This was extremely inconvenient and costly. Truck stalled and would not move. This problem of transmission rupturing into the radiator not only causes the engine to overheat but also ruins the transmission causing possible repairs to both engine and transmission. Bad design.

From what I've read, this is a cross contamination problem between radiator & transmission.Going to take

it to the dealer. It sucks that Nissan WILL NOT issue a recall! The Government should FORCE them to issue a recall. I'm 59 and this is the only NEW vehicle I have ever owned and had planned on driving it forever.I

use all synthetics and thought I had no worries till this.

IN AUGUST I WENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE. THE MECHANIC ADVISED I SHOULD GET MY RADIATOR FLUSHED AND MY RADIATOR CAPS REPLACED. THE CAPS WERE ROTTING. AT THIS POINT I HAD 101,848 MILES ON THE TRUCK. I TOOK CARE OF THAT WITH NO IDEA WHAT WAS COMING LATER. THE TRUCK DROVE FINE UNTIL RECENTLY. MY ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT WAS DRIVING IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE WHEN IT WAS IN 2 WHEEL DRIVE. I BRING IT TO NISSAN AND THAT'S WHERE IT HURTS. ANYWHERE FROM $6500 TO$9000 TO REPLACE RADIATOR AND TRANSMISSION. NOW I FIND OUT THAT THIS HAS BEEN COMMON WITH THIS TRUCK. I TOOK GREAT CARE OF THIS TRUCK AND NOW THIS. WHAT TO DO? DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO TAKE CARE OF THIS RIGHT NOW. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

THIS IS MY START. FROM READING UP ON THIS NISSAN WONT HELP.B.B.B? I NEED SOME LUCK.

We have replaced the radiator already over a year ago, but now the coolant has leaked into the transmission (doesn't make any sense since this wasn't the OE radiator and was already replaced). Read on here how this was an ongoing problem and you should replace the radiator and rebuild the transmission but I find it weird that ALL of this has happened with a new radiator...so is it possible that its one of the cooler lines and not the radiator??????

Frontier LE V6 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,435 miles

I bought this frontier from my Dad, he was the original owner. We both maintained this vehicle regularly and have had no notable issues other then routine maintenance until now. I started feeling as if the truck wasn't shifting correctly. About a week or two after I first began to notice this the check engine light came on. I brought it in to Firestone with whom we have an account and who regularly maintain our vehicle. They said a transmission code came up when they did the diagnostic and I needed to take it to the dealership. (that check cost me $114. The dealership found more then the bad turbine revolution sensor Firestone had found, they said I needed a new body valve for over 2 grand, along with a timing chain replacement, and new coils for a total repair cost of 5 thousand! That visit cost me $107. I took it to another transmission specialist who recommended a brand new Tranny and radiator for $4600 K, thankful that check was free of charge, then my last stop was to Aamco across the street from the Nissan dealership, who told me nothing more at first that there was a transmission issue but would need to take apart the tranny to really know what's up. (By the way the dealership never even test drove the vehicle, Aamco did!) This is where I find out that the radiator has flooded the tranny! A problem he has seen 3 times already this month!!!! He said Nissan dealership across the street even had him do work for them concerning the same issue!!!!!!

Bottom line this will cost me over 3000! for something Nissan was AWARE of! If I was to go on the advice of Nissan of replacing the tranny and radiator there is no guarantee this wouldn't happen again. Aamco is installing a separate cooler for the tranny. Beyond UPSET! I still owe 10000 on this truck and have to borrow money to pay repairs!!!

I am having the same problem. I had my radiator repaired and now I am looking to have my transmission repaired or replaced in the end it is going to cost me about $3,000.00. ( Owners of some of Nissan’s most popular S.U.V.’s and pickup trucks are experiencing failures of their automatic transmissions because radiator coolant is leaking into the systems).

Frontier 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission

Nissan has known about this problem for many years. Instead of doing a recall to replace the radiator before all of the fluid leaked into the tranny, it just extended the warranty from 3 yr/36,000 miles to 8yr/96,000 miles hoping that the failures would happen after that time. Well, mine was only 5 1/2 years old and 51,000 miles. My next vehicle will probably be a Toyota even though I love this truck. Nissan is unscrupulous!!!

