This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
I continually get the ABS warning light lilting up on my dashboard screen along with a sway control light. The obvious risk is the failure of the braking system especially on hard braking situations or slippery roads. This risks injury and/or death to myself and any passengers as well as vehicles traveling in my vicinity. This is a well known problem with dealers as well as many owners. The same issue has been identified in newer versions of the same vehicle and been recalled. The issue has been identified as a malfunction with the hydraulic brake control unit and the anti-lock brake system module. This is a problem already known to the manufacturer and is also the subject of a class action lawsuit in California. This safety issue should certainly be resolved by the manufacturer by a recall in an expeditious manner.
Pulling loaded livestock trailer on interstate at highway speed (65 mph) using cruise control in 2017 Ram 2500 diesel pickup when experienced rapid deceleration as the result of ABS/HCU failure. This rapid deceleration caused vehicles behind me to skid trying to avoid a rear end collision with my vehicle. Confirmed with Ram dealership that ABS/HCU module had failed causing the cruise control to shutoff and that replacement was necessary. The people in my vehicle, the animals in my trailer and others driving on the highway were all put at risk of serious bodily harm or even death as a result of this unit failure.
Keep getting an intermittent ABS failure / check brake system light, which also turns off the cruise control. Ram says may need replacement of hydraulic control unit, but no parts available.
The service antilock brake system/ service electronic braking system lights began turning on and off intermittently around August of 2022. These would sometimes be prompted or exacerbated by wet driving conditions or bumps, but often just at random while driving. At the beginning of the issue, vehicle had roughly 48,000 miles. After paying for diagnosis, the failed part was deemed to be the ABS pump motor-general electrical failure, code C0020-0 as well as code C006C-9A for stability system component failure. Being RAM dealer-only parts and needing software flashes for installation, this repair costs between $1000 and $2000 USD. This failure leaves these HD trucks without ABS systems (functioning systems are required in many states for vehicle safety inspections). The cherry on top of this situation is the replacement parts are unavailable nation-wide as FCA "switches manufactures". This leaves the ABS inoperable and the trucks completely unsafe with absolutely NO alternative actions. No loaner vehicles offered, no recourse for failing safety inspections, nothing. Many folks use these as business or work trucks, depend on them, and have no choice but to keep driving with the issue as-is. This is a blatant hazard and needs to be corrected as soon as possible.

While driving the trucks ABS and wheel speed sensor warning lights will intermittently alarm. While alarming I do not have ABS or cruise control function.
Service Electronic Brake system and ABS unavailable lights constantly. Brakes locked up while towing a trailer. This apparently is a known problem that Ram refuses to recall. $1500 to $1800 to fix a known faulty part is unreasonable and is going to make people choose to continue to drive with the warning light on because it is too expensive to repair.
The indicator lights for abs and traction control appeared, and the driver information panel stated a problem with the abs electronic control. I am uncertain if this will lead to a failure in the braking of my truck. This problem was repaired twice by a Ram dealer; the most recent being on October 4, 2022. I have learned this is an issue that was recalled on the 2019-2020 models, and there is a class action lawsuit in relation to the 2017-2018 models.
HCU for ABS brake system has now failed for a second time. They can not even supply a part to repair. Now on back order hold til 02/2024. So I have to risk driving with no abs system until then and not certain if it will be extended again. This is a known issue for RAM. They should fix this and put out a recall and reimburse me for time and repairs. I hope no one gets killed for this. Alot of Rams on the road just like me now.
ABS control module failed 3 times in under 39000 miles. First instance was repaired under warranty in 02/2019 with control unit replaced. Second instance was repaired out of warranty in 03/2020. Third instance of failure occurred in 08/2023. Symptom of failure is ABS/TC indicator light repeatedly flashing and warning sound in cabin. The repeated warning makes the vehicle undriveable for any length of time. It is unclear if the ABS is actually functioning as I would not drive in poor traction conditions with this warning. The ABS control module or related wiring in this truck is defective and the repairs implemented by Chrysler/Dodge/RAM do not resolve the problem. Replacing the ABS control unit is a temporary solution as the unit will fail with identical symptoms 1-3 years later.
I have a 2017 RAM 2500. The abs and traction control light are flashing on and off SEVERAL times each trip. It kicks my cruise off and sometimes stays on. The EVIC display showed Service Antilock Braking System and alternated to Service Electronic Brake System. It would constantly bing and display the ABS light and the Traction Control light. seems a recall should be mandatory for replacement of the 68437098AB Module Anti Lock Brake System and the 68143491AA Control Anti Lock Brake System or whatever is causing this issue. it is a safety issue.
Ive had issues where by ABS fails and the problem is a faulty hydraulic control unit and abs module. They are a very common issue with 2017 and 2018 model years on the forums I'm on and theyre backordered from so many people trying to fix the issue repeatedly.
Abs and traction control lights come on and off after hitting bumps or just randomly. Started in the winter and it would disable 4WD which is not acceptable since this is a plow vehicle. Problem has gotten worse over time with the lights coming on and off multiple times per trip. The problem is available for inspection anytime. Without 4wd in snowy conditions(also rainy withour abs) others are in danger. i have had my mechanic look into it, we have not come up with a solution yet. Not inspected by manufacturer. multiple warning lights on a daily basis, failure is intermittent.
I have 2017 Dodge ram 2500.12/09/19 the anti lock brake system control and hcu module was replaced under warranty. Now august 2023 with 27,900 miles the same problem has occurred with the dealer recommending the ABS control module and HCU be replaced. the parts will not be avaiable until January 2024. If a Abs module failure is not serious what is. A check of the internet shows a tremendous amount of complaints of this issue. there is even a class action lawsuit in California. I have spoken with Ram Care and they dropped my case as soon as they found out the part was backordered until January. I have all the dealer documentaion if needed. Please look into this problem before crashes start occuring.
HCU failure causing abs faults and traction control faults, intermittently. Part required is not available and dealerships Say this is an ongoing issue with these trucks. Just hit 50,000 miles on vehicle, changed front brakes, Rotors and pads as well as the front Wheel Speed Sensors.
The truck-??s warning lights indicated failures in the Anti-lock brake system module, HCU module, and cruise control. Truck experience issues such as the loss of anti-lock braking, cruise control, and traction control. These missing features and systems significantly compromise the control and handling of the Ram trucks, particularly in adverse weather conditions like wet or snowy roads, where braking becomes more challenging. Replaced the HCU and Mod once 8-1-2022 already and within 10k miles it has failed again.
While towing with my 2017 RAM 2500 the "Service electronic braking system" and "Service antilock braking system" began to intermittently flash on my gauge cluster/instrument panel. The message and lights would continually flash on and off while driving over various road conditions (rough, smooth, flat, inclines, declines). My families safety (myself, wife and son) was at risk with the potential for a brake or braking system failure while towing our travel trailer, as well as the safety of others on the road around us in the event of our braking system failing. I began doing research on this error message and found the NHTSA investigation and link to report the issue. I am going to speak to my local dealer today 8/24/23 regarding repairs.
