NHTSA — Steering Problems

2009 Pontiac G6 (Page 10 of 15)

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 is starting to have the same problems as previous model years, including the headlights blowing out due to bad connectors.

The wiring harness connections aren't a big deal to replace, as long as your dealer or mechanic doesn't charge you an arm & a leg to "diagnose" the problem.

I was turning into a convenient store parking lot to park and where the hood is caught on fire. I had to jump out immediately and a local grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. It then had to be towed to an automotive shop where I was told the power steering pressure line had a hole burn into it, the power steering pump was out and the rack and pinion needed replacement because the power steering was stiff.

I purchased car new in 2009 and have had problem after problem starting with exhaust system just weeks after I got it. It has had 3 recalls but I more are due. The headlights started going one after another and at one time all front lights were out at the same time. I had them repaired with new connector. Currently, the left headlight is out again and a new headlamp and another connector was installed and still will not stay on. Other owners I have spoken with have the same problems that I am having. But what can we do? I've been experiencing power steering going out occasionally for no apparent reason what so ever. There is a recall but my car is not covered under the recall although there were 2009 models that were. I was told my VIN number wasn't included in the recall. The air bag alert stays on. I had it diagnosed along with the seat belt alert and both need to be replaced. The seat belt sensor module needs to be replaced in the passenger seat. My rear door locks don't work and that's electrical problem. I feel the car manufacturer knew these problems existed and should be held accountable for selling these death traps. With all these serious problems, I can't grasp why GM don't take responsibility for all this and get them off the rode. I and other motorists are not safe while I'm still driving this car. Do the right thing GM and recall all 2009 Pontiac G6 and make them safe.

Once the vehicle was powered back on, the power steering warning indicator was not illuminated and the steering wheel performed normally; however, the failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the power steering sensor needed to be adjusted. The sensor was adjusted, however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 112,000.

I purchased a Pontiac G6 in September 2014. Since October 2014, the car has been pulling to the left and right, and the steering wheel has not been correcting itself to the normal postion. I have taken the car to the dealer 3 times and complained about this, and I have taken the car to other multiple places and they have not came to a conclusion. I got an alignment done and that has not corrected the issue. When I am going around a right turn the car catches and I manually need to turn the wheel. Going around a left turn it does the same thing. There is no code for the power steering.

Lights on the car starting coming on the air bag lights stay on now and will not go off.the heater in the seats also stopped working.and now when I turn the steering wheels there is a grinding sound.I thought it was the cv axles replaced, and it did no good.it continues to make the grinding sounds when I turn, and its hard to turn the steering wheel at times it locks up.the electric systems seems to act strange with lights blinking on the dash board sometimes.many times I have trouble starting the car and have had the starter checked out and they cannot find a problem, when it does this all the lights start flashing.once I was driving in the mountains at a speed around 45 miles an hour and my car completely cut off on top of the mountains.

At low speed the electric power steering assist failed causing hard feedback to the steering wheel. When the system reengaged the car suddenly jolted in the direction of the turn. The defect has repeated on four occasions. Took the vehicle to the dealer and paid for diagnosis and was informed that no errors were found and that this vehicle is not included in the current recall for similar issues in past vehicle models. Decided to replace steering torque sensor at own expense since this is a significant safety issue.

The power steering light came on and the power steering went out. I looked up and found that there was a recall on the power steering so I entered my VIN number but my VIN number wasn't included in the recall yet the problem with my car is the exact problem the recall was done for. Now my car is in the shop and I will have to pay for the repair out of pocket.

Luckily, the car wasn't damaged besides a scratch to the side and dented rim, but only because I was going slowly. The power steering suddenly stopped working. While I was attempting to drive it to the dealer to be looked at it, the power steering tried to come back on, surged, and caused my car to swerve off of the road. It was extremely dangerous. Pontiac/GM has not taken responsibility for it so far, even though other cars of the exact same make, model, and year have the exact same problem. If I had been going any faster, I could have been seriously hurt.

Nov 012013

G6 4-cyl

  • 120,000 miles
This initially occurred in November of 2013. Mileage is estimated at 120000 miles at the time. One day while driving a message came on the dash that said power steering. Although I was able to drive to my destination the force required to turn the wheel while the power assist is failing is massive. I am 6 ft tall and 200 pounds, and I have a difficult time making a turn or sharp curve when this happens. I took the car to the dealership and paid $700 or more to have it fixed. 14 months later the same thing began to happen again and the steering wheel will twitch at idle. However the car stopped having the power steering failing all the time until 3/10/2015. With 167000 miles now on the car the replaced power steering is failing with regular frequency, every time I drive the power steering message is displayed and I have no assist. If anything the steering system fights you to prevent turning. Also it seems as if the steering pinion jumps off a tooth when turning at a stop I hear a strange pinging noise and then the car pulls to whatever direction I turned to at the stop until I stop and turn back the opposite direction. All in all the original power steering module and the one I paid to replace the original one have both failed miserably and are a real danger on the roads. If I have a difficult time with the force required to turn the wheel when the steering fails I can't imagine what someone smaller than me will do if this happens.
