturer to determine if they could provide a permanent repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN and failure mileage were not available.

I was driving around 30-40 mph on city streets when the power steering went out and the "service power steering now" light came on. Steering the car became very difficult at that time and I had to pull into the nearest parking lot. I had to call a tow truck and have the car towed to my house because I could not turn the car steering wheel to drive it.

After starting my 2010 Ford Fusion the steering locked up and would not turn either way. A warning message popped up " power steering assist fault." I called a local Ford dealer who told me they didn't have time to check it call back next week. Also charge over $100 to check it. There is a recall on 2011 and above for the same thing. I restarted the car and everything was ok for now. This is very dangerous to the public. Fix it Ford.

Got the 'power steer system fault' message for the first time a couple days ago, turned my car off then on and the message went away. Started my car yesterday and they message returned. Turned my car off then on again several times to no avail. This is my only car so I am forced to risk my whole life to get around. I don't understand what the hold up is on this recall. Ford knows their ids is flawed and have recalled 2011 and 2012 Fusion for the same problem. They need to fix their mistake before I get ran over or run someone else over. Not to mention I have a manual transmission. Help me lord. Idk what will break first, my wrists or the steering column.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. While driving at unknown speeds, the steering wheel was difficult to move left and right. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and was informed that the steering module needed to be repaired. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (bill talley Ford Inc, 6280 mechanicsville tpke, mechanicsville, va 23111, (800) 260-5082) where it was diagnosed that the power steering needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and did not assist. The failure mileage was 109,000. * consumer stated she began having issues with the power steering in June of this year. When staring the car, I would sometimes get an alert on my dashboard which read "power steering assist fault." I had no power steering at all. I had to strain and use my entire body to maneuver the vehicle. I know that was extremely dangerous, but the Fusion is the only mode of transportaiton I have. The power steering would return the next time I started the car. This went on for a couple of weeks, with the same alert showing on the dash ("power steering assist fault"). the power steering never went out on me when the car was in motion. It would fail occasionally when I started the car, then return the next time I drove the car. Then at the end of June, the power steering system went completely out. Updated 10/30/18

Takata recall. The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the part was not available within a reasonable time frame to schedule a recall repair for NHTSA campaign number: 18V046000 (air bags). The dealer (glen sain Ford, Inc., 1301 us 49, paragould, ar 72450, (870) 236-8546) indicated that the vehicle was placed on a waiting list for the part months ago. In addition, the electronic power steering randomly failed and caused the steering wheel to become difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15V340000 (steering) although the symptoms were related. The steering failure was not diagnosed by the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that there was a delay in receiving the parts for the air bag recall. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

Power steering assist fault issue: I start the car in the parking lot and the error on the panel states, power steering assist fault. The wheel is pretty much locked. I shut the car off, wait a few minutes and start the car again. The error is gone and the wheel is movable. This has happened twice about 3 months apart. The vehicle has 86,000 miles. I'm concerned that this will happen while driving as it has happened to other owners of 2010 Fusion. I noticed there is a recall from 2011 -2015 for this exact issue. Will there be one for the 2010 models?

Electric power steering assist is throwing faults, making the car undriveable. Recalls have been issued for other Ford models with this epsa system. Last car checkup returned no fault messages (car was serviced for new tires and point inspection last week of June 2018). The fault usually occurs on initial startup. Per the user manual, upon a fault occurring you shut off the car and wait 10 seconds for the power system to reset, then re start the car. Usually the fault will go away but now it is more persistent. The fault will not go away by driving it off. This is an expensive roughly $1500 repair that should not be happening. Most reports point to a faulty sensor. Fault message automatically shuts off the epsa regardless of if it is mechanically sound or not, which is very dangerous if driving on the highway or busy downtown streets. Risk of accident is dramatically increased with this fault.

I just bought a 2010 Ford Fusion for my 17 yo son, his 1st car what a great gift & surprise, right? specially the surprise part, we my 3 boys and I went to P/U the car at my place of work where I kept it so yay surprise, my oldest getting his 1st car see the boys cheering, laughing having a good, so my oldest & youngest (11 yo) got into the car & we brought it to a tire shop the only thing the car needed was new tires, about an hour later we went back to the shop to pick up the Fusion looking good so my youngest kiddo decided to stay with his big brother so happy for him, the new car deal etc, etc he just wanted to be with his big buddy as he call him so on our way home about 10 blocks away from the shop & 5 blocks away from home we are traveling at a 30 mph speed on a city street I noticed that his driving was kind of funny and he was getting close to do a right turn at a busy with heavy traffic intersection, I thought he was fooling around some how he managed to pull over at safe place when I got out of my truck and approached him I was about to scream at him, before I said anything he said to me " that was creepy, dad why is the steering wheel so hard" is it normal, because it has new tires? so brought it back to the shop & the said that it was just fine, they inspected the car for any power steering fluid/anything, we discovered that this car has an epas!! so yeah big surprise uh!! I feel so miserable, I put 2 of my boys life's in danger. Thank god yes thank god, my son was able to stop the car safely without panicking even though his little brother was on board, now Ford want $2200 to fix the car, so Ford will recall a floor mat but not an electric power steering"

While driving my 2010 Fusion on vacation last week, my epas suddenly stopped working and the car immediately became extremely difficult to steer. At the time this happened, a warning message displayed that said, 'service advancetrac, service power steering' and a warning light came on. There were no indications of an issue prior to this. As far as I can tell, this has been a problem on many Fusion and has resulted in a recall of Fusion for other model years but not 2010 (so far??). it's frustrating that this appears to be a known issue for this vehicle, including 2010's, but the model year is not included in the recall. The local Ford dealership just told me the system needs to be replaced (this includes the steering column), and they estimated the cost to be $2200.
