It cost me $1,100.17 to replace the steering column. On August 19, 2014 I brought the car to Ford to be serviced for recall 14S05. Because this recall was for power steering and the Ford Motor Company is aware of this problem, I thought the expense would be part of the recall. I have come to learn the the recall was to update the software only. Which was done to this car and didn't help. The Ford Motor Company should be held accountable for the seriousness of losing the ability to steer the car due to faulty manufacturing and the compromised position that is placed on the driver, other cars on the road and pedestrians. This car has only $45,000.

Under recall 14S05 the electronic steering assist was updated but did not fix the defect. The recall only gives a chime and warning that steering is going to fail. Started my car to warm up and noticed my steering wheel vibrating and twitching side to side. Upon driving it still continued to vibrate and make a noise. The vibration and noise has become worse. Called Ford dealer to have it looked at thought it might have something to do with the electric power steering recall. I received the recall in October but at this time my car was not acting up and I have busy work schedule so had not had it looked at yet. But on December 29th, 2014 I took it in. The mechanic tolls me all the recall was for was a software update. So I figured that would fix the vibration and it didn't. I feel just because my car don't throw a code at that time I took it in Ford will not replace the torque sensor now even though the mechanic could visible see my steering wheel vibrating and twitching. So now I get to fix it my self like many other Ford owners. All the software did for was is warn us our power steering is out. They should have been made to replace the defective torque sensors. If our torque sensors wasn't going out we wouldn't had needed that software up date. Ford is getting away with the cheap simple fix. I don't know much about the computers they use on the cars but the computer probably don't though a code unless something is not working at all not just going bad. The mechanic should be trained to diagnose with their eyes and ears too.

For many weeks the steering of the Mariner has been "twitching." Then a few more weeks later, at the time we would start the vehicle the steering would not be working making it very hard to turn. We would just restart the vehicle and it the steering would be back. Now the steering will quick as we are going down the road. This is very unsafe and has the potential to cause an accident. The vehicle is very hard to maneuver when the steering quits, and if it were to quit as you were making a turn or in a sharp curve, the outcome could possibly be very bad. This is clearly a safety issue.

While waiting at a stop sign to make a right turn, my steer wheel jerked in my hand and seem to lock. When the traffic cleared, I tried to make the turn and the steering wheel had definitely lock, making it impossible to turn and steer and placing me in a very dangerous situation. I stopped the car and turned it off while in traffic. When I restarted the car the steering had unlocked. My car was in an accident a month prior to this incident and I had body work done, however the dealership and the insurance company both stated that this was not a result of the accident. The steering on the 2009 Mercury Mariner is electronic and failed to operate properly. The entire steer column has to be replace at my expense.

The 2009 Mercury Mariner is experiencing intermittent failure of the power steering system. (at least 3 times so far) when the car is started, the steering is nearly impossible to move. Repeated restarting of the car will sometimes restart the power steering and then the car is drivable until it is shut off. The dealer tells us that the only repair authorized by Ford is the complete replacement of the steering column - an approximately $1300 part plus the hourly rate. This is an extremely dangerous type of failure. If it would occur while my 17 year old daughter is driving the car, she would be unable to control the vehicle and would most likely cause an accident.

My daughter was driving my 2009 Mercury Mariner at a speed of 25 mph. The steering wheel basically locked up. No warning. I checked online and there are numerous complaints about this happening. This is an outrage! if she or I would have been on the hwy at a high rate of speed we would have been killed. I have three granddaughters who ride in this vehicle as well. I just bought this vehicle January 2012. It only has 63300 miles. I take it in to the Ford dealer for service check ups and oil changes. I do take good care of it. While traveling at 55 mph, power steering stopped working making vehicle very hard to steer. By turning key off and restarting, while tugging on steering wheel, power steering will start working and may last 30 minutes or 3 minutes. While working, steering wheel shakes and makes noise. Vehicle pulls to the left. Ford denies having had this problem before and wants to replace steering column for $1,396.57. Complaints on the internet about this problem are numerous. I do not want to buy another defective steering column and don't understand that power steering problem would be solved.