Come on, Nissan! Extended Warranty won't get it! I'm over 80,000 miles, and will be out $2500. Nissan wants the consumer to help foot the bill for THEIR bad design. I'll wait and see how this plays out, as I'm waiting for my official diagnosis from an authorized Nissan dealer, but as it stands, I'll never buy Nissan again.

I purchased the vehicle new-judder-shudder started very slight and continued for months-F& R brakes completely gone @ 18K miles-raided hell with dealer-Nissan fixed most of repairs(My part$112.00) I complained about the shudder/judder which was intermittent @ 35-40 MPH-had it in at least 13 times and they could never replicate he issue!! I had the midwest nissan general service mgr. take it for a 50 mile ride to no avail-he said I didn't know how to drive a truck! Kept taking it back to dealer as the shaking got worse-finally the eaton driveshaft ripped the coupler apart and had to be replaced! Never no mention of any issues with the tranny-I asked the service mgr. to check the ATF and he said the system was sealed and no issues were ever encountered with frontier trannys. I had to physically prod them to check the rest of the fluid levels in the drive line! Kept taking back until they were sick of me showing up-they kept saying document the issues which I did and than they would just ignore me! I went thru the 36K warranty period and the problem which was intermittent and kept bothering us when we were driving @35-40 MPH. This problem kept happening over a period of five years. At 59K I decided to take it into a different dealer-they nailed the problem on the first diag.-set me up with a loaner vehicle and had a new tranny air freighted in and had me back on the road in 3 days! However nissan would NOT authorize a NEW radiator-so they flushed mine 5 times. I am currentley 5 months down the road @67K miles-No shudder/judder issues-however I smell anti-freeze every time I shut the engine off! Had it back 2 times & they say its OK??? I did get a extended warranty till 80K miles in writing from them. I feel this was only sent out since the class action lawsuit entered??? I wanted a new truck from nissan after I had taken this in for the lemon laws-however the midwest service mgr. told me on the dealer floor "See you in court" at the BBB--such a P---k!

I am undecided what to do as I know the resale on these trucks is good for c---p--so trade in is laughable if you go into another mfgr. for a trade-in. This is a loose-loose situation and a royal PIA for all Frontier owners who have went thru this issue. You are damned if you keep it after 80K or screwed if you trade it in. Maybe the NTSB also needs to take this car company on and stick them with a large fine like Toyota got smacked with for not reporting defects in a timely manner???

This is such a rampant problem Nissan should fix this. The transmission shop can't get the needed parts for 2 weeks because of the amount of requests around the country for the parts. This has been a major headache and disruption. On top of the costs to fix the issue a rental car is also needed, for two weeks!

I am trying to hold down a job, with no transportation. My mom and I are sharing her car. I am still paying a note on this truck $237.46 a month and owe $8,000.00 on it. I will have to pay the note every month, until it is paid for and then worry about fixing it then. I understand there is a lawsuit pending against Nissan and that I might be able to recoup what it costs to fix the problem. Unfortunately, I have checked around and this will cost $4500.00 plus to fix, as there are all kinds of extra things that have to be done, like installing splash plates and something to keep water from radiator from leaking into transmission and destroying it, which is what has happened to mine. I thought I was looking at about $1000.00 to fix this problem and it would have been hard enough to pay that, but there is no way I have $4500.00!

I had bought a used Certified 2007 Nissan Frontier SE. Its 2wd and crew cab. Started noticing some shuttering, vibrations, while the truck was down shifting or going into over drive the day after I bought it. Worse going up hill or have a load in the bed. I went to the dealer where i bought it to have it checked out. The dealer said nothing was wrong and sent me on my way. I am still having the problems so i did some research and read about this cooler in the radiator. When it cracks, the radiator and transmission fluid mix which causes a trans failure. I called the dealership back and asked him about it, which he said was rare. I then sent Nissan a nice little email about my experience. Sorry to say but I'm still waiting on something to happen. I was medically discharge from the Army and given a percentage on my disabilities. I used that money to get a decent truck. Wrong. This is something else that fuels my fire. Seems like everyone is playing dumb. The bad thing is if the radiator and trans get replaced, you still have the risk of another failure. That"s what the local mechanics are telling me. This needs to be addressed and fixed. The image i am getting is Brand new or Certified used, Nissan is a piece of crap. Nissan needs to do a recall and own up to the issues at hand.

