While driving highway speeds and hitting a bump or going across a railroad track. I get sudden vibration in the front end end and through my steering wheel also known as the death wobble. Very dangerous especially if going in a corner on an interstate.

problem #337

Oct 292018

Wrangler

  • 10,000 miles
At highway speeds (60+ mph), the entire steering column and Jeep shakes after I pass over a bridge. The only way to come out of the shake is to lower my speed down to about 40 mph which is unsafe when in heavy traffic. The first time it happened (~10,000 miles on my new Jeep) with intensity, I would have lost control of my vehicle if I did not have both hands on the wheel. I was truly scared. The dealership replaced my steering wheel damper which helped for a little while. About 2 months later (~13,000 miles on my Jeep), it happened again. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and they are looking it over again.

Severe death wobble. Violent shaking will not stop unless I pull over and come to a complete stop. This is extremely dangerous when on the highway.

problem #334

Dec 282018

Wrangler

  • 10,800 miles
On the highway while traveling straight ahead at speeds above 65 mph any time the vehicle is introduced to a bump, dip in the highway, transition to a bridge or change in pavement the steering wheel shakes violently and the vehicle is virtually uncontrollable. In order to get the vehicle to stop shaking speed must be reduced to 30 mph or lower. The vehicle is not drivable at highway speed as every bump, dip or road transition causes this symptom.

Steering and control drastically impaired when hitting a bump over 50 mph. Car and steering wheel violently shake and causes me to lose control of the vehicle. Car is stock with 0 modifications and less that 700 miles on it. Whoever says this is not a safety concern is wrong. I nearly crashed on the highway going 55 mph. Family will not drive with me in the car anymore due to issue. This is a brand new car. How can this be justified?

I've had three rubicons in the past and the steering on my new 2018 rubicon jl unlimited is horrible. The car wanders left and right, there is much too much play in the steering wheel. It feels very unsafe to drive. I took it to the dealer and they acknowledge that the car steering is very unstable, yet they don't know how to fix it. It happens constantly. But the faster you go the more unstable it feels. It has been happening since I purchased it.

The radio is being replaced for the second time. It has the start stop feature and it will go completely dead and require time to restart I was driving 60 mph and it started shaking violently and it has done in twice in two days. It is terrifying I had to pull off to the shoulder.

Wrangler

Saturday 11/10 going 60 mph on highway my steering wheel began to shake violently only to correct once slowing down to 40 mph on highway. Took vehicle to dealership on Monday 11/12. Steering dampener was replaced and vehicle was returned Tuesday 11/20. On Tuesday 12/18 while going 65 mph on highway the steering wheeel once again began to shake violently and only when slowing down in morning traffics did it stop. The vehicle had 1,000 miles since it was returned in November. I began my lease on this vehicle at the end of September and it has 3,000 miles in 3 months. It is once again back in service and awaiting another steering dampener as a replacement. Jeep customer service and dick scott in Plymouth have both been extremely pleasant to work with. However, I have serious concerns that this may happen again even once the vehicle is returned. Original steering dampener failed at 2,000 miles and replacement dampener from Nov 2018 failed at 1,000 miles. The term that is often used for this steering shaking is the death wobble and I have serious concerns of something signivwnt happening. All steering shaking shave occurred on the highway between 60-65 mph while going straight. No major potholes or disruption to the road was experienced.

Death wobble when hitting bumps on the highway above 60mph. I had to pull over and slow down to 45 mph for it to stop. Dealer replaced the stabilizer with an aftermarket one since the replacement part is on backorder and the issue is still present.a steering stabilizer will not fix the issue, it only masks it. The vehicle has 1200 miles on it and is completely stock. Their is something wrong with either the track bar joints or the steering geometry. Fca will not admit the know its an issue.

Dec 172018

Wrangler

  • 9,445 miles
While driving at high rates of speed and hit a bump in the road the vehicle will start to shake uncontrollably. At that point I'm required to slow the vehicle down to approximately 30 to 40 miles an hour before it will subside. This is happened to me numerous times on the highway. We have brought it to the dealer where they said they couldn't duplicate it happening and dismissed it. However on my way to work today which is an hour drive one way it happened to me four times in which I had traffic backed up behind me and angry because I had to slow down on a 3-lane highway in the center of traffic in order to control the vehicle. This is almost caused me to get into an accident because I have tried to get off the road as quickly as possible.

While driving at 55-75 mph, when hitting a bump, the wheels start bouncing erratically and the steering wheel shakes violently. The only way to get it to stop is to slow down to 40-50 mph. Out of all the cars and trucks I've ever driven, I've never experienced anything even close to this. Everyone in the car freaked out and now no-one in my family will drive the car. It's a new Wrangler, still < 10,000 miles and no modifications to anything - completely stock. This has happened about 20-25 times. Our recent 3 hour drive on the expressway, it happened 4 times.

problem #325

Nov 012018

Wrangler

  • 11,000 miles
Experienced 5 instances of impaired steering response between 11 K and 12.5 K miles. 1: 65 mph exiting freeway, steering wheel would not turn. Released wheel pressure and turn completed. 2: negotiating an S curve on a local road at 55 mph, wheel would not turn. Released pressure and completed turn. 3: turning right onto an interstate from a stop, steering wheel did not want to turn but I forced it with additional pressure. 4 and 5: felt unusual resistance when turning on local streets at low speed, 35 mph or less, but steering resistance was not as severe as in instances above. The steering up to around 11 K miles was fine. The 5 instances above happened at random intervals and speeds, and I have been unable to replicate the issue on purpose. The first instance was particularly dangerous as if I had been trying to avoid something at speed I would likely have been unable to do so because I covered quite a distance before recovering from surprise and trying to turn again. In the first two instances I do not know if I could have forced the steering wheel thru the turning resistance by maintaining pressure until the power steering system woke up.

2018 Jeep Wrangler jl unlimited steering is very sloppy at all speeds. Steering is very soft and unresponsive causing the vehicle to wander from side to side in the lane while driving at various speeds. Steering does not hold position, or remain centered, vehicle drifts in the lane in both directions at various speeds. Almost constant correction is needed to keep vehicle moving in a somewhat straight line.

Dec 142018

Wrangler

  • 775 miles
In one instance, when driving at speeds above 60 miles per hour on the highway, the power steering either failed or something within the steering system locked up. Decelerating below 40 miles per hour releases the steering and you can steer the vehicle properly again. In another instance, driving 45 miles per hour on city streets, the same lock up occurred. Slowing down to below 40 miles per hour allowed the Jeep to be controlled once again. This happened once on 12/14/2018 (highway) and then again on the city street on 12/15/2018. Thankfully in both instances I was able to safely maneuver to the side of the road to avoid collision.

Steering locked up at above 60 miles an hour 3 times and has almost caused me an accident all 3 times. Once almost hitting the side of the freeway and 2 other cars when it locked on an overpass going left. I couldn't straighten it and invaded the next lane. Steering also wonders more than usual compared to other Wrangler I've driven. Latest incident is on the date selected.
