CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Nissan Altima has two fairly significant problems with the floor pan rusting through & motor mounts breaking.

Altima owners report that up to a basketball-size hole develops under the floor mats where the floor pan metal rusts through. Average repair cost is over $1,000.

The broken motor mounts are less of a problem - they break at ~75,000 miles average & it's $400 to fix. Still, motor mounts should not break!

I have heard from several autobody shops that they are seeing this a lot in 2005 Altima's and they attribute it to a flawed undercarriage design that traps moisture and salt.

2005 Nissan Altima, 80,000 miles, 2.5 S. My father brought his Nissan in to be inspected and they will not pass it for inspection because of this rusted out floor boards. This is one of the best cars they have had and love it. The ride is super smooth and in perfect condition.......only for the rotted, rusted floor boards. I have read in other reviews that this problem is caused by a plug that is supposed to divert water from the windshield to the ground, but because the seal around this plug is faulty or inadequate, it leaks right into the floor panels, thus.....the RUST (this is the best explanation I could see feasible along with the salt and water issue splashing up from the roads during winter seasons-however not sure the credibility.)

From reading all of the other complaints on this issue, I CANNOT BELIEVE Nissan is NOT doing anything about it. Well I am about to. I will be talking with one of the top law offices that deals with class action lawsuits later on today and see if i(we) have a valid case. I am appalled to see so many people left out in the dark to pay outrageous prices for a severely flawed design in which the maker is so disrespectful to their own craft and market that they will not even help THEIR OWN consumers.

If you are willing or want more information on this class action lawsuit please use the form provided to contact me. I will try to direct everyone to the lawyer on the case, we will need 30-50 people to start the lawsuit, then it will be open to thousands of others who have been affected. No one should foot a few thousand dollar bills and Nissan just turn their noses up at us. Enough is enough! Join us!

floor pan rusted through floor pan rusted through

Owner of 2005 Nissan Altima (purchased new), garage kept, regularly maintained (oil changes, brakes, etc.) at dealership. On October 15 while I at the dealership for oil change I mentioned rattle from underneath the car and would they check for me. Their findings was a new muffler system for $623 (which I did not have done).

On way home stopped at private muffler dealer for their opinion and that's when I found out about the rusted out floorboards. There is not one bit of rust on the rest of the car. Never in the 9 1/2 years did the dealership ever mention this occurring. Contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs, was assigned a Regional Rep who instructed me to take photos and get an estimate. Their decision was they were not about to take responsibility. I'm told a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) was issued but the consumer was never made aware. This is definitely a defect and someone at Nissan should own up to it!

Dear Nissan, take responsibility for your flaw in design or use of cheap ass materials and post a recall on any and all Nissans with rusty or rotting floor boards ($500 repair). Quit giving people the run around, stand up and be accounted for !!!!

Update from Mar 4, 2015: Car has no rust anywhere else , except for the passenger side floor board. Nissan has ignored my complaints. Nissan has not read my complaints. Nissan keeps giving the same BS over and over . I even asked them to explain why to no avail. I asked them to do a recall. They told me to take it to a Nissan dealer, where the repair garage have said they've seen their share of them. I demand justice. I paid $16k for this car and that act as if this is normal....I've never had a vehicle do this , not even my 91 Toyota Supra with 129k miles. NISSAN is a joke!

I had this mentioned to me by another Nissan customer. His wife has the exact model (Altima 2005) I have. I took it to my mechanic who said that this is a design flaw. The driver side has a hole in the floor pan. Both sides under the front seats are rusted pretty good. I called Nissan and they told me to take it to a Nissan dealer which I did and he told me the same thing, that it was rusted out. Now this is my life and safety on the line as well as anyone I put in my car. I was told that this would not pass an inspection.

Since I reported this I noticed how many other Nissan Altimas 2005 models from all parts of the country have the same design flaw and rust. I want Nissan to fix this at their cost. This is my safety and that never expires. I filed a couple of complaints, one on a consumer site and the other on the federal safety site. I want this noticed and fixed. Tragedy should not have to happen to wake them up. I have never had this with a Chevy, so this is what a luxury car is about?

Please help!!!

Update from Nov 9, 2014: I would like all who have the same problem to contact NAFTSA, the government site. Once documented, they are the ones who issue recalls. One of us cannot do this alone. On one site there are over 118 complaints for the same issue.

About a week ago, I started hearing what sounded like something loose on the passenger side and thought it might be something related to the exhaust system bouncing up and down - but when I checked the muffler and pipe, it seemed to be secured. OK, and the rubber isolators were still working, OK. Then just this weekend I finally take a look under the passenger side and see a large 6" wide by 12" long area of the metal underbody that has disappeared, with the edges of the hole rusted and rough and multiple layers of metal badly rusted. I think there is still one layer left between the outside and the inside - but it's flexible, so maybe it's some kind of plastic flooring below the carpet.

No idea how that happened so quickly - I have never noticed a problem there before. I was just in the shop a couple weeks ago and there was no mention of it. My theory right now is that somehow it rusted from the inside - or perhaps we hit something that damaged the area from the outside - and then a passenger getting into the car put their foot down right there and caused the layers to fail and start coming loose.

