CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima has widespread transmission problems. It starts with the vehicle jerking when shifting, & progresses to full-blown transmission failure.

Maxima owners report spending $3,000 to replace the transmission, typically around when the odometer hits 100,000 miles.

There's a class action lawsuit filed in late 2011, & it is still in the "discovery" stage. Apparently, these things take time ... far too much time.

This problem is scary. It feels as if the whole engine is bucking. I'm taking my car to the dealer this week. I have an extended warranty, so if anything is wrong I hope it is covered. My complaint matches the other eleven exactly. Nissan should own up to this problem.

Can't understand, that with as many complaints concerning this transmission problem, why Nissan can't take ownership of the problem and fix it. I would suspect that a class action civil suit will be in order; we'll definetly support those efforts. Additionally, Nissan should be aware that because they will not fix this problem, we will not trade in Ford pickup for Nissan pickup as we were about six months from doing when the problems started. We will never recommend and will acutally try to talk future buyers from pruchasing Nissan, nor will we buy another Nissan product again unless Nissan can prove they will take ownership of problems of this nature and correct the curent Maxima transmission problem at no cost to owners.

I was really excited to purchase my 2005 Maxima, but now realize what an horribly expensive mistake I have made. I only wish I had done my research thoroughly before purchasing or had come across this site and read what a terrible car this Nissan is. I would love to know how to go about petitioning Nissan to do a recall and fix these problems. I love my car, but this transmission is going to cause numerous problem if it breaks down entirely and I can't get to my job. Is there a petition out that may make Nissan do the right thing and recall these malfunctioning transmission. I can't believe they are willing to ruin their previous reputable reputation. It should be illegal and have high fines and penalties for selling merchandise that the manufacturer knows is defective. Never another Nissan again

It seems that a lot of people have had the same problem with their Nissan Maxima yrs 04-07 especially. Transmission needs to be replaced. I have found 100's of ppl with same problem. I encourage you to contact NHTSA this wow will call for a recall. www.nhtsa.gov . Please email them if you are experiencing transmission problems. Lets hold Nissan responsible for fixing the problem

Nissans are lasting cars...or at least I thought. 5 years into my purchase, I noticed that the car kept jerking. I had a family mechanic friend look over the issue and he pointed to loose engine mounts. A week after fixing the engine mounts, the jerking issues resurfaced. I'm now noticing that the car jerks violently when going from 1st to 2nd gear and from 2nd to 1st. Now under the impression that there's a transmission issue, I have the same guy flush the transmission with Nissan transmission fluid. A week later, the jerking CONTINUES! I finally take the car to AAMCO (the transmission specialists) and they tell me that one of the valves in the transmission is worn straight through and that it would cost me $2200 to fix. I get a call back from AAMCO the next day informing me that upon further inspection of the transmission, they found that fine metal filaments were found in the valve which most likely was causing it to wear. Unsure of what was causing the metal debris, they recommended opening up the transmission to do a more thorough inspection which would run the price of an entire transmission overhaul..$4000! I felt like someone had stabbed me! I could've fixed just the valve but not locating the cause of the metal debris would potentially lead to another faulty valve sooner or later. Do I pay the $4k and knowing that I had a good transmission to last me a while (and risk something else going wrong) or do I pay the $2200 and sell the car in a few months before the transmission started acting up again? I ended up doing the former since the other car in my 2-car family was going to have to be upgraded to accomodate a baby. That meant the Maxima had to last us a little while. I had contacted Nissan prior to fixing the car to see if there were any recalls to the transmissions on the '05 Maximas and they confirmed there were not. With all of these postings, I can't believe there haven't been!!! 5-year old cars should NOT need a transmission overhaul!! Of course, the manufacturer warranty only covers 3 years/36k miles. I will NEVER buy a Nissan again!

I can't believe that I am also one of several who have to go on line to complain about my car that I thought would not give me this kind of problem. I always wanted a Maxima and boy did I get one!!! At first I thought I was alone and had been unlucky enough to get a lemon but no, come to find out, this is an ongoing problem. I should have done my homework and checked around first but I trusted Nissan. The funny thing is, I worked for Honda building cars but didn't like the style and loved this Maxima, until whenever I would go from park to reverse it started jerking. Then sometimes it felt like the transmission was gearing down whenever I started slowing down. The jerking is so severe that the motor mounts are bad and Nissan says they have to be replaced too. Nissan says the transmission is burned up! Now tell me how so many other cars in the years 2004, 2005, 2006, have the same kind of problem if something was not done right to start with. I feel Nissan is trying to let this slide by because there are probably a lot of others who have not reported this. But where I live , in a small town, at one local transmission shop, there have been five Nissan complaints, that I know of. I am ready to pursue this as far as I can to get results because its' not right to treat customers this way.Nissan wants me to pay $5,500.00 to get my car fixed but I have chose to park it and let Nissan know that I for one am not going to be quiet about this and I am going to pursue this until I find out exactly how the transmissions were made during those three years and if there were any problems because they have to have fact sheets on all their cars. What makes me the maddest is, I really love my car, I just want Nissan to stand behind what they sell!!!!!

Upon reading the complains of people that have a 04 Maxima I see they are having problems with the transmission. But I have a 05 Maxima and I am having the same problem with the transmission jerking. But I started having transmission problems I had a timing chain problem and before I could get that fixed my transmission is messing up. I have friends that have the 04 and 05 Maxima and we are having the same problems the timing chain and the transmission. When I contacted the Nissan place they try to seem unaware of other people is having issues with these things on their cars. They just tell me it is something that goes out on your car and it needs to be fixed. But I understand that but it makes not sense when just about half of the people that own these cars are having the same problem. And they are not going to recall it so we have to pay for it out of our pocket. I love my Maxima and Nissan should stand by their work. I do not know if I will be buying a Nissan again because of these. How other people been having problems out of their timing chain and/or transmission on the 04-05 Maxima.

I took my car in to a transmission expert who had a previous customer with the same problem. The car was taken in to the dealership and they could not correct it with a rebuilt transmission. my dealership wants to replace the transmission but won't confirm if that's the solution. Of course, I sent in my LAST payment to Nissan early happy to be finished with payments and now they want 4000 to fix THEIR problem. Is anyone else having this issue?
