On 3/27/14, my brand new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee spontaneously burst into flames and almost got in my face. After smelling and seeing smoke, I pulled over into a dirt parking lot at a business and the dashboard of my new vehicle burst into flames, after I heard a "woosh." A lady from the local business came running out of the business with a fire extinguisher and I was able to shoot it into the holes that were once the heat vents to kill the flames. The dash was buckled, the windshield blackened, the gauges melted, the roof lining gone, the visors melted, and the inside covered with CO2 and smoke damage. I suffered smoke and CO2 inhalation and my clothes were ruined, but I am lucky to be alive! the dealer refuses to help me....updated 09-10-2014 updated 11/7/2014

Grand Cherokee 6-cyl Diesel

  • 2,000 miles
While driving uphill, in wet or rainy conditions, the new Jeep diesel 3.0L engine starts to hesitate, this causes the vehicle to vibrate severely. The first occurrence was at 40mph, after taking it to the dealership they reflashed the tcm which I believe changed the shift points in the transmission, while driving home the same problem occurred, this time at 45mph. I took the Jeep back to the dealership where they reflashed the PCM, when driving home the same problem occurred, this time at 50mph. This engine hesitation causes severe vibration, I am worried that if the engine cuts out at this speed, it will cause a serious accident. I have video footage of this occurring.

Evts inoperative, no blue light. Took to dealership and found wire to evts emergency button severed, possibly shorted. Repaired wires, did not correct condition. Replaced with new evts, condition repaired successfully. At same time also had recall N58 performed, reprogram instrument cluster ABS / al. Then at 4040 miles oil change due light came on and had the first oil change done. The check engine light came on a very short time after that and back to the dealership at 4654 miles. Said it was a defective oil pressure sensor, sensor was replaced, cleared codes and found no additional problems. Now at about 12000 miles the oil change due light never came on, but took the car in for an oil change anyway. Now the check engine light along with a low oil pressure light came on, car did not want to shift or speed up, got off the road and had car towed to dealership waiting to be repaired again.

Our Jeep Grand Cherokee has been has been having electrical problems. Several different electrical problems occur after which the check engine light will illuminate. Of these electrical problems the dangerous ones include: Headlights shutting off, dashboard completely shutting, and vehicle shut off while in motion. We have had the following replace in our vehicle: Burnt wires in our engine harness, faulty solenoid, alternator, PCM, and ABS module. The issue still occurs. Purchasing the vehicle in Dec we've brought the vehicle back into the dealership for service 3-4 times. While we haven't filed for lemon law yet, Jeep promised us that they would take a look at replacing our vehicle after a number of problem. Their answer to us was to wait to see if the issue occurred again. While we may file for lemon law, we feel that it will be important that we report these issues as they are experienced by other consumers on forums across the internet.

Check engine light came on, took to service garage. Diagnosed with ck dtc's-P0302 #2 cylinder misfire. Service department claims they road tested -issue cleared. I picked up the vehicle, drove approximately 5 miles with same issue. I called dealer, they said to continue to drive the vehicle for a week or so, and see if it fixes itself.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Consumer writes in regards to acceleration problems. The consumer immediately noticed upon receipt of the vehicle, that it did not drive smoothly and lacked power during acceleration. However, she felt it was due to lack of familiarity with the vehicle. The performance of the vehicle deteriorated to a point where a problem was evident. Frequently, not all the time, the vehicle was very sluggish to accelerate and occasionally not respond at all for about ten seconds as the RPM's went up. It felt as the though, she was forcing the gas by pressing on the accelerator pedal, but the gas was blocked from flowing, or the vehicle was stuck in a low gear and not up-shifting. Also, the check engine light illuminated, with only 1,231 miles. The consumer had to return to the dealer, several more times, due to the check engine light illuminating.

Soon after taking possession of this vehicle (9/27/13) I noticed that now and again (4/5 times) there would be a hesitation from the automatic transmission when shifting to the next higher gear when accelerating to highway speed. It was so subtle that I filed it under "nothing is perfect", but would keep score. Don't be misled by the low mileage above. That is my new normal. A head and neck injury in 2001 followed by a long overdue diagnosis of severe ptsd by the va left me practically a "house hermit" and driving anywhere involving distance requires hiring a driver. This vehicle was nothing more than my being able to have access to the woods with a 911 button attached to keep the P/a in check. What happened to me was that from a stop sign I turned onto the main highway and was accelerating to 55 when at about 50 the transmission hung, this time it would not release to the next gear, the engine began to struggle until it almost stalled. As unexpectedly as it had hung the transmission shifted, the engine immediately recovered ""with a roar"" and off we went. (extra RPM's, ? computer/fuel pump saw no problem) I'm sure that in those seconds my speed dropped 20 mph's with no "warning", such as brake lights had someone been behind me. Had this occurred entering a busy belt-way, interstate, etc., you can imagine the possible may-hem. Did some research, got an appointment for service at the dealership and was told (as expected from research) their computer saw no abnormalities and showed me a blank piece of paper to prove it. Asked them to sign a piece of paper saying my drivetrain was "just wonderful" and reaffirming that Chrysler had never heard of any problems just in case I or others wound up dead or maimed from "no problems". I now have a "moral problem" sitting in my driveway and not out in the middle of the woods.

