I was on vacation when I could not re-start my van. After disconnecting battery cables for a few minutes to allow for any electrical devise to reset it would eventually start. Drove it back to home town and once home same problems recurred. I had to have it towed to a local shop. 3 weeks later It was diagnosed as a TIPM module and I was quoted $1,400 repair. I called local dodge dealer and I was told to pay it then once a recall is issued or if it even gets issued I would be able to apply for a reimbursement.

I checked the web sites and found this to be a known problem. This really pissed me off. Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep know this is a problem to their customers and their response has been non existent. I am currently making the calls to corporate looking for help. Thank God I am not holding my breath!

The TIPM does not throw an error code, so it can be hidden in other error codes.

Update from Sep 5, 2015: Another issue I have had is the fuel pump ran continously, until the battery was dead. When the battery was charged could not duplicate the problem.

Replaced battery, replaced fuel pump and filter, replaced fuel pump relay to the tune of 1000, just to find out it was the tipm, which is another $1000 to replace. And Chrysler has done nothing for the Grand Caravan to fix this problem, only has issued recalls for the same year Jeep and ram.

On July 27 my van would not start. Took it into Dodge and they replaced the battery. Drove it home. 2 days later the car would not start again. Had to have it towed into Dodge where they told me that I needed to drive it more to keep it charged??? Really? They did a computer diagnostics and could not find anything. Considered new starter but "recharged" the battery instead.

Then it happened again. Had car towed in and it is still there (its been 19 days). They swear they don't know what the problem is and "they are starting and driving my car short trips waiting for it fail so they get the diagnostics on it and see what code trips"......telling me that they can't get it to "fail". Picking it up today. will add more when it "fails" on me.

Chrysler acts like they don't care at all. KNOWING that there are MANY of their vehicles out there having this problem, why are they not acting upon it. I noticed that this site showed several complaints about this very same thing, so its good to know I am not alone, but more than OBVIOUS that there is a SERIOUS problem that Chrysler needs to take responsibility and ownership.

Car won't start or do anything. Wait a bit, close or open different things (radio, lights, etc) and finally starts. I don't know if it is related but I also had problems with ventilation system (air would stay warm on one side although it was on cold or vice-versa)?

As of 8/20/15 my vehicle will not start. Has been doing this on and off for like a week now. Today 8/20/15 it will not start. Tried multiple attempts and all it would do is spin over. My kids had to miss school and my wife had to miss work. We have no extra vehicle and don't have the extra cash to get it repaired. If Chrysler knows something is wrong then they need to fix it.

We are having an intermittent problem starting the vehicle. I happens about once a week, where you turn the key and nothing happens. Then you try different things, like waiting, adjusting the key, turning it faster or slower. It has the TIPM issue that I have read about.

Van won't start. Changed batteries in key fob. Still won't start. Kept trying until finally started. Problem intermittent so difficult to duplicate. Finally would start using remote start. Then even that stopped working. Both key fob's are the same problem. Now key fob is stuck in the van and can;t get it out and it won't start. Ready to pull out my hair since this problem happened while my wife was out of town in it about 3 hours from home. Last time I will buy a Dodge.

Update from Aug 31, 2015: Our vehicle has been in the shop now for almost a full month. The dealer service center can not figure out what is wrong. We replaced the ignition module (dealer) and got vehicle back for one week. Same problems continued. Back in shop with no repair date in sight. Vehicle would start, then if you kill it and try to crank it back acted like battery was dead. Could jump it off and then It might crank and then it might not. So far the dealership in College Station Texas can not give me an answer as to what is wrong. Almost $800 dollars to fix ignition module and still making payments on a vehicle I can not drive. Come on Chrysler it's time to step up to the plate and fix the problem. I have talked with other owners of Dodge Grand Caravan and several are having the same problem as well.

Update from Oct 20, 2015: Got our Van back 10/16/15. Thought all was well. Saturday 10/16/15....same problem again. Spoke with service tech at Lithia Dodge in Bryan/College Station Texas. Was told " they had no problems starting the vehicle every day". Don't believe it for a minute. They still won't admit that the original problem was the TIPM module to begin with and told me that it would cost $1200 or so to fix. Already spent $800 on WIN module which was probably not the problem to begin with. To top things off, we had 2 key fobs with our original Win module (when van was purchased). We were told that an extra key fob would cost $200. The last Dodge I ever purchase will be the current vehicle I have a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan. I contacted Chrysler Motors directly and was told there was nothing they could do to help me.

Chrysler claims they have never heard of TIPM failure in this vehicle, it is all over internet. This failure results in the engine stopping can result in loss of control. This is a wheelchair van. Offered to pay for replacement part, not for the labor to replace. This is a safety issue and should be their responsibility. This vehicle cost over $40,000. Don't buy a Dodge!

I was driving approximately 30 mph and the vehicle just shut down, the powering steering went out and the engine stalled, which we later found out was due to the faulty TIPM. We had also been having a few issues with the fuel pump.....the fuel pump was not shutting off and all lead to problems with being able to start the vehicle sometimes it took several attempts to even get it started.