The driver's side looks fine. I'm going to my mechanic tomorrow and probably the body shop after that for at least a quote. The car is quickly becoming too expensive to keep...

My 2005 V6 Altima was never run in the salt. I was told that it was a design flaw and has since been changed. My car was put up for winter months . Was really angry when told about rusted floorboards on passenger side. Was told it was a common complaint. My car has been kept in tip top shape, so I feel manufacturer should have covered what it cost me to fix it with such low mileage and the shape of the car.

floor pan rusted through

Just noticed rust spots under the floors of both the front driver and passenger sides. I was cleaning my car and noticed I could see through a little hole clear to the ground under the gas flap lever. No idea how long these rust spots have been there, but they're both about 6"x14" or so. I've not yet looked into what it would cost to fix, but I suspect it will be more than I care to spend and thus I will be selling/trading it in. Sounds like it's a relatively common issue and that's a shame considering how great the car has been otherwise.

Owned car for 9 years and did not know about this. This car only went to the dealer for everything for repair and I paid dearly. Never was inexpensive . It was never pointed out until May 2014. I called Nissan and explained to them the problem. But the person in customer service said they only warranty this up to four years. Nissan said they couldn't do anything.

Took it to a collision shop and shop repaired it for $500 on the passenger side. Shop said that this was something that was not overnight. Will be seeing the service manager on Monday, May 30th. I can't understand what the 23 point inspection is, when car is up on the lift what were they looking at. I found it within 3 seconds. Will see service manager Monday and probably will get nowhere. Apparently mechanics find all other problems down the line. But they can't see rust or holes in the floorboard. Well I am not stopping here they will do something for me. Or this will hit the newspapers or news. I thought that Nissan would give something towards this. But I guess they don't care at all. Just want to sell cars and make money.

Both passenger and driver side floor is rusting through and will eventually leave two giant holes. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and spoke with Nissan. The Nissan rep measured his words very carefully not committing to anything other than Nissan will not help me. He would not say if the rust is normal because he can not define the term normal, he also would not say whether Nissan's are designed to last longer than 10 years, very scripted response.

I bought this car new in October of 2004. I've not had any complaints until now. The passenger side floor pan has rusted through, ( you can actually see the interior carpet ) and I cannot get a state inspection sticker unless it is repaired. I know the car is 9 years old, and I'm not trying to be unreasonable but I also own a 1994 Ford F-150, a vehicle which is 10 ten years older and has almost 100,000 miles more and the floor pans look great compared to my Nissan.

Due to the circumstances I believe Nissan should repair this, but I'm being told there is no help coming from them.

With this being the stance of the company, I believe my stance will be not to buy another Nissan and not to recommend one.

Same issue... rusted through floor panel on the passenger side. No rust anywhere else on the vehicle. The dealer inspected the vehicle and provided an estimate of $2400 to fix it. There is no service bulletin for this issue. The regional representative simply said that they were not willing to do anything to help with the problem. It's clear that this is an issue for almost any Altima with this floor board design that is located in a region that has winter. Very disappointing that Nissan will not acknowledge their accountability for a design flaw that has a potential safety impact (allows engine fumes to enter the cabin area).

NISSAN ISSUED A TECH SERVICE BULLETIN (TSB) FOR THIS ISSUE ALREADY, BUT UNLESS YOU GO TO THEM WITH A COMPLAINT, THEY WON'T NOTIFY YOU THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE - THEY WILL REPAIR IT IF THE DAMAGE MEETS THE CRITERIA.

A friend of mine who is a technician told me that certain years, I'm not sure exactly but I know it included 2005 model years, that the floorboards are prone to corrosion and were rotting out and that the dealer had to remove the old ones and weld in new ones. Apparently this also occurred on the Murano as well around the same years. But Nissan is hush hush about their TSBs that they issue unless it's an imposing safety hazard probably because they assume most people generally ignore issues with their vehicles or simply don't realize them. But CALL CALL CALL and tell them that you found that there was a TSB issued and you're having issues and want it repaired - don't ever ask them or question yourself because they will deny it was a problem.. Trust me - that's how I got a new engine in my Altima.

This is absolutely ridiculous! My car is in pristine condition inside and out (so I thought). I'm getting it ready to sell and my mechanic comes and tells me I have to come look at something. I had no idea what to expect. I look at the bottom of my car and the floor pans on both the driver AND passenger side are COMPLETELY rusted through. I could see my carpet! I don't see how this possible, since my car is only 8 years old. And on top of that I don't even drive it in winter!! Nissan better look into this or I'm never going to buy another one again. Neither will my family or my friends if I can help it.

I have the same problem with my 2005 Nissan Altima. Rusted passenger side floor panel. Called Nissan. They will not repair it. I complained to the National highway and safety board. Make sure you document all calls and get a letter from Nissan stated they will not repair the problem. The mileage is not causing this car to have a rusted floor panel. I've only had the car for 8yrs (purchased at the end of 2004). The mechanic said its rusted proof from the bottom. Therefore, the snow and ice is not causing the problem. There is a leak coming from inside the car.
