Who knew a $45,000 car could be a complete piece of garbage?? The staff at the Jeep dealership were also pieces of garbage which certainly doesn't help. The day I picked up this car I regretted it. A five minute test drive truly isn't enough... The transmission in these cars is horrendous and this is considered to be normal, meaning I cannot do anything about it. The shifter on the car went bad at 39k miles or so and I thought this may help, but no, it did not, not even the slightest bit.

Of course none of this was under warranty. Chrysler would not compensate ONE penny for an issue that should never happen at 39k miles. I learned my lesson for not buying a luxury car... I've had a Mercedes SUV that I purchased a year prior to the Jeep and it has not had ONE issue!!! You would think the Mercedes would have all these problems!!!

Lastly, why can I only get a loaner car from the dealership I purchased the car from?? That is the biggest load of bulls***...

Grand Cherokee Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,500 miles

My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with less than 52,000 miles, and only one owner, started to struggle with shifting gears after being started when the car was cold. I looked on line and saw many complaints about this model and year's transmission problems. I took it to the local Chrysler/ Jeep dealer to be looked at and was told that I need to replace the transmission at a cost of $6500. I asked the service rep at the local dealer how could this happen with a car with low miles. His response was that he could not explain it. He stated that the transmission fluid looked good. The most concerning comment that he made was the transmission had failed mechanically. The local Chrysler service rep provided the contact information for FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) at 800-992-1997. I filed a case today with FCA, and they stated that I would hear back within a day. The powertrain warranty on this vehicle is 5 years/ 100,000 miles. I am beyond the years, but well within the miles. It will be interesting to see how FCA responds. If FCA refuses, then I will have to look for other remedies.

Update from Dec 18, 2020: FCA ( Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) contacted me and offered me 50% of the cost of the repair. The original quote from the dealer of $6500 was dropped to less than $4400 with FCA's dealer warranty contract. My decision was fairly obvious that I could pay $2200 versus the original dealer quote of $6500. The transmission that I need for the repair is backordered. I asked FCA to provide a free rental. The dealer repairing the car said that he did not expect to see a new transmission until after the first of the year. FCA said they could not help with a rental. FCA claimed that the $4400 replacement transmission quote from the dealer should have been $1000 more and they were covering the cost. I am disappointed in the fact that a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee for $42,000 car had to have a transmission replaced with 52,000 miles. I am thankful that at least I did not have to pay for the full cost of the transmission.

Grand Cherokee

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,000 miles

Okay... I know I have the worst possible JGC year. I'm the second owner, acquired at 20k miles, currently at 43k miles. It's been the same issues from the start. Everytime I've taken it in, and give them the very same description of symptoms each and every time... they tell me they "cannot duplicate the problem". I'm positive the original owner has something to do with it as well, but what doesn't make sense is the dealerships inability to figure it out. I've experienced electrical issues as well as engine/transmission issues. I've experienced the lack of power, hard down shifting and up shifting, slight knocking noises coming from engine bay (which a service tech told me were "normal engine sounds" what?!), hesitation and vibrating while speeding up and even slowing down! My car won't throw any codes, so they say there's nothing wrong.

A few weeks ago as i was attempting to merge onto an expressway... I went to hit the gas before the next car came over the overpass... and my car was stuck! RPMS jumped nearly to the red line whislt my car if anything moved like a snail. I began trying to get over as close to the shoulder as I could, bracing myself impact! Suddenly my car lunges forward then the RMPS drop. If I didn't have that space to the right of the car, I'm certain the car coming from the over pass would have smacked right into the back of me. That was just ONE of the many sh*tty experiences I've had with this car. I know what a v8 should feel and drive like... this isn't it.

Needless to say... I'm ready to dump this thing. But I have a question... please grace me with your opinions. I want to get rid of this Jeep year... but I DO love the look of the WK2.. I really don't find any other brands "appealing to the eye" at the moment. Would it be worth it to try the newest year JGC??? Or should I abandon the Jeeps completely? I want to have hope that they've improved.. but to be honest I'm scared.

The solution to the problem is to replace the shifters. At least in my Jeep, there was a red light indicator that stated, "Service Shifters" and it came on every time I shifted.

My problem is that the dealer sold me a vehicle protection plan from Fidelity Warranty Services for $2949 to cover 'any' foreseeable problems. I chose the Gold Plus coverage plan. It covers the transmission but...apparently it didn't cover the 'shifters' which is the problem. What a bunch of Bullsh*t!!!

Taking son to school and when accelerated the car went into a jerking motion. when I let off the accelerator it would stop the jerking motion. engine light started to flash and then eventually it stayed on. Definitely worried about the safety of my child, myself and others not knowing what is happening. Took it in and still don't have it back. cost is $828.31 and has something to do with an intake coil. Not happy this Jeep has been in the shop more than on the road. I called Mopar and was hung-up on. Nice customer service.

I've tried pre-starting and warming the car, I've tried slow acceleration, I was told by the tech to turn off traction control, none of these things have helped.

AS reported with most others, if I accelerate, it sometimes sticks in a gear and the RPM's start to rev. When the transmission finally catches up, it upshifts hard creating a jerking. I have had this issue for 2 years and know there's no fix. I have had it 2 years with no transmission issues, but I would imagine such hard shifts will create a gear issue before 100,000 miles.

This is a new Jeep Grand Cherokee to me. The SUV only has 11875 and I made the first long trip with the SUV last weekend. First it is a very hard shift 1-2-3 at low speeds and it is hard to make sure the Jeep is in gear or park. I am taking into the dealer this Friday.

