There is a leak at the transmission cooler. Looking on line, this appears to be a common problem. I notices the problem when I tried to accelerate up a hill and the transmission would not shift to the proper gear, and the car slowed and I pulled off to the side of the road to not block traffic. This was dangerous and I was not happy. I turned the car off and on, and it seemed to work fine. The dealer service department located the problem to be the transmission oil cooler leak causing low transmission fluid/oil and making the car not shift properly. I was driving/accelerating up hill at the time. The Jeep dealer at folsom California has the car now.
This is the letter I sent to Chrysler: I'm the owner of a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2012, with VIN [xxx] as I was repairing a flat tire I noticed something very strange and very dangerous happening in my vehicle. I?M a mechanical engineer by trade and in my 60 years of life I have seen and work on a lot of different cars and I know that can happen in situations similar to this. The portion of the visible threads on the front axle came out of the shaft like removing a sleeve and crumbled like bread crumbs what is to say that the portion of the thread engaged with the nut on the shaft (which isn't visible at this stage) won't have the same end results" what can happen to a car driving 65 ml/H on a highway when a front wheel will fall out? is my car just a black sheep? is the lot that my car was produced something out of ordinary" the amount of rust has destroyed the threads on the visible part of the axle. In my opinion this is a disaster waiting to happen. I have purchased extended warranty when I purchased my vehicle and I will be at the dealer tomorrow to repair it I would like Chrysler to evaluate the problem and take the necessary actions to fix the problem preventing life's being lost. As you can see from the photos there are no signs of threads left on the axles. Evaluate better. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The failure was persistent. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. Engine revs up intermittently with no explanation, have discussed with dealer and they must be able to duplicate before covering under warranty. Dealer admits this is a warrantable issue. Problem is is that it only happens every 2000 to 4000 miles. Virtually imnpossible to duplicate. Severe hazard while driving on highway. Have to pull over and restart car tp cprrect problem.

My 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee has the 3.6 liter pentastar V6 with the 5 speed automatic transmission. It has the quadra trac 1 full-time 4X4 system. The transmission is very "clunky" and feels unsure of what it should be doing. Upshifts come early, at low speed and RPM's. often this is not an issue, but sometimes causes the vehicle to feel extremely underpowered. Pressing the accelerator further will eventually result in a downshift and a resulting clunk in the driveline. Low speed driving on curvy roads is not a nice experience with this vehicle. Downshifts are abrupt and anything but smooth. There is often a clunk that can be heard and felt while decelerating for an upcoming curve. The best way to describe the feeling is riding with a person who is learning to drive a manual transmission car for the first time. Not sure if this complaint is recall worthy, but I worry the transmissions indecisiveness is going to prematurely wear the driveline components. Perhaps a software update for the transmission would be a good place to start.

Day 1....car just stopped out of no where a picture of a battery showed up and the car just stopped and shut down on its own day 2....took car in to get a new battery because that was totally dead but on day 3...the battery did not fix the problem the car once again shut down on me and this time it was in the middle of the freeway I was stuck for a couple of hours cant even jump the car cuz it still wont start it so I had to get it towed off the freeway.. midday of day 3 discovered it was the alternator and finds out there were for 4 recalls on my car so I took it to the Jeep dealership. They stated they can only fix 3 out of 4 of the recall due to not having all the parts and informed me it will be done before the day is over. 4:30pm came around and I called to check in on the car to see if it was ready the worker stated yes come pick it up so I did and when I was almost home the same problem the car shut down on me so I called the dealership to take the car back in before it fully shut down altogether. Day 4....dealership called me about 11am and stated ok theres nothing wrong with it and I can go pick it up so I stated ok but about an hour later when I was about to be on my way the dealership stated wait do not come pick it up yet because there is something with the computer system of the car and that the steering power is not connecting to the alternator and is shutting the car down but the part to fix it wont be in til tommorrow. Day 5..still waiting for my car to be fixed..... please if there is anyway I can just simply swap this lemon with a different car that would be great I have a 4 year old and this is a safety hazard and according to one of the recall the car can crash without notice.... help me pleaseeeeeee...updated 08/06/15 updated 12/23/2015

