I purchased my used 2008 Pontiac G6 in November 2008 with 12,576 miles on it. I don't use the car much and just reached 26,500 miles on 01/16/13. Since mid-December 2012 I began to hear and feel a clicking/clunking when turning the steering wheel while driving. At times the steering wheel also felt stiffer. Yesterday I took the car to the GM dealer/repair shop where I bought it and had to have my intermediate steering shaft replaced at a total cost of $416.04. I've now read many complaints on the internet about this being a common problem on 2008 Pontiac G6S and GM cars in general. I'm now very concerned that the problem will recur in the future. Please note that this is my 3rd Pontiac and my first one (a Pontiac 6000) had problems with the rack and pinion and became almost impossible to turn the wheel. Very dangerous!

There are a multitude of complaints on steering for this model, it would appear that these cars loose steering and can go out of control. My 2008 G6 Pontiac is having problems with its steering wheel. Its like it has a mind of its own, it shakes out of control while driving, my wheel is hard to turn and sometimes jerks. Can you tell me if they have a recall on the power steering for the 2008 model? this is a safety issue because of all cars on the road

Intermediate steering shaft replaced due to "clunking" noise. Pervasive problem with GM vehicles, check the internet. First failure was at 20000 miles. (I also have a 2006 G6 and that too had the intermediate steering shaft replaced this last summer at 35000 miles. Pervasive problem for GM. Why is NHTSA not requiring a recall and proper fix?

The contact owns a 2008 Pontiac G6. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the steering wheel became extremely difficult to maneuver. The power steering warning chime began to sound as the radio screen displayed a power steering warning message. The contact placed the vehicle in park and shut the engine off. After restarting the vehicle, the power steering assist function became operable. The failure recurred twice. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 86,360.

I purchased this car less than a year ago from a well known dealership. And the car is in good condition. I am having some problems with the steering though I checked to see if there was a recall but nothing has come up. I was on my way home from work late one nite when I got onto the freeway I was able to get up to speed of about 60 when all of a sudden my steering wheel just rips out of my hand it scared me half to death because I was afraid I was going to wreck. I don't know what the problem is it has done it a few times since but this is my only means of transportation so I think GM needs to look into this issue. This is not a safe car and I will never own another GM after. I just really hope someone figures out why it is doing this. There is no noises when I turn I have had people look into it but noone can see anything wrong so please can this issue be fixed.

When you pull up to a stop sign the steering wheel will move back and forth in your hands. (vibrates) then when you are driving it feels like you are driving a car without power steering. To the point that when you steer it feels like you may over steer and end up in the ditch or the other lane of traffic. There is a good utube video that simulates what the steering wheel does.

In 2010 the steering on my 2008 Pontiac G-6 was grinding, and the wheel was difficult to turn. I brought it in for service and the intermediate steering shaft was replaced. Now 2 years later, it is doing it again. I brought it into the dealership and was told they could find nothing. The steering is grinding, it is difficult to turn and the steering shakes at 60 miles per hour. It is unsafe and it needs to be looked into. I have noticed numerous complaints about the steering on the Pontiac G-6's and yet there is no recall. I did find a 2008 Pontiac G6 steering service bulletin 288506, but when I called the company they stated it did not apply to my car. Some one is going to be seriously hurt if nothing is done about the steering issues in the Pontiac G-6's. I would appreciate it if you look into it.

The contact owns a 2008 Pontiac G6. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph the steering wheel began to bounce up and down which made it difficult to maintain control of the vehicle. Also, the contact mentioned that she heard a very loud clicking noise inside the steering column whenever turning left or right. Both of the failures recurred numerous times and each time the noises got louder. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified but they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 56,000 and the current mileage was 85,000.

Around July of 2012, approximately 1 year after I purchased a GM certified used Pontiac G6 I noticed the steering wheel started popping while turning. As the time progressed the popping became louder. I have done research on the problem and believe it to be the intermediate steering shaft. This will have to be replaced as it can be dangerous if the steering wheel locks up.

I just bought this car from a well know dealership, the car is in excellent condition, expect the steering wheel makes a clicking sound. Everytime I turn to the right it clicks like something is falling apart. This car should be recall from GM since apparently is a common problem with all Pontiac vehicles. The wheel at any poing can lock itself.

The steering wheel continues to lock up and risk my life. I had it fixed by the dealer ([xxx]) and it still does it! I almost was hit by a semi the last time so I took it back to the dealer and they won't do anything. Now they are saying the steering shaft needs to be replaced. No matter how much everything gets fixed the problem continues. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

I purchased my Pontiac brand new with 189 miles. Shortly after while driving my car, I noticed a squeaking noise from the brakes. I had the brakes checked out and they were fine. Was told it was due to dirt in the brakes. In 2011 my indicator light came on telling me to check my fuel cap. I took it to the mechanic, and ended up paying to have something in the fuel system changed. I am still encountering issues with the indicator light to check the fuel cap. The gas mileage is terrible! I have complained to the dealership about this issue and was told that it was due to it being winter. I then waited until summer and still am experiencing fuel issues. A major issue in which I have noted that hundreds of other Pontiac owners are having is with the steering. My steering is making terrible clanking noises. I am afraid that something is going to break on my car. I am self employed and take clients on errands/dr appointments and rely on my car to get us there safely. I will be taking my car to the dealership to complain of this issue. I also will be complaining of severe rust issues on my car. My window also leaked water. My door was improperly aligned. Water leaked into the door of my car and did not release causing water to stay in my door. I truly believe with all of the complaints in regards to the steering that this should be recalled for safety. Not to mention what other problems the steering shaft is causing your vehicle.

In the beginning the whinning noise was only when I made a left or right turn. Now whenever I move the steering wheel to the left or right it makes a loud piercing whinning noise like rubber or somthing is about to snap. It is even louder than it was a year ago. It can't be safe to drive. The dealership stated GM had the same problem with the arcadias, but GM has decided to pay for the fix on that vehicle but not design the part to fix the Pontiac G6. They stated that part would not fit my G6. They also stated because G6S are no longer being made, they have no reason to fit the problem. I have seen many complaints about a similar problem. If they know how to fit it on the arcadia's, then they should be fixing it for free on the Pontiac G6S. I think this is such bad customer service and feel they will be losing many customers who have supported GM over the years. Honestly, I feel very uncomfortable driving the car with this noise, because I feel the more I drive, the worse it gets, until the point something in that steering will snap and I lose control of the vehicle. Please help get this issue resolved.

My car has developed a popping noise whenever I break or turn the steering wheel to far to the left or to the right. I have done some research and it looks as though alot of 2008 Pontiac G6 owners have similar problems.it might have something to do with the rack and pinion steering or the intermediate steering shaft. I am concerned the steering might give out while driving. Is there going to be a recall by GM for this?
