The contact leased a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the steering wheel felt extremely loose while making turns or driving above 45 mph. The dealer (heritage Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram parkville, 9219 harford rd, parkville, md 21234, 1-877-391-7850) was unable to diagnose the failure. The dealer indicated that the manufacturer had not yet developed a software update for the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 18V343000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

problem #156

Jun 072018

Wrangler

  • 25 miles
The vehicle has excessive play in the steering. As a result, the vehicle wanders and excessive steering wheel travel is required to bring the vehicle back to the center of the lane. This occurs when the vehicle is in motion and when traveling at both city and highway speeds. It is a constant struggle to keep the vehicle centered when traveling. The issue is worse when traveling on slightly uneven or above normal road crown. The steering wheel can be centered, or crooked to either side. This demonstrates the excessive play in the wheel.

Loose steering causing vehicle drifting at highway speeds. I have to constantly correct the vehicle from drifting. Extreme play and dead spots in steering wheel. This needs to happen in order to maintain straight line and staying in lane. Vehicle drifts towards other lanes and vehicles which is very dangerous to drive. Requires driver to correct steering wheel to stay in lane constantly.

Wrangler

  • 3,000 miles
Vehicle shakes uncontrollably back and forth after hitting bump or change in pavement height at highway speed (60 to 70 mph). This started after roughly 2800 miles (6 weeks of ownership). This causes a loss of steering control and feeling that driver will lose control of vehicle. This has happened 4 times in last six days. Vehicle was taken to dealer who says they cannot find problem or recreate this loss of steering control. After hitting bump yesterday the only thing that stopped back and forth shaking was to pull to side of interstate highway. This situation is extremely dangerous. While this loss of steering control and shaking does not occur at slower speeds (yet), I believe this vehicle is completely unsafe to drive and will eventually cause a serious crash if it cannot be fixed.

While the vehicle is in motion the steering is very loose. You can move the steering wheel left and right about 4 inches in play and the wheels never turn at all. This makes drifting, especially at high speeds, a huge safety risk. You must overcorrect the wheel in order to stay in your lane while driving. The caster nut and gear box nut seem to come from the factory extremely loose causing this potentially life threatening safety hazard.

At highway speeds over 70mph, the steering becomes vague to the point of a loss of fine control. Without steering input and without significant cross winds, the front wheels will steer quickly from left to right and back. The change in direction is so drastic that onstant and careful attention is required to avoid unexpected lane changes. I've owned two other Wrangler (2000 and 2007) and this is not a condition based on steering geometry or 4WD systems. This is a life-threateningly dangerous condition and requires immediate government oversight and interdiction.

The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 18V675000 (steering); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. Westbury Jeep Chrysler Dodge Ram (100 jericho turnpike, jericho, NY 11753, (516) 336-4784) was made aware of the recall and stated that the parts were unavailable. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and provided the contact with case number: 57197558. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

My VIN is listed under UA5 recall about the track bar welds. I feel very uncomfortable about the possibility the welds are weak or not done properly and possibly break off. I have not heard back from Jeep/Chrysler/fca at all. After contacting the dealership, they had not idea this was an issue. I'm not concerned about the steering wheel feeling 'loose' as others say. The play doesn't bother me. But the weld issue is a concern. I looked at them visually but I'm no expert. While they don't look clean I don't know if they're structurally sound.

My welds to the track bar are a major concern to me and my family. They don't look to be compliant and I'm concerned that they may break. There's a recall and my VIN doesn't seem to be in the current recall but they look worse than ones that are currently in the recall list. Please see attachments.

Got a recall notice (UA5) for a brand new 2018 Jeep Wrangler jl regarding possible bad frame welds. Dealerships do not have instructions about how to inspect the welds or what to do if an issue is found. No clear way to determine if the vehicle is safe to drive without an inspection that the dealerships don't seem capable of performing.

Vehicle is impossible to keep on the road. Steering has so much play I have almost struck the guard rails and/or other adjacent vehicles. Especially acute at highway speeds. Fca has refused to admit a severe safety issue exists despite thousands of complaints on blogs and online forums. There is 1 - 2 inches or more of play in steering that requires fatiguing attention while driving to keep the vehicle in its lane. Shocking fca has not had a recall despite online posts with fixes / adjustments to the steering box that have solved the issue. Dealers refuse to make the adjustment because it I not authorized by fca. Please get involved before serious accidents occur. I just saw a recall was issued for steering on this model due to poor factory welds to the track bar. This is a separate but still serious safety control issue. This happens (noticeable) traveling above 30 miles per hour. Fca is in denial -help!!! they will not make the adjustment at the dealer.

After purchasing my Jeep rubicon I notice that the vehicle steering wandered on the highway. I was not able to keep the vehicle straight without it wandering from side to side. To much play in the steering wheel. I had less than 100 miles. I scheduled an appointment with the Jeep dealership to have it inspected. The Jeep was inspected and I was told they found no problem with it, however I did some research and soon learned that others had been experiencing the the same problem. To fix it one owner took his in to his dealer and they made an adjustment in the steering to a ( -8 ) and it went away, but it made his steering harder to turn.

I have not had an issue with the faulty track bar weld as of yet, but I am absolutely not driving until a fix/replacement has occurred. I have 3 children and I have to think about their safety and mine. I cannot imagine how this problem can be satisfactorily fixed. Obviously cannot put a band aid on

From the day I picked it up steering is dangerously loose at speeds above 45 mph. On winding backroads you have to struggle constantly to keep in your lane. People will die from this, it is that loose. My wife refuses to drive it after one trip. I contacted Jeep and they told me there was a tsb for my Jeep. The dealership said nothing was wrong and when I complained about the tsb they claimed they did it. There is no difference in the steering. I just reached 2000 miles. I can't afford to just get rid of it.

Steering is very 'loose' especially with highway driving at increased speeds. So much so that it is very scary when cars are in the next lane. There is a lot of 'play' in the steering required to keep the vehicle steady in the lane but even slight corrections cause the vehicle to go too far in the other direction. This started with my drive home from the dealership on 8/25/18. I avoid highway driving as much as possible. I have not experienced this issue with our 2017 Jeep rubicon.

  • 1,200 miles
Terrible steering, drifts way, way too much. There is approximately 1' of play to left and right. It is difficult to stay in lane. Dealership doesn't know what to do. Vehicle has less than 3000 miles, it's a 2018 Jeep Wrangler jl. This is an unsafe driving condition that's needs a repair or solution to correct before people are seriously injured.
