CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Edge has its fair share of problems, but chief among them is an annoying “door ajar” warning light that won’t shut off even when the door is most definitely closed. While the retina-burning, ever-present false reminder on your dashboard is bad, it points to a deeper problem that can drain the battery, leave the doors unlocked while in motion, or render the key fob useless.

This just started a few weeks ago- door ajar light comes on. At first we could slam it a couple times and it went away. Now, starting today, it won't go off and if you're sitting still another light comes on telling you to shift into park. This only has 85k on it- we had planned on using this car like our Honda Odyssey (286,000 miles)- but after trying a US owned vehicle- not sure we will stick with them. As I see online- Ford refuses to pony up and admit there's a problem- even with well over 1500 complaints. Way to go Ford!

Update from Sep 27, 2018: I had to have this fixed through a dealer. Cost was $553.46. They changed the driver side door latch assembly.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO DEARLERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE ON THE DASH BOARD THE LIGHTS CAME ON SAYING DRIVER DOOR AJAR AND SHIFT TO PARK. SO THAT KEPT THE INSIDE LIGHTS ON AND WOULD NOT LOCK MY DOORS. AND IT DRAINED MY BATTERY SO I HAD TO TAKE OFF THE BATTERY CABLES SO IT WOULD NOT DRAIN BATTERY ANYMORE. I HAD TO EVERYDAY PUT CABLES BACK ON AND TAKE OFF WHEN I HAD TO GO SOMEWHERE OR STOP VEHICLE. THIS WENT ON THRU THE WEEKEND UNTIL DEALERSHIP WAS OPEN . THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME IT WAS COVERED UNDER MY STANDARD WARRANTY , BUT THEN THEY CAME BACK AND SAID IT WASNT AT THE LAST MINUTE. I ASKED THEM WHY AND THEY SAID BECAUSE ITS NOT ELECTRICIAL ITS MANUEL-ELECTRIAL WHAT EVER THEY HECK THAT MEANS. SO I WAS STUFF PAYING FOR SOMETHING I SHOULD OF NOT HAD TO. IT WAS MY DOOR LATCH GOT FIXED AND I WAS ALSO AT THAT TIME RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RENTAL TOO THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE COVED UNDER MY STANDARD WARRENTY BUT WASNT SINCE THE PART WASNT.

Door latch light stays on even though the door is fully closed. Other than the beeping every time I come to a stop, the biggest problem is that it keeps my dome light on overnight which is really draining on the car battery.

when I close my door the light comes on saying "door not closed" you can close it 20 times and it will say the same thing. It has run down my battery at times. Sometimes it comes open while I am driving it. Sometimes just the light (as well as dome lights ) come on . I see it was not deemed a safety issue. Well , when you spend that much on a vehicle who wants to put up with that annoying light. It beeps additionally every stop while the car is running . Eventually it will go out but the "put car in park and close door" with the beep is extremely annoying. I wish these people who made it and tested it for safety had the same issue. I bet it would be fixed then. Ford wants to charge appx 500.00 to fix their problem

Last year we had a door ajar light issue with the front driver side door. No matter how many times you shut the door it would still say it's not closed. Keeping the light inside the on til you start driving and comes on again when you're at a stop and go. Very annoying especially at night then it becomes a real problem cause now you can't see due to the reflection from the light on the windshield.

We took it in to Ford and they cleaned it by putting it on a machine that sends voltage to the sensor. A year later it's doing it again but this time it's the same front and back drivers side door. We can't lock the doors while driving because of this issue. I'm afraid we would accidentally forget to set the child lock and one of the kids would open the door while driving. This needs to be a recall. Ford recognizes the issue and all they can say is bring it in and we will charge you over and over again. It's a scam.

Passenger door ajar light comes on--and stays on. Tried slamming door, turning off car and starting again. Sometimes these work--but not all the time. Dome lights stay on because it "thinks" the door is still open. You can hit the "ok" Button and it may go off, not always. Frustrated.

The problem is a safety issue. If you have kids they can open the doors while the car is moving. You can't lock the doors! Also if it is dark the interior lights come on disturbing your night vision. If Ford does not fix this there WILL not be a 5th new Ford in my driveway. What happened to quality first? The Edge is junk. Worst car I have ever owned.

The door latch sensor stopped working so vehicle was constantly giving me the "door ajar" message and the interior lights would not shut off (even after a long wait period). This made it impossible to use the car, since if it sat for any length of time it drained the battery. As a woman, I do not need to have to worry about having a dead car battery when I'm somewhere alone at night.