Contamination, coolant and transmission due to internal leak at radiator.

Nissan Refused to pay for transmission replacement an repair. Regardless, our investigation has revealed that the radiator and transmission failures frequently occur beyond 80,000 miles, making the warranty extension useless to most owners. This Nissan radiator defect poses a safety risk to owners who can sustain catastrophic transmission failure while the vehicle is being operated. Although Nissan claims that this is not a "safety issue," it is undeniable that losing forward propulsion on a busy highway can be dangerous.

In 2010, Mr. Mendelsohn and Mazie Slater Katz & Freeman, LLC, filed a nationwide class action lawsuit against Nissan relating to reported defects in Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan Xterra and Nissan Frontier vehicles.

Nissan knew there was a problem with their radiators leaking coolant into the transmission due to faulty tubes rupturing in the radiator and decided not to make the owners aware of the problem in order not to have to replace the radiators resulting in having to have the transmission rebuilt(6,000.00) 0r replaced(8,000.00). I would have much rather replaced the radiator at a cost of 600.00 but was not given a chance due to Nissan's failure to notify their consumers. I've contacted Nissan numerous times and was given the run around and dismissed. Nissan needs to step up and correct their problem.

Well it looks like I am going to be #52. I've been experiencing a slipping at about 40 MPH and slight shuttering during the shift. I have my 2007 Frontier going into the shop tomorrow....based on the discussion here, I'm not even going to deal with Nissan. In the past I've owned another Frontier, an Altima, and an Xterra....this will be my last Nissan. I don't have patience for lack of accountability. Hopefully the shop will treat me nice...I'm expecting about $4K from what everyone is saying, but I also want to make sure they solve the problem from happening again in the future.

Shame.

My 07 frontier has had the same problem with the tranny as everybody else's. I had to replace radiator, rebuild transmission and fluid flush. Now a year after my tranny rebuild the TCM in my transmission has crapped out and am looking at a real convenient $1,500 repair. My repairs have now totaled close to the 6k dollar range and I still owe 10k for the truck!

If anyone has info on the class action suit, i am very interested. Shoot me an email at robbiefazio@yahoo please. I don't even hesitate to put my email out there, that is how pissed I am with Nissan.

This is my second and last Nissan! I thought Nissan stood for quality like Toyota and Honda, but was seriously mistaken on the way they do business. Like someone said above, ''I hope Nissan realizes how quik word travels on the web." I cannot process the fact they are not willing to stand behind their product and fix this problem. Instead of spending maybe $1,000 dollars their cost to fix this, they are losing $10,000's worth of repeat business per customer! If Nissan did the right thing here and fixed their own screw up, i would probably have a life long loyalty to them. Never again will I put my money into Nissan's pocket, spread the word!!!!

Frontier Nismo V6

Transmission fluid and engine coolant mixed together because of a leak in the radiator somewhere causing my transmission to fail. My truck has been at the dealership for one month, I received a letter from Nissan yesterday informing me that they are sorry, but there is nothing Nissan can do to help me. The dealership is aware of the defect, and told me that it would cost almost $6000.00 to repair my vehicle. I am pretty upset, since I am learning that everybody involved knows about this problem. I am even more upset that my son and I got stranded in "school" traffic, and I was only able to drive about 20 mph--- we were almost crashed into by a huge truck that was unaware of my transmision problem. I have never been so scared! If this would have happened while merging into traffic on an in terstate, we could have been killed. I suppose somebody will have to die for Nissan to step up and fix this problem.

Driving to town, felt like the transmission popped out of gear. Pull to side of road and found that I had no reverse and forward in low gear only. Took it in and was told that I needed a new transmission and a new radiator because the transcooler had malfunctioned and caused the radiator fluid to breach the transmission oil at a cost of close to $8K. This appears to be a common problem that some have apparently gotten their warranties extended. Might this make for a class action suit?
