CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.
From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.
By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.

Since I bought it at the dealership the car hesitates to start, I took it several times and they couldn't find the fault, they said it could be a problem with the battery so I changed it and it kept doing the same thing. thing, they told me what the tank was. of gasoline I took it to a Nhtsa office and they told me that they would change the part, over time I had the same problem again but now a year has passed and the car no longer starts, from the beginning they have not helped me solve the problem problem. problem problem that comes from the factory.
The Horn has stopped working and it appears to be the Clock Spring. This is a safety hazard as it can cause the airbags to engage randomly or NOT engage in the case of a crash. This is an expensive repair that should not be at the expense of the owner since it is a defect in the Clock Spring. I am aware that there have been Clock Spring recalls on other models of Jeeps, but not on this one.
This vehicle stops while driving. It happens when it comes to a stop or slow down. Will turn off. In some instances I have lost my power brakes. This has been happening since November of 2022. The dealership has replaced the recall part, the fuel pump relay. Still happens. They thought it could be low transmission fuel. No, still happened. They have driven it over 100 miles and it wouldn-??t replicate for them so they say they cannot fix it because there is no check engine light on. This is a safety hazard.

I-??m driving the vehicle and it will not shift out of park after putting it in park. I had to turn the car off in order to get it to shift out of park. This happened to me twice
This is a widespread complaint as it happens to every Jeep with leather dashboards. The leather starts to wrinkle & shrink, releasing it from the dashboard mount itself on my 2011Grand Cherokee Overland, which started in 2014. I tried to no avail to get Jeep to repair it under warranty, they denied it every time. In January 2020 I complained on Twitter about it & tagged Jeep in it, Jeep Cares contacted me and after a few messages back & forth, me providing pictures and my VIN, they told me I was entitled to a "X81" Extended Warranty for the leather to be replaced at no cost. I contacted dealer as they suggested & they told me to bring it in so they could see it & order replacement leather. We were in the middle of a World Wide Pandemic so I have waited to have that & many other issues fixed. When I went to dealership yesterday, I was told the X81 expired in June 2020, 6 months after I was told of it. I was NEVER told of any expiration period or I would have taken it in, I waited because of the Pandemic. EVERY leather dash by Jeep/Chrysler does the same thing as mine, they need to be responsible and cover it. I don't know the validity of it, but I've read this can cause premature passenger air bag deployment, that scares me.
I was leaving home from work and my car started perfectly fine and I drove like 50ft and the car completely shut down. I tried to jump it car to car but it was draining the other car batteries so I got a tow truck to come out and it jumped the car enough to get it in neutral and then it cut off. I changed the battery and alternator and It cuts on them after about 5-10 min it completely cuts off and won-??t turn back on again. Lights on the dashboard pop up too before it cuts off.
As I am about to turn right my vehicle completely shuts off and I lose power steering, etc. Brakes work enough to stop thankfully, but vehicle is completely off almost causing a crash. I am able to start my 2011 Jeep GC right back up and go on with the engine light on. The light then shut off as I am driving. After reading multiple cases of this same issue it is apparent something needs done and a resolution needs issued. This is an extreme safety issue and needs addressed now before injury or death occurs. I love Jeep but I do not think I will be able to get another (after having 3+) if this does not get addressed. Get this fixed and addressed now.
I bought this jeep from BurkenKotter in Castle Rock Colorado back in april and ever since it stalls on me on the highway randomly and i lose my power steering and brakes and scares the crap out of me. it-??s done this over 10 times over the 5 months ive owned
I was driving on the freeway at 50 mph with my family in the vehicle when I pressed the break pedal I realized my brakes didn't worked the pedal went all the way down to the floor with no stop at all when I pull over to the side with emergency brakes my truck started smoking from front of engine I opened the hood and it exploded in my face almost burn inside this vehicle thank god we made it out alive from the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
On 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has no battery icon on the cluster displaying whether it's overcharged or low charge. While I was attempting to jump-start the SUV due to a dead battery on the driveway. Another issue is the transmission once the vehicle is shifted from park to drive while parked uphill or downhill it makes a clunking sound while shifting gears.
Passenger side headrest air bag popped a few months ago smacking me in the back of the head. Didn't think much of it, couldn't reset it. Got an email about how it was available for service and dealership said there's no such thing after looking at. Seams strange the headrest airbag would just pop and mot be resettable.
Our Jeep continues to stall while being driven, making it very unsafe as the power steering and power assisted brakes stop working when the engine stalls. This is the subject of several recalls, most recently V62/NHTSA 19V-813 issued a year ago. What is happening to correct this dangerous fault with our Jeep. We have experienced multiple stalls since 2015 failed recall and they continue to this date, always while braking and mostly while also turning to the right.
The alternator on my vehicle went out, there was a recall for them on the year make and model of my vehicle however my VIN was not on the list so I am unble to get it repaired
