Extreme steering wobble at freeway speeds when front wheels experience a bump or uneven pavement/pothole.

Bought Wrangler in may of 2018. Have always noticed that the steering alignment has been off, or that it has at least 1 inch to 2 inches in play. Meaning that I can move the steering wheel to the left or right and it does not impact steering direction. Vehicle also does not track straight, it pulls to the left. No longer covered under warranty as I am at 20K miles now. Steering damper has been replaced twice now first time was at 14,000 miles. Second time at 19,000.. hitting an expansion joint or pothole at speeds North of 70mph will cause severe shaking to the point I have to slow down to speeds of around 50mph for it to go away. Not safe at all on the freeway. This is a safety defect. Fca should buyback the Wrangler and work on fixing the obvious flaw in frame engineering, the steering damper is just a bandaid. The steering damper is going to continue going out and causing the death wobble.

Death wobble, has been at the dealership 4 times and was just picked up for the 5th time. Today they are replacing recalled parts this happens at ant speed at this point in time. And began in January 2019. I have only had the vehicle since July 2018. In February the steering damper was replace, at this time we also had an issue with the steering column locking up while driving nothing was fixed on that issue only the steering damper, about 3000 miles later, the wobble began again, in July 2019 the vehicle went back in for the replacement of the steering damper, in August it went back in for what they stated was the recalled part a new steering damper was replaced, that night I drove the Jeep home and still had the wobble, they picked it up last week to replace the steering damper and nothing was done, the picked it up today to do a new task bar and an alignment. This vehicle is unsafe. I have already lost one child due to an automobile accident. This does not make me feel safe driving this vehicle

At highway speeds, suspension and/or steering mechanism wobbles and vibrates violently (this is felt in the steering wheel) when encountering bumps and holes in highway surface. The violent steering vibration continues until reducing speed by approximately 20 mph by braking. This condition was unmanageable at 6000 miles and fca replaced the steering stabilizer. Condition became unmanageable again at 15000 miles and fca replaced steering stabilizer again (V41recall).

On September 10, 2019 I took my Jeep Wrangler in for a steering damper customer satisfaction notification (recall). On September 20th, 2019 I was driving 65mph down the highway when the Jeep began to violently shake, not stopping until I activated my brakes and began to pull off to the shoulder. I exited the highway to make sure my tires were fine and I could not see anything out of the ordinary. The Jeep ran normal after this occurrence, but the shake was intense, and scary while going 65mph on the highway. The steering damper being replaced does not seem to have rectified the situation.

Jeep jlu began "death wobble" at 70mph while on I-485 (speed limit is 70). Had to slow down to 40mph to get it to stop, which almost caused a crash with vehicles behind/beside me slowing to match. Since then, "death wobble" has occurred 2-3 times per week on various roads. Speeds 50-70. I now have 3 roads where I can replicate it and will be going back to the dealership. Was told months ago by dealership "it's not death wobble; sometimes stuff gets stuck in the wheels and makes a clunking sound." Sorry, not sorry. Entire Jeep front end felt like it was on hydraulics.

The car shakes uncontrollably when driving on the highway and after hitting a bump or imperfection in the road. I have had the problem fixed once before a few months ago. Last wee when driving back from dropping my son off at college the car shook uncontrollably at least a dozen times. The car seemed to shake at higher speeds and I would have to pull the car off the road to almost a complete stop to make the shaking stop.I also had the car repaired for the same issues at scap Jeep in fairfield ct a few months ago. They said it was the steering damper. The car was fine for a few months but the problem came back again. The incident happened on 8/25. We fear taking the car on the highway.

I have owned several Jeep over the last 15 years and this particular event was the worst that I have ever encountered and was ongoing. We we traveling on dry smooth asphalt pavement on highway 82 10 miles East of basalt co at apx. 750 pm with outdoor temperature of 67* heading to aspen at apx 55 mph. All stock no add on's on this vehicle. All of the sudden the entire steering wheel started to shake and rattle so hard that I had no time to pull over and had to come to a complete stop on the highway. The wobbling would not stop until we reached 15 miles per hour. Started to head to aspen again and in another 3 minutes the same wobbling, violent shaking started again at apx. 50-60 mph. There may have been a small indentation in the pavement. This was so upsetting for my aunt, that she refused to get back in my Jeep and also refused to drive back to Texas after this experience. When driving back to Texas, every time I hit the smallest hole I would slow down with anticipation that the wobble would start again. I drove 55 mph all the way back so that I would feel more comfortable if it occurred again. This is a situation that needs to be addressed and fixed. When a passenger refuses to ride in a vehicle after experiencing this first hand it puts a burden on the family and the joy of owning a car. I do have a dash cam video if needed that I will keep on file. This is the 5th time this has happened 3 times before August and twice in August, my Jeep was just serviced and inspected on August 15 2019. I have brought this to the dealers attention and they are not aware of any permanent fixes. This almost caused us to be rear ended on the highway at night on a blind curve.

Wrangler

  • 10,000 miles
My new (first owner) 2018 Jeep Wrangler (jl) unlimited sport developed violent, sudden terrifying vibrations at approximately the 10,000 odometer mark. This condition was repeatedly induced at hi-way and freeway speeds (40-70 mph) when a slight imperfection was encountered. Examples of sufficient imperfections include freeway irregularity, transitions at overpasses, slight potholes, and similar disturbances. The vehicle would enter a violent left-to-right shaking evidenced by a steering wheel that was difficult to retain a grip on, terrified passengers, and dangerous circumstances due to having to slow to approximately 35-45 mph to allow the vibrations to subside and control to be regained. On daily commutes on the freeway. Jeep was taken to Jeep dealership in archbold Ohio where it was supposed to have been fixed but the issue remains to this day.

My new (first owner) 2018 Jeep Wrangler (jl) unlimited sport developed violent, sudden front-wheel transverse oscillations (forceful, terrifying vibrations) at approximately the 7,000 odometer mark. On daily commutes on the freeway (110 N, 405, I5, 10E) this would occur routinely 3-6 times. Two Jeep dealerships (downtown los angeles, and scott robinson in torrance [both southern California dealerships]) were unable to resolve the issue. The first reported that the vehicle was functioning properly, and the second was non-responsive to request for help.