I was driving on the highway about 65 mph. The wipers came on and the radio stopped. This happened on three other occasions. Upon exiting the freeway and utilizing the brakes, the entire vehicle electronics flashed then the vehicle lost all power and stalled into blackness. I was able to safely stop the vehicle and restart.

Shortly after starting vehicle and driving at approx 10 mph, check engine light came on. 30 seconds later check engine light started flashing and misfire was felt, car began to shudder. I pulled over, turned off and restarted, again flashing check engine light and shuddering. Vehicle was towed to dealer, who also felt misfire on cold start next am and codes confirmed misfires in multiple cylinders. Dealer inspected engine but found no issues. Next day, car operated normally. Approximately 1-2 weeks later, on starting vehicle entire instrument cluster lit up, with check air bag warning and lights indicated ABS failure and ecs off. Car drove, but I subsequently realized speedometer did not work, it was very frightening to drive on highway without knowing my speed. After restarting check engine light remained on, but vehicle functioned normally. Was going to bring back to dealer, but check engine light went off after about 6 drives. These issues are very worrisome and I feel uncomfortable every time I start the ignition.

Continuously exhibiting persistent progressively worsening life-threatening transmission and electrical failures. Transmission sticks in low gear and will not upshift, transmission stalls, push gas pedal to the floor and nothing happens, almost hit numerous times, gears jerk, rpms rev up and speed increases when applying brakes, will not slow down then bounces to a stop, interior lights short out, doors do not lock, electronic chirping sound from engine even when off, touchscreen/radio/climate controls do not work, total of 45 different defects, continuous since day purchased, sent 2 written notices to Chrysler, has been 8 months and no one will help, increasingly fearful for safety. Total of 43 days in shop and 14 attempts to repair same serious safety defects and conditions.

The driver pulled the automobile into a driveway on a downhill slope. The driver shut the vehicle off using the push button start/stop. The driver returned to the vehicle 10 minutes later, with a passenger in the front seat. The driver started the vehicle (foot on brake as required) using push button start/stop. The driver engaged the transmission into reverse using the shifting lever (with foot still on brake as is required by the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system). When engaged in reverse, the engine revved to a high level, and the car traveled in reverse up the hill (driveway), through the street, and into a ditch. Side and front airbags deployed. Driver believes they never took foot off the brake, and the braking was not sufficient to overcome torque of the engine/transmission. Vehicle damage includes air bag deployment, cabin roof liner detachment, three bent wheels, minor damage to muffler, minor body damage. Dealer checked electronics/instrument recordings and noted nothing unusual appearing, and had no knowledge of similar problems.

In Feb. 2013 I purchased a 2013 grand Jeep trail hawk edition, in span of 3 to 4 months the Jeep was in the service department 6 times trying to fix issues. Jeep was unable to completely fix the problems to my satisfaction, I was given incentive to trade in for a 2014 grand Jeep Cherokee limited edition, which was running great until this past Thursday. On Thursday I started my Jeep it barely would idle, I proceeded to get on the interstate which is when the vehicle started jumping up and down like I was going off road. It would suddenly change to neutral without me doing anything, it kept missing gears and barely running. I was barely able to get off the exit. When I got off the exit it would barely idle and again shifted to neutral without me doing anything. Eventually I safely made it off the exit and into a parking lot where I got it towed. The tow truck driver could barely pull it up on the trailer. When it was placed on the trailer it wouldn't stay in park, it kept trying to shift out of gear. There needs to be some type of investigation in the grand Jeep Cherokee models and how they are passing inspections through production line because obviously for a consumer to get two defective vehicles in 7 months is unacceptable and unbelievable.

Vehicle is slow when shifting in low gears; pulling away from stop lights/signs feels as if the car is not in drive and going to stall. This could result in being rear ended since so many drivers speed away when light turns green. It seems like it stutters during shifting. Having it in eco-mode highlights the issue further. The down shifting at higher speeds feels like a stick shift car, not normal or comfortable. Even on the highway acceleration is often not very responsive during entrance and passing. The gas pedal is very touchy, no way to pull away slowly, just takes off; this might be part of the issue, confusing the sensors during shifting. I contacted my sales person who said he'd have a service tech contact me, no calls yet. I wish I had checked this site and edmunds before buying, as I would have chose a different manufacturer. This is my 4th Jeep gr Cherokee, unfortunately the least desirable, my '09 had zero issues and original brakes at trade in with over 105,000 miles; '14 is likely my last.

After taking my new Jeep into dealer because the "check engine" light came on, I was told that there were 16 stored codes but they could find no problem and the computer was reset. Two days later the check engine light again came on. I took back to the dealership and was told "there is a leak in the fuel tube" we have to replace it but we will have to order the part; we don't have it in stock. I was told "it is safe to drive"...a leak in the fuel tube-what the heck is leaking-is safe. Ok, but two trips to the dealer with less than 2,500 miles is a bit much. I have a 2006 Jeep, same make/model that had 1st major repair (water pump) at 145,000 miles....so much for improved models. I am very concerned that this is a harbinger of future issues.

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the manual for the vehicle stated that the engine should shut off when the key fob was removed from the vehicle. The contact parked the vehicle in a residential garage overnight and the following day, he found that the vehicle was still powered on. The vehicle was taken to the dealer because the failure caused the catalytic converter and fuel pump to fail. The engine became extremely hot and remained on even after there was no more fuel in the vehicle. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told that they would not assist due to user error. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure and the current mileage was 1,093.