I understand there are many class actions suits against Jeep currently going on related to the transmission problems.

Grand Cherokee Laredo

  • Automatic transmission

Bought the vehicle used several months ago, about a month after i purchased it, i noticed that whenever the vehicle has been sitting overnight, the initial acceleration is delayed like the transmission isn't finding the right gear. Typically, the result is the cars RPMs jump and almost red line, when you let off the gas pedal, the transmission will then engage and find the gear.

Have had it to the dealership, they did a computer upgrade, but were unable to recreate the problem.

Grand Cherokee Overland Diesel V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,000 miles

My wife and I both have Jeep Cherokees I have the Grand Cherokee diesel version she has the gas V-6 both cars have a very disconcerting problem with the transmission has delay or hesitations that when trying to start from a stop causes the hesitation. The diesel is especially susceptible to the delay when making a left turn from a stop it will feel like the engine has quit running and the vehicle will hesitate, I will push on the gas pedal harder and the engine will kick in and take off like a bat out of hell. There is no smooth transition regarding this process.

The hesitation has almost caused accidents when pulling out from a side street to the main street making a left turn. The car will hesitate and almost stop before it takes off. I've had this vehicle in the shop and my wife's car in the shop as well for this transmission problem and all they do is reprogram the main computer. We were told that the transmission stays in a neutral meaning it doesn't find any kind of gear to go into until the computer makes its mind up where gear it should be in.

I love this car except for this problem is a major nuisance and I will definitely not by another Jeep unless this issue gets resolved under warranty.

Grand Cherokee E V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 6,000 miles

Soon after purchase I began having problems with Electronic Stability Control and bad shifting. Jeep attempted to fix the problems several times. They then put in a new transmission because the vehicle started to buck like a bronco and they found metal filings in the fluid.

The new transmission did not fix the problem. When I start off from a cold start the transmission revs very high before shifting, spins out before the next gear and shifts rough. Sometime I try to drive very slow and use the paddle shifter which is also annoying. I like the Jeep once it gets going because it has a good suspension, road feel and is comfortable. Because of the shifting problem though I would like to return it to Jeep for something else unless Jeep/Chrysler/Fiat can promise me somehow, someway I can hang up my spirs. ( Jeep Bronco )

Grand Cherokee Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

So, I bought this car used and it drove fine. As a matter of fact I don't even drive it much since I use air travel for work and work mostly from home. But a few months after purchasing this JGC I started noticing that the transmission would hesitate to move from 1st to 2nd as well as 2nd to 3rd gear and sometimes 3rd to 4th gear. This is extremely noticeable when the car has not been used for a few ours or sitting overnight. It is annoying and embarrassing, seeing as how 'new' the vehicle is and also how much it initially cost.

This is something that I think definitely needs to be recalled by Chrysler, with as many complaints as I've been seeing. I also have 2 other factory recalls that need to be taken care of, but dealership near me has the absolute WORST service reputation and they are really slow and inconsiderate. Has anyone had any luck with service and solutions in the North Florida Area?

Hi again! Ever since I bought this Jeep Grand Cherokee, when shifting into Drive and accelerating it would jerk or hesitate. I told the mechanics about it and they told me there was nothing wrong with it, that it was just shifting. I also told the mechanics about the other problems also (motor light on dash) ,and they said there was nothing wrong. So I am very concerned about my Jeep. It is still on warranty but I just wonder what is going on with it.. I want it fixed so I can depend it because I travel on the highway a lot. I bought it at Anderson Chrysler in Prince Albert, Sask..

Grand Cherokee Loredo 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 200 miles

I've had several Jeep vehicles, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee's and unfortunately, the 2014 Grand Cherokee is a disappointment. Like every other complaint I've read hear, my biggest issue is the hesitation with the transmission.

When I am stopped a traffic light and press the accelerator, the vehicle starts out and then feels as if it has stalled to the point where I feel myself leaning forward, when all of sudden, hurrah, gas to the engine and she takes off like a rocket. I thought it was gas but it's obviously a hesitation in the transmission. A very dangerous situation to be in.

I find vehicles behind me punching the gas and passing me, thinking I am a slow driver or something. Then when it kicks in, I'm passing them. Engine idle screams and the gears start shifting.

At first I thought, break in period. While I don't drive as far as used to with work being nearby now, at 12k miles and a year and half old, I would have expected to pass a break-in. I though maybe, Chrysler is getting carried away, 8 gears? Too close of a ratio for shifts to be smooth on an automatic in my opinion. I never had issues when I owned a manual shift since I could control everything. I got tired of using all 4 extremities driving in traffic :-) By the time I got to work I felt I already had a workout so automatic it is.

Sadly, I purchased the vehicle so I can't walk away from it after 3 years and I'm worried now about what the resale will be, more importantly that I don't have an accident because of it. Very poor roll out of product. I would not believe these vehicles were not fully tested and taken thru harsh testing. Shame on you Chrysler if you were aware of this and went ahead knowing you are putting lives in danger. I will look at another company's product, probably foreign, after my many years of being a hard and fast Jeep owner.

For as long as I've had this Jeep, I have complained about the awful hesitation/jerking/noise. When taking off, engine hesitates and I am afraid one day I will be rear-ended due to this. You have to punch the gas to get it to go, then it really jerks. Switching gears are really hard, you can feel each time it switches. When going up to 40mph between 6-8 gears you can hear an awful ticking noise in the cabin.
