Saturday 11-2-19 while driving on the freeway I hit a slight bump going over a bridge and my Jeep started shaking uncontrollably. I slowed down and it stopped when I got to about 40mph. While driving home on the same day I had the same thing happen again on the same freeway after hitting a bump at a seam in the road going over a bridge. This has happened once more since then but seemingly on the other side of the vehicle so now it has happened twice on what feels like the drivers side front and once on the passenger side front. I am now nervous driving as most of my miles are done on the highway and in Ohio they can't seem to get the seams over bridges smooth so now I am white knuckling it every time I have to go over one. I stopped at the dealership on 11-6-2019 and was told there is a recall for the steering damper that needs done, I have an appointment on 11-8-19 to get this fixed. I have not had anything mailed to me letting me know of a recall and I just had my Jeep there for service 2 weeks ago (oil change and tire rotation). If there was a pending recall should they not have attended to it without me having to experience the underlying issue in the first place" when I enter my VIN number on this site it doesn't show any pending recalls, does Chrysler/Fiat know of the issue and only deal with it when you have it or is there an actual recall that should have been sent out" when doing 70 on the freeway it is not always easy to slow down or get over without possibly causing an accident...they need to get this taken care of and correct any underlying issues before people start causing accidents and someone ends up dead!

Had the recall for the steering dampener done a couple months ago. Experiencing extreme vibration and jerking of the steering wheel and vehicle after going over minor imperfections in the road. Online research finds it to be the "death wobble" where I have to slow the vehicle down below around 40mph. Has happened three times on the highway since getting the recall. Did not happen prior to the recall.

My son was driving his 2018 Jeep Wrangler on the highway shortly after having a recall repair done for steering wobble. When he drove over a change in pavement, the vehicle started to shake uncontrollably. The car was difficult to control, but he was able to slow down enough to get to the side of the road.

Follow up to safety issue id 11164549 (stock vehicle) dealership replaced steering damper per "star" recommendation at 2830 miles due to complaint of "wobble". I have driven without an issue until last week at 8450 miles when I hit a transition/bump in the road. Jeep "wobbles" all over the road and doesn't stop until speeds are below at least 40 mph- not exactly safe to do on the freeway! took Jeep back to dealership and they (again) replaced damper today (recall part V-41). First bump in the road and the Jeep started to wobble. Waiting for a response from the dealership. This vehicle is not safe to drive and this recall is pointless! paperwork from the dealership states: "the factory recall concerns a significant safety or operational issues. There is risk to you and others should you drive the vehicle without the factory recall services being completed. We advise you therefore not to drive the vehicle until the factory recall is performed. So, recall done....apparently it's still not safe!!

Similar to the October 30th post, during cold mornings (below 45), when first getting on the road I have had severe steering issues. On two separate occasions in the past week, while trying to make very slight left turns to stay on the road, it has felt as if power steering no longer functions. During my drive this morning I had to slam the brakes and pull very hard to the left to avoid driving into the safety rail (I was going approximately 40 mph on county road). The condition gradually improves and within 5-10 minutes appears no more. A few days earlier I made it less than a mile down the same road and the steering was so unresponsive I turned around as I felt the vehicle was unsafe to drive and took another vehicle to work. That morning my tire sensor showed very low pressure so I assumed that was causing the steering issue, but upon talking with Jeep service the tire sensor alarm is likely due to low temps and the steering should not have been affected. I spoke with local Jeep service department this afternoon and they are having me drop off the vehicle tomorrow to investigate the issue.

I bought this brand new and did not modify it. A few months after purchase, it started violently shaking after I hit a bump at highway speeds. On 3/7/19, the dealership replaced the steering wheel dampener. It still wasn't fixed so I brought it in again on 4/12/19 and they replaced the same part. It seemed to fix it for the most part but now it's back to the violently shaking at highway speeds. I have an appointment on Thursday 11/7/19 for them to fix it again so I can drive my brand new car. I have read that this is not a safety issue, but I assure you it is. I can't control the steering wheel until I slow down to about 45. Going from 65 to 45 on a highway while the whole car is shaking is in fact a hazard. I am going to request copies of my service contracts when I get to the dealership on Thursday. If you should need them, I can send them to you.

When driving over speeds of 60 mph on the highway, and hitting even the slightest of bumps, my Jeep steering was uncontrollable, and I imagine this is the "death wobble" I have heard about occurring in Jeep. The only way to manage it was to slow way down to 35 mph and avoid bumps of any kind.

On 9/30/19 at 4:30am, odometer reading of 170 miles, while at highway speed, approx 70 mph, on I-295, the vehicle began to violently shake. It was uncontrollable until my speed reduced to 35 mph. At 35 mph the shaking began to subside while I continued to slow to a stop. The incident appeared to be triggered by a slight bump or seam in the pavement. On 9/30/19 the vehicle was serviced at cherry hill Dodge Chrysler Jeep, 1708 w. marlton pike, cherry hill NJ 08002. They determined cause to be faulty steering damper and replaced it with part number 68251580ad which I was told was an improved part over the original. At first the problem seemed to be resolved. Then on 11/3/19 at 9:30pm, odometer reading 1,490 miles the violent shaking occurred again. Circumstances were the same, traveling at highway speed, approx 70 mph, had to reduce speed to stop the shaking, again on I-295 but different location, again apparently triggered by a slight bump or seam in the pavement.