First the Battery indicator came on while driving. Went off after stopping but came on again after driving a short while. Then the radio would turn off and then on again. The next day it would not start but would start after a jump. Did not move it from driveway. Then the check engine light came on and it stalled. Still did not move it. Started with a jump but stalled after a few minutes. More indicator lights are now lit. Started again with many more indicators lit but it will not go into gear. Stalled. Stuck in driveway. Waiting for a tow to garage.

Update from Apr 30, 2015: Brought it to the dealer who found a dead cell in the battery and changed it. It seemed to work fine but within a few kilometres the battery light came on again so I brought it back to the dealer. Upon testing the alternator was found to be only charging intermittently. The part was ordered and installed. The dealer was able to get the alternator replaced under the just-expired warranty as a goodwill gesture to enhance customer satisfaction. I was very impressed and grateful as it saved me several hundred dollars. The Coquitlam Chrysler dealership treated me very well on this occasion and I felt it only fair to change this complaint to an accolade.

OUT OF THE BLUE, THE CAR WOULD NOT START OR WOULD START INTERMITTENTLY. AT TIMES IT JUST STOPPED RUNNING WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. PRETTY DANGEROUS.

APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THOUGH CHRYSLER HAS YET TO INCLUDE THE 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN IN THE MODELS THEY HAVE RECALLED. $1086 IS A LOT OF MONEY FOR SOMETHING THEY KNOW IS DEFECTIVE AND HAVE KNOWN FOR SOMETIME.

Grand Caravan LX 3.6L

We were on a trip and it failed to start. After numerous attempts to try to start it, we put fuel in the air intake and the car started. We ran it back home without turning it off, afraid that we would be stranded on the road. We made an appointment with the dealership and they said that if there were no readable codes or check engine lights, then they couldn't tell me what was wrong with it and suggested that I run it until it stopped. It has been parked in the garage, because my wife is afraid to drive it because of her safety. We have tried starting it on numerous occasions and it is a major problem.

I called in an independent mechanic and he said it was the Tipm and should be replaced at a cost of about $1200. I did complaint research and found thousands of people with the same problem and feel that Dodge should responsible for a vehicle with so few miles. It has become an expensive storage shed, since we can't drive it.

I was on the highway and without warning, the car just stopped! 10 minutes later started again then stopped again...i was stuck in the middle of the road blocking traffic. We had it towed to the nearest dodge retailer who said it was a TIPM problem...evaluated the cost of replacement and installment was $1200.

We don't have that money right now so we successfully got the car back in our driveway...since then, it has not started.

with a family of four kids, its a pain.

Van wouldn't start. I had it towed and diagnosed as a bad TIPM. I was told that the part was on a national backorder. I was without a running van for over 3 months. I finally called the customer service number for Dodge. After 7 calls to them, they finally assigned me to a parts case manager. Within 10 business days the dealer had a part. The van was then fixed and I was handed a $800.44 bill for the repair (that didn't even include the bill for diagnosis). Dodge states that this part is not covered under any warranties.

My Dodge Caravan won't start and I already had the fuel pump replaced. Many customers of Dodge are having the same problem and there is a lawsuit in progress over this issue. Dodge has not yet issued a recall but if several customers are having this problem they need to be responsible for the repairs. Right now, vehicle cannot be driven and I am still paying on it.

Bought Dodge Grand Caravan from a Dodge dealer November 2014. It was a used 2011 and silly me, the dealer had started the van and we drove it in test drive, bought it and drove it off the lot. From the next day, when we went to use the van we had problems starting. Worked with it and we were able to nurse it along until I started looking up the problem on the internet.

Suggestions with starting problems ranged from TIPM, to fuel pump to spark plugs. I called a local Dodge dealer about the TIPM problem and they said no, it did not apply to my VIN and that would not be the problem. I took the van to a trusted professional auto mechanic they said the fuel pump was bad and changed it out at a cost of over $600. Next day it wouldn't start again. The auto mechanic towed it back and in the process found it is the TIPM causing the fuel pump failures.

Don't know what the price will be to repair yet. If Dodge charges for the TIPM. I will definitely add my name to the class action lawsuit that has been filed against Chrysler.

Horrible vehicle, horrible company. They need to recall, fix every damn faulty TIPM they installed. This has put my family in a financial crisis. Had to replace the fuel pump because it was burnt out by the TIPM. The van has been sitting in the driveway for over a month because it's unsafe to drive with my family. My wife and two toddlers are stranded at home when I'm at work. It has put unnecessary wear and tear on our only working vehicle.

Grand Caravan

  • Automatic transmission
  • 74,000 miles

In November 2014, I began having intermittent issues with my 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan either not starting, or starting then immediately cutting off. These issues became more frequent, with the van taking 3-5 tries to start. Unfortunately, it didn't happen every time, which made it tough to diagnose the issue.

At the beginning of January it became a regular occurrence, so I was able to have the van looked at and the problem diagnosed. The Dodge dealership checked out my car today and informed me that it will require the TIPM to be replaced and will cost over $1000. As I had not heard of the TIPM before, I looked online and see that this is a common issue and recalls have been issued for other vehicles but not for the Dodge Grand Caravan. This is an incredibly expensive repair, and based on my research today I can't understand why there has not been a recall for this.

My car is held hostage, un-driveable, at the dealer while they look for the repair part. It is obvious that they are making a lot of these repairs. This is a safety issue that should definitely be a recall but the recall has not been issued.
