When driving the vehicle at an undetermined speed, the right rear tire blew. This caused the driver to pull off the road. The consumer changed the tire. Consumer stated while driving down on interstate highway right rear tire blew out. Tire shredded completely from the sidewall to the tread. Then, consumer bought a new set of tires. Firestone, steeltex, radial at, LT265/75R16D.
Replacement of Firestone tires initiated by recall of 2/26/04. I replaced these tires in 2001 at 17,200 miles because of safety concerns. At that time there were many complaints to NHTSA and shortly thereafter an investigation was open. Ford now uses E rated tires on the Excursion which run at higher tire pressure. Once again Ford did not outfit the vehicle with a proper tire for the weight of the vehicle, rather opting for a smoother ride of a D rated tire. They were doing this because the front springs were also inadequate for a good ride. The used E rated tires on the F250 and F 350 from which the Excursion is based.
Replacement of Firestone tires initiated by recall of 2/26/04. Having replaced these tires in 2001 at 21,622 miles because of safety concerns, I am now ineligible for reimbursement because of having done so. Rather, it seems, I should have waited until the tires had malfunctioned and then, if I had survived, filed for reimbursement. Such perverse logic by Firestone should be overturned and I call on the NHTSA to have Firestone reverse its position.

On Sunday, June 1st, while returning from a fishing trip and towing a boat, the right rear tire on my Ford Excursion exploded on I-285 North of atlanta ga. I was in the lane inside the fast lane, but moving at the same speed as traffic. I was able to navigate to the shoulder and change the tire. However, because the tire exploded and wrapped itself around the axle, the rim was destroyed. I have ordered another rim from a re-manufacturer. I've E-mailed Firestone with the incident information, but have received no response.
On Sept. 27, 2002 about 40 miles before my actual blow out, I felt and heard something on the drivers' side rear tire. I thought it was a rock from my wheel well, except I was on a highway with no rocks to be found. My truck began to shake so I kept my speed at about 60 mph. About 40 miles later, my rear driver's side tire blew out. On July 3, 2002 I had all of my tires checked because I felt unsafe in my truck. My tires did not drive smoothly anymore. The factory rep. From Firestone was there and personally checked my tires and told me that they were fine condition and I had a lot of wear left on them. He told me that they would rotate and balance my tires. I submitted a report to Firestone asking for them to pay my truck repair and the cost of my tires pro-rated. They have denied my claim and stated that I hit something that made my tire blow like it did. I have sent them a letter to ask for reconsideration. Please advise. ***dimsii IVOQ entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*****770178
