CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Edge has its fair share of problems, but chief among them is an annoying “door ajar” warning light that won’t shut off even when the door is most definitely closed. While the retina-burning, ever-present false reminder on your dashboard is bad, it points to a deeper problem that can drain the battery, leave the doors unlocked while in motion, or render the key fob useless.

This is a very annoying problem since the interior lights stay on with the door ajar light on causing a serious driving obstruction and dangerous condition.

Door ajar stays on all the time. It causes the dome light to stay on which has drained my battery. Its an expensive cost for a vehicle I'm still paying on. This is the only vehicle I've bought brand new and I've had nothing but issues with it. You would think with all the complaints Ford has received they would recall it. I will never own another Ford vehicle.

I first had this problem 1.5 years ago soon after I bought my 2013 Ford Edge Sport. My warranty had just expired, but Ford did fix it at no cost. They said all they had to do was clean the sensor. Last month it started to do the same thing again and I have to be slamming the door shut various times until the warning turns off. I also have to make sure it shuts off when leaving the car, or my dome light stay on all night. This is very bad.

I have tried all the tricks posted but nothing works. Now I have to pay to get this fixed when it should be a recall. I'm a Ford fan but it's losing me as a return customer with this poor quality.

The door ajar light goes on and stays on after door is closed. I CANNOT lock myself in my car. THIS is a SAFETY issue for me. If I am in a parking lot or at a stop sign/light my doors are not locked, and I cannot lock them!

Originally had occasional door ajar/lock problem, eventually took to dealer they cleaned the door/lock. After a few months the door ajar/lock problem started again. I eventually took it into the dealer, it was no longer under warranty, the door latch was identified as the issue. Called my dealer and Ford, they would not resolve this issue as a recall.

This has been a reoccurring problem for FORD EDGE and should be recalled. Yes, the light and dinging for door ajar is irritating and drives me nuts but I can live with that. I cannot live with the SAFETY issue with not being able to lock my doors! Also is a safety issue in the event of a roll over. If doors are not locked they could pop open in an accident.

I had my vehicle less than a month when this occurred. I took it in after I researched that the door latch needed to be replaced and they stated per Ford they could only clean the latch to see if that works. This helped for a year and a half, as soon as it got cold out the door ajar light came on again. I once again took it to the Ford Dealer in my town only to be told it was going to cost me over $350.00 to have fixed because my car had too many miles and it was not covered under warranty. REALLY????? Needless to say I have not had it fixed. Hoping for a recall I guess, however I am concerned now that the battery will eventually go dead as it does leave the dome light on after shutting the car off. My other concern is the safety of my car if the doors won't lock. At what point is Ford going to stand up and fix this problem?

Certain Ford Models of this vehicle have been recalled for repairs with the same issue. Driver Door Ajar light stays, alarming periodically, while driving on and this occurs even when door is closed and locked. Tried cleaning and lubricating the mechanism but this did not work. When the door is closed and you are driving the vehicle and warning light keeps telling you the door is ajar.

When exiting the vehicle and you use the touchpad keys to lock the door, it will not always allow the door locks to engage. It often requires repeatedly slamming the door before the door lock will engage. If you use the key fob to lock the door, several hours later the door alarm will go off alerting you the vehicle was breached. The alarm can be turned off with the key fob but it may continue again later to set off the alarm. We found the only way to guarantee the alarm would not go off was to use the doors exterior touch control keypad after closing the door, as opposed to using the locks inside the door before we physically closed the doors.

We also had trouble with the interior lights not going off and the flashers blinking after the alarm was activated. All these problems are related to the door latch sensors and are a manufacturing failure on Ford's part. They offered to clean the latch (no guarantees) for $300 or replace the defective part for $450. Good for Ford, bad for us.

Door Ajar light always on, lights will not go off, keeps dinging at you while driving and gives a false sense of security not knowing whether or not to believe if one of your doors is open or shut while driving with little kids in the car. The fix is going to cost around $400.00. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!! Ford should be held accountable, this is happening on a lot of cars, not just a coincidence. All of my vehicles are Ford and this kind of thing makes me look into trying out a Chevy!

Edge Limited 3.5L V6

At first the Door Ajar light comes on randomly, not allowing you to lock your car while inside, making the alarm chirp twice to say it's not armed, leaving your interior lights on all night. Then it's most of the time. Then all of the time. I just bought this car used and already I'm plotting how I'm going to get rid of it ALL BECAUSE OF ONE DOOR ISSUE? Is it locked all night? Who knows? I had a no-power-nothing car for SIX YEARS and I'm half tempted to go buy it back rather than deal with the fact that this Edge is beeping at me EVERY TIME I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE! At least the interior lighting will dim after ten minutes, but sheesh. When will I go out and find my battery dead? When will Ford issue a recall on this type of door assembly? The one time I decide I'd be all right with a domestic vs foreign car and it goes and proves I should've just kept my old Japanese manual sedan. I mean I'm glad this seems to be the sole issue I'd have with the car (despite the prev owner losing the spare key, $200 for a replacement? $450 to fix the door when it'll probably just happen again? Forget it. )

The inside lights stay on from time to time and worry they will run my battery down. Also you're unable to lock your doors because of the ajar lights. When you have to apply your brakes, you have to hear the annoying sound of the door being ajar.

Purchased 2013 Ford Edge in 2015 as Ford Certified Used. Reported the problem the first time 7 months after purchase. All they did was (in service writer's words) "cleaned out the gunk - you should be good to go" and there was no charge.

Started happening again approximately 6 months later and getting worse. Now it is out of the "NEW" warranty and was covered under the Extended Warranty I purchased but still cost me $100 deductible.

In my opinion, since so many complaints have been filed, it should be fixed without charge by Ford under a formal recall.

If I had to pay full price, I would not have fixed it and had the chime noise wires yanked.

This is complete stupidity! Nothing that makes common sense to try and fix this works. The light stays on always, often the dome light won't shut off even while driving which is real sweet (Not). When you arm the vehicle at night the it goes off and won't reset.

Edge Limited 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 55,000 miles

My "Door Ajar" light started coming on about the time my vehicle hit 55,000 miles. All doors are shut, but the light still comes on. It prevents my doors from locking and dings at me all of the time. I'm extremely annoyed that Ford hasn't recalled this problem, as it seems to be very common in this vehicle, at the same mileage point. I'll have to take it in to get it fixed, but I don't feel that I should have to pay for this when it's happening in thousands of vehicles. Is this Ford's ploy to make some money by having all of these cars being fixed in Ford dealerships? If anything, this makes me want to avoid Ford so they can't make another dollar off of me.

Edge AWD 3.5L V6

Door ajar light and overhead dash lights activated when door is closed properly. I have used lubricant but that really doesn't help. Sometimes it requires 15 openings and closings of the driver door to turn on the ajar indicator. Once in a while the ajar will activate while driving down the road-not good at night-the overhead dash lights obscure the vision thru the windshield. This is a bad setup and there should be a recall.

Door ajar idiot light comes on and stays on dinging all the time while driving. Doors will not lock automaticity and the interior lights (2) above the rear view mirror and outside mirrors will not shut off while driving or turning the car off. We purchased and extended warranty so we had to pay $100.00 out of pocket for our deductible. Had we not had the extended warranty our bill was $598.67.

This has been a problem with Ford vehicles since 2011. I feel Ford should have recalled these vehicles and fixed the problem for free. Something should be done to protect consumers from having to pay out of their pockets for faulty parts. This was not something that happened because of anything we did nor was it something that would fall under "normal wear". It also affected our battery and now we need to also buy a new battery!
