CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima has widespread transmission problems. It starts with the vehicle jerking when shifting, & progresses to full-blown transmission failure.

Maxima owners report spending $3,000 to replace the transmission, typically around when the odometer hits 100,000 miles.

There's a class action lawsuit filed in late 2011, & it is still in the "discovery" stage. Apparently, these things take time ... far too much time.

NEVER SPEND YOUR MONEY ON A NISSAN. My transmission started jerking after about 70k miles. I had the transmission flashed to result. When you shift from park to drive or reverse, the car jerks so bad you will think the engine is about to come out. When you accelerate it will not pick up but slip and the RPM will run high. Contacted Nissan about the issue and they told me since it was past warranty there was nothing they could do. Thousands of 05 maxima owners are having the same problem but Nissan has never recalled or owned up to their mistake. The nissan dealership finally told me it was a transmission problem and I had to replace it. it cost me $3500 At one point they told me it was the gas that I was using and that I had to always use premium gas. That was BS. I WILL NEVER BUY ANY NISSAN PRODUCT AGAIN AND YOU SHOULD DO THE SAME AS WELL. I should have stack with my TOYOTA. I was stupid enough to want to try something else. TOYOTA is a faithful if you avoid the electric cars.

the problem started November 2009. Slipped once didn't know what it was, didn't happen again till January of 2010. Called Nissan about my warranty and they said my warranty expired just a few days before i called them. They said they would get back to me and never did. They do not care about customers at all. Wasn't informed my warranty began on the first day it was purchased by prior owners. This used vehicle is costing me too much $24,000 plus $9 thousand dollars interest and i am still paying $415 a month not worth it. Single mom with three kids and they sold me a piece of junk. Thank you so much Nissan Fontana.

I have a 2005 Maxima SL, I bought the car new, about last year I noticed it started jerking and the RPM would accelerate when press on the gas pedal then on surface street it would jerk really bad and stall at stoplights/stop signs. In the morning when the car is not warmed up i would put the car in driver and it would take a minute for it to go into gear then it would jerk. I took it to the mechanic and they said my transmission valve was defected. I'm trading this car in this weekend. I've heard so many complaints about this car tranmission problems. I do not have that kind of money to put into a car that will continue to have this problem.

Transmission is slipping and jerking while shifting. There is also delay in acceleration, and hesitation, then drop when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. Engine Mounts replacement also included in repair total b/c transmission caused them to crack.

Have a 2005 Nissan Maxima 3.5SE, and everything was running like a charm up until November of last year. It started with small jerks here and there when accelerating from 1st to 2nd or decelerating from 2nd to 1st. It's now gotten so bad that the entire car jerks in low gears once the engine has warmed up. Also shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse results in a hard banging motion that is scary, not to mention exceedingly embarrassing.

Driving on the freeway really enhances the problems once I exit onto surface streets. The RPMS jump randomly in both 2nd and 3rd gears. I've had the car stall once at a stoplight. When I apply the breaks it jerks and stops for a split second before finally kicking into gear. I can't believe no recall has been initiated on this! Last time buying a Nissan!

Be careful, replacing the transmission won't fix the jerking problem.

I had my 2005 nissan maxima transmission and controller replaced by dealer because the jerking problem in Feburary, it worked fine , unfortunately recently the problem came again.

not sure how to deal with this.

The mechanic at the dealership told me it needed new transmission and that since I almost had it paid off I should just talk to the sales dept about trading it in because it wasn't worth fixing!!! The nerve! I took it to a local mechanic who verified it needs a new transmission and said he's seen this problem with same car before.Even though he's over $1000 cheaper than dealer , It's not fair for a single mom to have to pay for a big corporation's poorly built vehicle!

I thought I was the only one with the problem since I have 20" rims on my car, obviously I am not. I don't have serious jerking problems with my transmission as others have written about, but I don't want mine to get that far and I don't want to have to pay a significant amount either. What I've noticed is if it's cold and I don't warm my car up, it jerks really hard when changing from 1st to 2nd gear. If I do warm up the car, I don't have any problems out of it as far as it jerking. I've had my transmission flushed and the local Dick Smith Nissan dealership has checked it out and both times I was told that there was nothing wrong with my transmission. Well if its not the transmission, can someone please let me know what is causing the jerking action in my car. I haven't had this problem during the summer time, but we will see what happens as the weather warms up.

