About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Car will not start, told issue with independent power distribution module failure. Told there are recalls but not on my VIN. Reading issue could also cause vehicle to stall if issue occurred while driving. Did have power train recall done and was told could be related.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Consumer writes in regard to vehicle problems with emission devices and re generation protocol. The consumer stated the vehicle goes into safe mode.
While driving on the roadway and highway my vehicle will randomly kick itself into neutral and will kill the engine with no sudden warning and or warning lights that there is a problem. The battery will remain on but the engine is off. This has happened on 3 separate occasions since I purchased the vehicle in 2015 more recently this issue began in 2019. After attempting to restart the vehicle it will attempt to turn over the engine but will not start, leaving me stranded in the middle the the roadway. 50/50% chance the engine light will turn on and unknown error. The only way I have been able to move the vehicle is to remove the battery cable and let it sit for 30 minutes resetting the electrical system. Though this is a short term fix. I have contacted multiple Jeep dealers in the area and everyone I have talked to has advised me they have never seen or heard of this problem. This is a safety concern loosing all power to my vehicle while driving on the roadway and highway. I fear that this will cause a greater problem to myself and the public if the issue is not fixed. I can see a catastrophe if the problem is not fixed. I took my vehicle into a Jeep dealership to have the electrics recall problem fixed a few years ago when I was advised from Jeep unknown exact date. This is a liability and lives will be hurt including myself if this problem is overseen.
Yesterday out of nowhere my passenger headrest deployed, I wasn't in an accident I was just parked and the headrest just popped out of place. I call the dealer and they told me is over $600 of repair. I don't understand why I should pay the repair when it is a vehicle malfunction.
The windshield wipers will not turn off and the turn signal blinkers do not work. All was working; the next day the problem started. Started the vehicle and the windshield wipers started even though the switch was off. The continued windshield wiper problem made it easy to identify that something was wrong. Took it into the dealer for a recall problem (safety recall U65- reprogram powertrain control) and had them look at the new problem, too. The multi function switch was fine but the vehicle needed a new vehicle harness and would cost over $3,500 to fix and install. The dealer would have to order the harness because they do not have any in stock. The dealer charged $145 and kept the car for two days to tell me that. Have disconnected the battery several times in an effort to reboot the vehicle computer. Looking online this is not the only time this has happened. The problem is unresolved.

Our daughter purchased this 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and within 18hrs of purchase the Jeep wouldn't start. The Jeep does not respond to the push button start and no codes appear once the Jeep is able to start. On one occasion driving down the road the dash lights blink then turn off and back on. It has left her stranded on at least 5 different occasions where it took over 2hours before it would start. The car battery has been replaced, key fob battery replaced, body control module, and the dealership is still trying to track down the problem. It's been in the shop for almost a solid month. She has only driven it the equivalent of 24hrs since all this started.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that he experienced several failures with the vehicle. While driving various speeds, the contact heard knocking and banging sounds coming from the engine without warning. The check engine warning indicator eventually illuminated after the failure persisted for some time. The contact drove the vehicle to port jervis Chrysler Jeep Dodge (131 kingston ave, port jervis, NY 12771, 845-856-6211) where the transfer case was replaced; however, the failure continued. The transmission was ultimately replaced twice by an independent mechanic. Also, as the contact was closing the rear hatch, the contact noticed smoke coming from both license plate bulbs. The contact immediately shut off the vehicle and removed the bulbs from their sockets. The contact called an unknown dealer to have the bulbs replaced and was given a quote of $250 per bulb. The light bulbs had not been replaced. Also, when the contact activated the cruise control, the cruise control continued to function even when it was attempted to be disengaged. The contact had to place the vehicle in neutral in order to disengage the cruise control. The contact also experienced several other failures with the vehicle, including other electrical, engine, and suspension failures. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and stated that there was one recall on the vehicle. No further assistance was offered. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 40,000.
Vehicle experiences random illumination of multiple instrument cluster warning lights, loss of cluster illumination, loss of speed display, and loss of ABS and ESC system functions. Sometimes vehicle shifts into 3rd gear, and does not respond to shift commands. This occurs randomly, sometimes right after start-up, sometimes after a few minutes of driving.
Service 4WD illuminated on the dash. Traction control and ABS lights lit up and cruise control disengaged while going down the road. The vehicle is now in the shop for an expected ABS module failure.