The contact received a notice for NHTSA campaign number: 15V115000 (electrical system) and stated that the parts were unavailable. The dealer was uncertain when the parts would become available to service the vehicle under the recall. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 47,000.
Was driving down highway approx. 65 mph when transmission appeared to jump out of gear, engine rev'ed to approximately 3000 to 4000 RPM's, coasted a distance and the car jumped back into gear and I continued on. The check engine light came on and the eoc signal turned off. This has happened on numerous occasions. The second time the dealer had it for a week+ and rebuilt the transmission. It happen again and they said they fixed it and it did not occur until just last week and it happen twice then. I was preparing to take it back this morning and when I got in the vehicle the check engine light was and it is now running fine. There was a 3 month period that it did not occur and as I said it happen twice last week. I purchased this used with 42500 miles on it, it now has 46500 miles. The dealers hayes Chrysler has done an outstanding job and has been very cooperative, but this is starting to get frustrating. Not sure if this is a safety issue, but likely it is. I have spoke to a couple of owners and they have had very similar stories about this vehicle. Please look into this issue.
3/28/2015 (20,924 miles): This is the second time my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee has stalled when I put it in reverse after starting. I started the Jeep and put it in reverse and I began to back out of a parking space and it stalled. However, when I looked at the display showed that the Jeep was in park, however the shift lever was still in reverse, and the radio was still on like the car electronics were on. I moved the shift lever back into park. I pushed the start/stop button but I could not get the vehicle instruments or radio to shut off. I tried several attempts to start the vehicle, however it just clicked once and the starter did not engage. While my foot was on the brake, I put the gear shift in reverse and then back into park. I again tried to push the start/stop button and this time it just kept cranking but failed to start. The vehicle started to roll while the dash displayed P and I was in a level parking lot. When I stepped on the brakes they were hard to press. I used my phone to call moss bros service and they transferred me to the moss motors riverside, ca service center. I explained my situation but all service advisors were busy. I waited on the line for over 11 minutes and someone came back on the line and told me that someone would call me back. See call log from phone records below. I explained to the operator that if I could not get the vehicle to turn off that the battery would eventually go dead. After waiting on hold all this time I attempted to push the start/stop button one more time and this time all controls seem to shut off. I was driving on the 241 toll road up a steep hill going approximately 65 mph and the engine down shifted into a lower gear, the engine began revving high, the RPM went high, and I lost speed. I pulled off to the side of the road. I put the vehicle in park while I called my husband because I did not know what was happening to the vehicle. I wanted to let him know in case I was stranded on the side of the road. We decided we wanted to try to get the vehicle home, if possible. I put the vehicle back in drive and got back on the highway and it did not do it again and I made it home.
My wife was driving the vehicle when all of the sudden the engine started to rev and would not shift up or down. She could only go maybe 20 mph - people passing and honking on a 4 lane road. She found an area and pulled off the road into a retail parking lot. She put the car in park and then shifted back into drive and the issue continued as the car moved but the engine rev'ed without shifting to the next gear. She put the car in park and called the local dealer, where she was told to call Chrysler road side assistance and have it towed in. The dealer took a look at it the next day and could not make it happen again. They said they re chipped it I believe(reset the electronics). This same issue happen again approx. 30 days later and it was towed in and they could not find any issue. They said we had to take the vehicle back and there was nothing they could do. We have had the vehicle towed twice now both in the morning taking our daughter to school. We cannot trust this vehicle and are looking at selling it. That is what the dealer suggested as well.
My 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee encountered the same problem as stated in the Chrysler recall P54, which is the recall for 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The engine would stall while driving, and it also encountered not start problem as well as the not start on the first attempt problem. Even the car could start, the engine would stall again shortly. The problem is resulted from the faulty tipm, which is the same on both 2011 and 2012 model. However, only the 2011 Grand Cherokee is being recalled. So I urge Chrysler to initiate a recall on the 2012 model as well.
Letter from congressman barber on behalf of constituent regarding a mechanical malfunction with his 2012 Grand Cherokee overland; attn: Taj sultan. The consumer stated on occasion, he would brake and accelerate simultaneously to avoid rolling backwards. He soon discovered, while doing so, with the Jeep, it would creep a few feet into the intersection, and there would be no acceleration for about five seconds.
This has happened 3 times, the first time I had just gone through the dulles toll and as I paid the toll and pulled off the engine did not stay in drive, it went into 1st or 2nd gear. The second and third time I was again driving on the beltway and the gear switched from drive to neutral or a lower gear. Each time (3) I had to pull over and stop and go into park and then back into drive. Don't know if it's an engine, gear or power train issue. Also almost daily when driving, the engine sounds like it's pulling/straining and not going all the way into drive. This is happening in the winter and summer (any time of year, not weather specific). I always warm the car up before driving it. When the engine is not having this issue, it drives very smoothly. The issue happens 75% of the time (except when I take it to the dealer, it always drive smoothly when they take it out). Have taken it to the dealer and complained but the response has been that when they took it out to test drive it, it was fine and they would have to keep it and do several test drives to see if it will replicate the situation. Because I need my vehicle to get back and forth to work each day and they are not willing to pay for a rental or provide a loaner, that isn't possible. I don't have the funds to rent a car and pay a car note. I received the recall for the issue with the brakes so hopefully my experience with the brake needing to be pushed on firmly will go way when the part's come in (huge back order, on waiting list for parts). I also get the car serviced regularly (when it's time) so I know that's not the problem.