We drove our 2018 Jeep Wrangler about 15 mph down a residential street, slowed down, turned right, and the steering wheel locked up! it would not move at all and the car was still running. We had purchased the car on Oct. 1, 2019, from a local car dealership. The dealership had been using this car as a loaner vehicle for four months. The next weekend we traveled to sugar grove, il, to visit relatives. On Saturday afternoon, one owner entered the passenger side of the car to program an address in the navigation app. He used the acc function without fully turning on the car. After 15-20 minutes, the co-owner entered the driver's side of the car and did not turn the acc off before pushing the brake pedal and starting the car. That is when, after a slow right turn, the steering wheel locked up and would not budge. The driver turned the car off and then on several times and then tried putting the car in reverse. Finally the steering wheel moved. We were several hundred miles from home in a car that did not feel safe. We called the nearest Jeep dealer, which was in North Aurora, il. It was late afternoon and almost closing time, but they told us to bring it over and they would see what they could do. They entered the car's VIN in the computer and found that a recall for a steering damper (V41) had not been done. They did not have the part in stock, but were sure that this would not have caused the steering wheel to lock up. Next, they did some tests on the vehicle but did not find anything. We felt extremely nervous, but drove it home and took it to the seller's dealership. They replaced the recalled steering damper and did a tsb 08-092-18 to address a steering issue. Then they told us that there were no guarantees that it wouldn't happen again because they did not know what caused the steering wheel to lock up. This extremely dangerous safety issue needs to be addressed!

Driving on the interstate and hit a bump in the road around 65mph when the violent death wobble happened. Grabbed the steering wheel with both hands and was able to steer to the emergency lane and slow down to about 35mph when it stopped. I continued on my way and haven't had the problem return. The Jeep only has about 6300 miles on it. It has never been driven off-road. I have always felt the steering has been rather loose for a new vehicle compared to others I've driven. Contacted the dealership and they said there is a recall (V41) for a steering dampener part that is on backorder that should take care of the death wobble. We shall see...

Wrangler

  • 100 miles
I noticed as soon as the temperature dropped below 45 degrees that the steering became stiff/difficult when turning. I will give a couple of examples of this issue. On one occasion, I was pulling out of my driveway and was attempting to turn left onto my street. The steering wheel did not want to turn and I had to muscle through the turn. On another occasion, I was turning on a expressway ramp at the position of the steering wheel felt as if there was a knot that I had to roll onto either side to control the vehicle. The issue with my vehicle happens when it's below 45 degrees and the vehicle is cold. The vehicle is in motion and the issue is more prevalent on the street and less prevalent (but noticeable) on the highway. The problem only occurs when turning. Last winter I asked the dealership to look at the steering and they reported everything was fine. This winter (2019) I brought the vehicle in for service. The technician reported he found the issue online and corrected the issue. Unfortunately, the issue is not resolved and the vehicle is still dangerous to drive.

My 2018 Jeep Wrangler, stock, highway driven only, had its damper recall completed and immediately had the death wobble happen several times. Very scary and dangerous. The dealers tell you they did the fix, but it does not work. Someone is going to get killed. Jeep must be made to fix this problem now. There fix is only a publicity statement, not a fix. Please help. Others say they can fix it but it costs about $3,000. The warranty should fix it.

Traveling straight at 72mph (cruise set) on interstate 69 crossed a slightly rough bridge expansion joint. Vehicle started to violently shake. Severe steering wheel oscillation. The shaking stopped when vehicle was slowed to around 20mph. Jeep has approximately 6,000 miles. The new steering damper recall has already been installed. The Jeep has the steering damper recall already installed. Consumer stated took the Jeep back to the dealership 11-26-19. The V41 replacement of the steering stabilizer had been installed backwards. So far no issues with the steering.

Just had the steering damper recall performed - never had any wobble issues before completing the recall. I completed the recall as I thought that was what good car owners do. Now, just 3 days later I am experiencing the wobble at highway speeds. Very scary! had the entire family in the car coming home from dinner - did not hit any irregular bumps or anything out of the norm. Was driving on the highway on a stretch we drive almost daily and out of nowhere, just hitting some "normal" Michigan road bumps the steering wheel and front end started shaking. It eventually stopped itself - but then happened 5 more times. We did not know what was going on as we were not aware of the issue or even why there was a recall repair. After getting home and searching the internet I found all sorts of complaints and the reasoning behind the recall. Ironically again, I did not have the issue before I had the recall work completed. After reading the article I immediately left a message for my service manager at the dealership and then looked under the Jeep to confirm that in-fact the part was replaced and had the correct part number. I do want to mention that even before the wobble I did mention to my wife and notice that I thought that the steering was a bit more "loose" after getting the car back. Not sure if that is relevant, but thought I would note that here as well.

The first time I experienced my steering locking up on me I was going through an S curve about 15-20 mph and when turned to the right my steering wheel suddenly felt as if it was stuck in that position about 30 degrees to the right of center. I had to yank the steering wheel to the left really hard in order for it to break free from that locked position. This scared me so much I drove my Jeep straight to the dealership. The dealership proceeded to check for recalls or tsb's and other computer checks and couldn't find anything. From there they tried to replicate the steering problem but could not so I was left with no answers. After reading many posts of other people with the new jl model having the same issue I decided to leave my Jeep outside in the cold and test drive it when the engine is cold. I found that my steering wheel felt like the power steering was out. The steering wheel was catching in many places, but again worse to the right. In my opinion it seems to be some kind of power steering issue.