In 2018, the A/C first went out and we went to mopar to have it assessed. We were told it was not a "charging" problem but electrical and need the dealer. A few weeks later, without any intervention the A/C came back on. In June 2019, the A/C went out again and the dealer said "faulty tipm" and the repair with diagnostics would be close to $900. How does a 4 year old car with less than 50K miles incur a brain failure"! I guess it could happen but researching the topic I see Jeep has a long history of faulty tipms with only 1 recall. Why does NHTSA allow Jeep to rip off customers" it seems clear that Jeep has a consistent history of installing faulty tipms so they can reap $1,000 repairs. You cannot see the A/C not producing cold air so I will skip uploading a picture.

The "service gear shift" warning has appeared while the car is in motion (6 times) and while parked (1time) and the transmission feels like it is starting to slip and will gear down while driving. The next thing that occurs is the wipers will start on their own and can not be turned off. After the wipers are triggered then the next message will say "until you reach a desired location you may not be able to shift again until serviced". next another random message will appear and then the screen will go blank. This includes all digital functions of the dash. Such as speedometer, fuel gauge, tachometer, etc. Service engine warning lights are the only thing that will appear. The last time this happened on Aug. 2, 2019 the car would not allow me to shift into park or turn the car off. I had to put on the emergency brake and get under the hood where the fuse panel is located and pull the ignition fuse to disable the car. We have officially been to byers Chrysler llc. 7 times and have an ongoing communication case with a corporate Jeep care associate. We have mutiple videos that can be seen of the actions of the car. Three times the car has been returned to us with nothing done except clearing the error codes it generates while this occurs. It is unsafe to drive and is now at the point where it will not safely park and turn off. The image I am including states the the car should be shut off to engage park but it will not allow me to this. I have to pull the fuse while the car is still in gear and running with the parking brake on. This is as unsafe as it can get and there is no clue why this is happening. We have currently spent $1600 to fix the problem and have had no remedy.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the head lamps were replaced more than three times and the fog lights were replaced more than twice due to the light bulbs shorting out without warning. Lithia Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of concord (4901 marsh dr, concord, ca 94520, (925) 246-2295) retained the vehicle for over three weeks because the part for the head lamps was on backorder. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.
I have a service shifter light coming on constantly as well as some random radio station changes. It all started after last recall was fixed. I love my Jeep but am so frustrated.
A message displayed in our screen that the 911 car phone needed servicing and to contact the Jeep dealer. At that point the gps malfunctioned, the front and back defrosters started to function at full speed at 78 degrees and absolutely none of the radio functions were useable. Uconnect sent Jeep dealer an update for the radio and the update failed. We were told our Jeep needed time the radio to be replaced. But we could only get a refurbished radio and there weren't any available. It has been 4 weeks and uconnect informed us that there has been an additional delay on the refurbished radio. We requested a new radio be installed and a rental car provided to us until the radio is fully functioning. We are informed by both Jeep dealer and uconnect there is nothing that can be done for us until the refurbished radio becomes available. This is totally unacceptable. A new radio vendor should be used. Uconnect is inadequate to service their product in a timely fashion, cannot provide a new radio replacement in stock, and only can offer refurbished radio replacement and cannot give a date when one will be available. We live in Illinois but are vacationing in California and our car is stuck on 78 degree defrosters.running full speed. No gps or any other features associated with the radio.
No low battery warning light, only show a warning if alternator is bad and not charging battery. Thus, car can stop without warning due to low battery because of wear and needing replacement- without warning. When this happens, everything in car works on electricity can cause a very bad accident if stops in traffic. Also, with no key override when the car electrical module will not read to the key fob if you are in or out of the car you can not open doors or windows or turn on or off anything, if doors/windows locked when this happens this is very dangerous-no way to get out or in. If stuck in the desert without help and car module stops picking up key fob one is sol. Lots of complaints online. Very unhappy with the fact that Chrysler creates recalls only for a select few when they know that they continue to use the same faulty technology on most of their cars they build. My rear door module stopped working and I had to replace it and it cost me over $500. When going online I see that Chrysler had a recall for this problem for older models but would not cover the newer years although they used the same faulty technology on them as well. Fortunately, I had just parked my car in the garage and did not lock the doors so we could still get in it and have it towed.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 35 mph, the low battery voltage warning indicator illuminated, the windshield wipers activated, and the display screen went blank. The contact heard an abnormal noise before the engine turned off. The contact made multiple attempts to start the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. An independent mechanic stated that he could smell smoke from the alternator. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact called marburger Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (located at 1310 E dixon blvd, shelby, nc 28152, (704) 484-0049) to notify them that the vehicle was experiencing failures similar to what was listed in NHTSA campaign number: 17V435000 (electrical system). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 53,000. Consumer has replaced the alternator.
