When my truck was under factory warranty it had a ratcheting clunking noise coming from the rack and pinion. The truck had 89000 on it and I called Chevrolet filed a complaint. I was driving last summer and I lost my steering going down the road then I got it back. Then I took it in for the software update recall. The Chevrolet garage told me that the rack and pinion is not covered under factory warranty. Now the truck has 109000 and the rack is binding worse. I did my research and found out their is alot of people with the same problem I'm having. These racks need to be recalled before someone gets hurt.
Vehicle was in motion moving straight forward at a very slow speed (inching out of car wash during drying cycle). Dash service indicator came on "service power steering drive with care". lost power steering almost instantaneously as dash service warning appeared. Was able to pull out of gas station with no power steering and pulled to side of road, turned off truck. Checked under the hood to see if any noticeable loose connections (none). Wiggled fuses in fuse box under hood. Restarted vehicle and dash "service" indicator flashed on but power steering worked for 2 corners (200 yards) while driving 25 mph and failed with same service warning. Limped truck with no power steering to dealer about 3 miles. No noticeable affect to accelerator or other electronics in the vehicle. Vehicle has 39,400 miles on it.
At low speeds of 15mph or less, when brakes are applied, the vehicles brake assist stops working and the electric to the car flashes off. If speeds are low enough and you apply brakes while turning right at a light or stop sign, the vehicle will shutoff and steering wheel locks. This is a huge safety issue and poor design.
Trucks shakes and vibrates at speeds over 65mph. Shakes are so bad it feels as though the wheels are coming loose. Tired have been rebalanced. Replaced. New rims. No solution.

The rack and pinion is making noise while turning the steering wheel. It is my understanding that due to the electronic power steering assist if it fails the steering will no longer work. I have seen many complaints about this same issue for these year model trucks and my truck only had approximately 40,000 miles. This part seems to have a high failure rate and is relatively expensive especially if it fails multiple times which I have read happens.