My '05 Nissan Maxima - is a jerking, stalling, poc at this point. At 65000 it began slight hesitation - by 72000 slight occasional jerk - and now full blown whiplash inducing jerking into gears. Here's my problem. I've contacted Nissan - who will do nothing - BBB in Washington, but we're out of warranty so no lemon law - NSTB in Washington who will do nothing until my trannie fails to shift in mid-intersection and I die and make national news. Further, Nissan is well aware of the problem with the transmission valve bodies in these cars. They warp and fail when warm. I do well IF I can get up to 45+ mph. It's this simple - I recommend everyone who has these automobiles and problems select a day and we all drive the cars to Smyrna, TN and park in front of the plant with signs and a song blaring (written just for Nissan). Perhaps a little seriously negative publicity on a national level is called for eh? Every auto repair shoppe that I have spoke with is aware of this - even the dealership is aware and has had to replace numerous ones. They, when confronted, admitted this - just before they told me they couldn't find anything wrong (hahahah!). The CSR's are apologetic as I think they have heard this repeatedly. So, to the CEO of NISSAN - Sir, your greedy company's day of accountability and reckoning is coming for the simple reason: "...what goes around, comes around" and for the run around that Nissan has given it's customers..the come-uppance will be huge. Glad I'm not you or an investor in your company....

So let me just say this about that - never ever buy a Nissan is my recommendation.

This is ridiculous. I am researching and have realized that nissan has had a problem with the transmission for this vehicle! They should do something about it! I don't have the $4000 that it is going to cost to fix my car so therefore, it is not fixed yet! And to think I almost considered getting another maxima! I don't think I will be even getting another nissan after this!

The transmission in my car has been working very poorly so I had it checked out only to find that the transmission mount had broken almost in half!!! Unbelievable that so many others have had transmission problems on their 5 year old car! This is an obvious default and should be taken care of by Nissan!! Even after replacing the transmission mount, the car still jerks as I accelerate or decelerate so clearly, this is not the only problem with the transmission.

Well I don't have much to say different than what's been posted. This car has been nothing but a nightmare for me since my purchase. Hard shifting from 1st to 2nd, and hard shifting and slipping from 2nd to 3rd. If anybody knows of a class action lawsuit, please let me know.

I will never buy a Nissan again.

Maxima SE 3.5L

When I purchased my 2005 Nissan Maxima at the Nissan dealership in Henderson, Nevada in 2007, it was sold to me as a Certified Used Vehicle. But ,after looking at the air filter I dont think the car was serviced as a certified used vehicle should have been. In regards to the complaint about the transmission, after about 77,000 miles the car began jerking, coming out of 1st & second gear. At one point, I was driving down the street and the car jerked violently. At that point, I took it to the dealership, and they said that the transmission mount was broken. So, I had that repaired. After that, the car drove fine for a little while, then it began to jerk again. I took it and had the transmission flushed and the filter replaced, which cost me around $200.00. At that point, I drove it for around a month with no problem. After that, it soon started jerking all over again. I took it to the Nissan dealer in Lake Havasu, AZ. At that point, I was told that my car was non operational and they told me that the transmission had to be replaced. Thankfully, my extended warranty, which I paid $2000.00 for, covered the repairs.

After reading all of these comments, I honestly think that Nissan should refund me my money from my extended warranty and fix the issue that they know they are responsible for. I really feel bad for the people that did not have the extended warranty that have to pay out of pocket for these issues that Nissan is obviously aware of. The Lemon Law should protect the rights of these customers. Nissan should step up to the plate and take a lesson from Toyota, who is, at least fixing their vehicle's issues. ISSUE THE RECALL!

When I bought my 2005 Nissan Maxima in 2007 at the Nissan dealership in Henderson, Nevada, it was sold to me as a Certified Used Vehicle. At that time, I was given a long list of everything that they has supposedly done to it. But when I took it in for the first oil change, they asked me if I wanted a new air filter. I said "No, because this was a certified vehicle. " When the technician pulled out the filter and showed it to me, it looked like the original air filter that came with the car, so at that point, I realized that the car had not ever gone through a certified inspection. When I bought the car, it originally had 35,937 miles on it. In March of this year, my car began to jerk badly.

I seems that too many Nissan owners are having a problem with their transmission. Nissan needs to extend the warranty. Common a car 2005 with 70K miles should not need a new transmission. Just like Toyota Nissan needs to own up. It cost $4,000 to replace the transmission.
