problem #378

Wrangler

  • 10,400 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Violent steering wobble occurs after traveling over uneven road surfaces at highway speeds, making the vehicle extremely difficult to control. Vehicle is a stock jl Wrangler unlimited sahara with less than 10,000 miles. The condition has occurred since the vehicle was new, and a simple bump, bridge joint or pot hole can set the vehicle into a death wobble at speeds above 60 mph.

With about 1100 miles on this brand new Jeep I hit a bump on the highway at 65-70 mph. The Jeep started to shake violently and I had all I could do to hold on to the steering wheel. If you slow down to under 40 mph the shaking stops. Ever since anytime I am on a highway at 60 mph or more even a bridge joint will cause the Jeep to go into it's shake, rattle, and roll routine. I can always stop it by immediately slowing down but in heavy boston traffic this is simply not a safe alternative. For a $40,000 vehicle that has hardly been driven yet I think this is a manufacturing defect that is extremely dangerous. I hope you will take it seriously as this defect has been going on in Jeep for years and it has not been addressed. If you don't think it's a safety issue you take it on rte 128 at rush hour and get back to me when it gives you a heart attack.

Wrangler

  • 7,100 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Right around 7000 miles, I began experiencing death wobble at various speeds. The death wobble is initiated when speeds are greater than 35mph and the Wrangler hits an imperfection (bump, sewer cap, highway bridge expansion gap, pothole, etc). The Wrangler's steering wheel begins shaking/oscillating violently back and forth and does not stop until the vehicle speed is brought down to a stop. This is no fun when it happens to you at highway speeds. I have reached out to fca but they told me this is normal for a fixed-axle/solid-axle vehicle. This is not normal, it is actually quite dangerous. I am afraid to drive my vehicle.

Wrangler

  • 17,000 miles
The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. While driving 55 mph or more, the steering seized. When driving less than 55 mph, the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was taken to scranton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram (located at 1146 Wyoming ave, scranton, pa 18509, (570) 344-1261) to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code or duplicate the failure. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent and seemed to occur during colder temperatures. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 17,000. The VIN was not available.

problem #373

Jan 122019

Wrangler

  • 5,100 miles
While driving on a highway, construction zone on a speed below 55, suddenly the steering started to wobble. Steering took a 45 degree to the right and was about to hit a car next but gained control back by holding the steering tight and steering to left, lost control fo the vehicle for almost 30 secs and reduced speed to 20 mph turning on the emergency blinker (this was on a freeway). Awaiting to schedule a service appointment with the dealer.

When driving at speeds over 50+ mph and hitting a bump in the road, the steering wheel will shake violently until speed is reduced to below 40 mph. The dealer has serviced it twice trying to add a dampener however this does not fix the problem. Dealer now says the problem most likely can't be fixed.

Feels like a death wobble. Hitting a bump on the highway caused major shaking in the steering. Had it at the dealer once and they replaced the steering damper. Happening now again

problem #370

Dec 052018

Wrangler

  • 9,800 miles
When driving on the highway, or at speeds above 60 mph, if there is a change in the road, such as a pot hole, a dip in the road or an overpass transition, the steering wheel shakes violently until the vehicle comes to a complete stop or under 50 mph. The vehicle was taken in to the dealership for repair and picked back up the 27th or December. The shaking steering wheel started back up again 1/10/19. The vehicle is currently waiting to be dropped off at the dealership in two weeks when a loaner will be available.

Jan 112019

Wrangler

  • 9,500 miles
Driving on the 355 tollway driving 76 mph, I went over a bridge that had a slope (bump) and the Jeep started shaking violently. The steering wheel was uncontrollable. Being in the middle lane I had many "near misses" of other cars potentially hitting me. I let off the gas peddle and had to pull over before the shaking stopped. Being the family car, I am no longer driving in fear of an accident may occur. I contacted the service department but am hesitant to drive the Jeep there.

Wrangler

  • 100 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Loose steering, wandering on the road and difficulty staying in a straight line when on uneven roadways. When going over bumps the vehicle pulls to one side or the other and when you try to correct it the steering over-corrects and you get into a back and forth wobble. At highway speeds this is very dangerous.

Steering is sloppy. The vehicle wanders and takes significant effort and constant adjustment of the steering wheel to keep it in the lane. Too much free play in the steering. This happens at any speed even at 30mph.

*update* been to the Jeep dealership 4 times and going back for a 5th for the "death wobble" and "wandering steering". they've tried to fix the wobble, by replacing the stabilizer/damper with an after-market, which they completed, but problem still exists. Sidenote* I opened up a case w/ fca and they are telling me this should have never been done but may have been done because the oem new model stabilizer was on back-order. Replaced the after-market stabilizer/damper and put on another oem and yet, the issue still exists (death-wobble). "steering wandering" has never been fixed. I've got another appt. At another Jeep dealership on 1/14/19. Will update after my appt. To see if there's an improvement.

When I crank up my Jeep start backing out of my driveway and make the turn to get on to the roadway my steering wheel locks up as I amd driving foward almost causing me to have an accident. Then about 1/2 mile down the road I came to a roundabout, it was almost impossible for mento enter and exit the roundabout, and for a second time in less than one mile the locking up of my steering wheel could have caused me to wreck and kill myself or someone else. This has happened to me 4 different times within the 7,000 miles my Jeep has on it, somthing needs to be done before a life is lost to this defect.
