This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
My 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins pick-up truck started displaying symptoms of a bad HCU module several months ago, "Service Electronic Braking System" warning message, ABS dash light indicating loss of ABS, and Traction Control Light indicating loss of traction control, as well as kicking the vehicle out of Cruise Control when this set of condition lights are, albeit intermittently illuminated. There are times where these condition light persist for long periods of time from several hours to several days, and then times when these condition lights aren't present and will only intermittently come on and then times when these lights blink/ding on and off constantly for several minutes until it comes to rest in an always on state or an intermittent state. After having the issue confirmed by a third-party reputable mechanic shop AND a RAM Dealership Service department I was told the module is on backorder. Being that it is a safety system I don't trust the "aftermarket parts industry" to provide me with authentic manufacturer trusted equipment. Which leaves me encumbered with the stress and risk of having to operate my vehicle with unreliable ABS, Traction Control, Cruise Control. This is beyond a unique to me issue as there are plenty of well documented cases of RAM 2500-3500 series vehicle with this issue as well as a recall on the 2019 & up series of the same. So why would they not issue the recall for the other trucks with this safety issue? Condition persists at any speed regardless of road and weather conditions, no matter the duration of vehicle operation per trip.
My 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins Mega Cab pick-up truck started displaying symptoms of a bad HCU module several months ago, "Service Electronic Braking System" warning message, ABS dash light indicating loss of ABS, and Traction Control Light indicating loss of traction control, as well as kicking the vehicle out of Cruise Control when this set of condition lights are, albeit intermittently illuminated. Service antilock braking system and service electric braking system constantly flashes off and on as if there is a short and all I can do apparently (according to the dealer) is replace the module which is Astronomically priced! Apparently there are a lot of people having this issue. As far as the steering it has been loose since the beginning as there is 2?" of play and everyone blames the steering box but I have invested way to much chasing the problem with no luck.
ABS Module failed. Lost abs function. Lost traction control and cruise control i also got 2 warning lights in the dash for ABS and traction control. Was confirmed by genes Chrysler Ram of fairbanks AK. First appeared July 24th 2023
HCU failure causing abs faults and traction control faults. Part required is not available and dealerships Say this is an ongoing issue with these trucks.
72,000 miles on vehicle. Received error messages - service electronic brake system and service abs brake system. The error is intermittent and causes loss of ABS functionality and a potential safety hazard. The repair is to replace the ABS system Module (68437098AB) and the ABS Modulator (68143491AA). This is not a small repair. From reading on the internet, this is component defect and a reoccurring problem on these vehicles, and the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge this as a problem. I am recommending that the NHTSA consider this as a recall.
Intermittent alert to "Service Electronic Braking System" and "Service ABS System". Will cycle on and off multiple times in a row 3-4 times per minute. Sometimes will go 30 minutes without alert or will stay illuminated. Research of RAM TSB S2005000004 suggests failure of ABS Hydraulic Control Unit and/or ABS Control Module. Commonly reported issue. When illuminated, cruise control does not work. It appears that anti-spin and stability control are inactive.
While driving down the road my vehicles ABS and Traction control light go on and off, most of the time the lights are stuck on. Causing the vehicle to not have ABS and traction control during the rain and snow months of the year an further more the cruise control does not work. At this point the truck is unsafe to drive in all conditions as it does not retain its safety braking systems, I will not put my family in the vehicle. Moving forward ask my local Ram dealer about the repairs and they say they can not get the parts they have been on back order.
First got an Service Antilock Brake System and Stability Control light. A couple days later, lost speedometer and park sense lights came on along with "Service Trailer Brakes", but I haven't had a trailer hooked up to this truck ever.
I have replaced my right rear ABS wheel speed sensor 2 times and still having issues. Cruise control or 4x4 does not work when abs light is on and with 4x4 not working it can leave you stranded if 4x4 is needed
ABS control module and hydraulic control unit failing. Replaced components in 2021 and 2022 and failing again in 2023. This is a serious safety issue because if these units fail then it causes loss of antilock braking and speed control
ABS warning light is on. Vehicle taken to dealer for the issue 10-OCT-2022. Dealer confirmed that the hydraulic control unit had failed. Dealer stated part was on backorder until December 2022. Part did not come in. Dealer stated in May 2023 that part was still on backorder and that Ram was aware of the issue and had it under engineering review. (part number 68143491AB)
Turn on the truck and the ABS/Traction Control lights are off, drive the truck, and with no consistency, the ABS and traction control come on and off. It does not matter if it is raining/wet or sunny, around a turn or straight the lights turn on and off on their whim. When the lights are on the truck has different braking characteristics than when the lights are off. The truck stops in a longer time frame and the brakes seem as if they have less braking power or are soft compared to them when the lights are off.
My truck has intermittently had an abs issue which was uncommon. Now the problem is persistent no abs no traction control it seems my rear brakes are not working at all. I read many articles of the same issue.... and what's worse is it seems they discontinued the part. Currently I am unable to fix the problem without parts. I can't afford another vehicle or I would just trade it in and take the loss. Ram isn't providing any real solutions.
The ABS module in our 2500 Cummins has been serviced multiple times since purchasing and is still throwing service codes. We have a child and need to be sure that this module is working properly. We know this module has been recalled in the 2019-2022 models.
While driving the light and warning signal for the ABS Brakes and Traction Control go on and off intermittently. Another indicator comes on that says the ABS brakes need servicing. This can happen at almost anytime. If on the highway with cruise control on and the lights come on the cruise drops out and the vehicle slows quickly, hopefully no one has run into the back of the truck, because it happened at 65 mph on Monday. I had the codes checked and it says the pump motor for the ABS is at fault, stored code DTC C0020-01. The ABS pump assembly had to be ordered on March 10, 2020 and was replaced under warranty once already on March 25, 2020, 16015 miles for the same thing, and the part had to be ordered. The vehicle now has 20360 miles on it and it is my understanding that the part is on backorder for quite some time. There must be a problem with the part or they would be in stock at least so it can be ordered. This is a safety concern of mine being the brakes may not work properly and when it shuts off at highway speed with the cruise on, there could be an accident due to the vehicle slowing fairly quick. I would like to be able to drive the truck safely. This truck is unsafe to drive now and it is not covered by warranty. Needs to be a recall, manufacturer needs to look into this situation and fix it.