They have issued recalls for several other Ford models for this and other door latch problems., Why not the Edge?

I'm in the army and work in an office that makes it hard to go out to my vehicle to retrieve the VIN. Will do this at a later date. My wife complained that the door ajar light was coming on for the left rear door of the car. I noticed this was intermittent, but this past weekend, the interior lights stayed on and drained the battery. This has already cost us a new battery, and now that the vehicle is out of warranty by 3 months, will cost even more money to fix the problem. Not happy with the build of this vehicle that we paid over $30k for brand new.

I was able to close the door and have the light turn off for now. We just cannot use that door until it is fixed, or drain another battery. I'm a die-hard Ford fan, having owned 4 Ford vehicles in my lifetime. My family is too. These problems are going to cause me to possibly go with another manufacturer for my wife's next vehicle.

I'll find out more when I take it to the dealer to have the part assessed. Not the first Door Ajar light problem on this car.

This problem happened first with the drivers door which ford fixed. However, it has now happened again with the left rear door and I guess I willl have to give up the vehicle for 1/2 to 1 day to get it repaired. Really should fix all doors since it appears that the problem is moving from door to door.

I took it to the dealer and they said that they cycled the latch and that is was all fixed. abut a month later it was doing it again but now the dealer tells me that I would have to pay for the latch repair and that there would be no help from Ford. I would pay for the full repair even though it was bad while still under warranty, but once out of warranty I now have to pay out of pocket to replace, it should have been replaced when I complained about it while it was under warranty

I have a ford Edge. There is a warning on the front panel that now is on, continuously indicating that the left rear door is ajar, The interior above lights stay on 2-3 minutes. Initially, I would open and then close the door and this would be a temporary fix. However, nothing changes now. Frustrated and annoyed, I brought the car into a Ford a dealership and after explaining the problem ,I was told that there would be a $125.00 diagnosis fee plus tax plus cost of any material used. I was also informed that this was not a common problem and the issue needed to be evaluated. I was called by the service dept. and told that the problem was "the latch " and that the solution would be to replace the latch for $420 plus tax etc. I declined and later did some online investigation that indicated a not so uncommon problem. It seems that Ford has been aware of this problem in other models and has been described over the past 4 years.

It also seems that Ford does not recognize the problem being frequent enough or significant enough to consider the issue a"recall status ". This whole experience thus far is getting to the unreasonable and ridiculous level.

I feel certain that the service man knew what the problem was from the beginning and that I did not need to incur the cost for a diagnosis. I think Ford knows that there is a flaw in manufacturing and there is avoidance of responsibility occurring. The door is not ajar!!! There should be a recall ! There have been reports concerning "safety". Ford has recognized and recalled other models for the same issue. My advice to others ( at this time) would be to not consider purchasing a Ford Edge --or any Ford product. It is time for Ford to stop playing games and do what is right for the customer.

The problem with my door ajar light coming on was horrible!!! It took me 3-10 times closing my door EVERY time I closed it to turn the light off. It would keep telling me to put my car in park and close door when it was already closed. Brought vehicle to local Ford dealer and the cost was over $400 to fix!!! What a waste of money...this should have been a recall for this vehicle. The car is only 4 years old and I'm the only owner. No reason for this to be an issue at all. Maybe if car was older, but four years? Ridiculous! FORD.....do a recall and save some people from shelling out this high cost for your mistake!

When the light first started coming on, I assumed there was moisture in the door latch after a car wash and I live in a cold climate. The problem occurred about once per week and the light would go off if I opened/closed the door 1-2 times. Beginning about a week ago, the door ajar light would come on daily and it would go off if I slammed the door multiple times. For the past two days, every single time I get into my car, the door ajar light comes on and the only way I can get it to turn off is to open/close my door, turn off my car and restart it. The past 3 times I got into my car, the light did not immediately turn on but turned on after I began driving down the road, after driving 1/2 mile even. When this happened, all interior lights in the car came on as well as an alarm warning me the door was ajar and the car cued to me "shift to park". I pulled over to restart car and the light went off. I will be taking my vehicle to get this repaired so that is why my review currently does not list a cost to fix. This is a HUGE safety concern now that I know the door ajar light does not always immediately come on and that this could happen when I'm driving down the highway. Ford needs to recall this!
