CarComplaints.com Notes: The fourth generation Grand Cherokee took the relatively trouble-free run of the 3rd-generation and flipped the script.
From 2010 to 2011, complaints about the vehicle not starting increased 10-fold. In fact, the 2011 model year is riddled with engine problems and a defective TIPM might be to blame. The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) distributes power to all the eletrical components in the vehicle, so when it starts acting funny so do numerous other components in the car. Orders for new TIPMs were so abundant that parts became scarce, prompting a class-action lawsuit claiming Chrysler ignored this obvious defect.
By 2012 complaints dropped back down by about 80%. Needless to say, if you see a used 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee on a lot just keep walking.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
A/C-heating blend doors hot on one side and cold on the other no matter what the settings are on. Have recharged A/C and did not solve issue. Also, turned heater/de-froster to 80 degrees to defog windshield and was blowing cold air not hot.
Right rear door power locks do not work; all other doors work with main control and key fob. One must manually lock or unlock the right rear door. Per dealership it needs to be replaced with door latch P/N 4589922ah @ $340 total parts and labor plus tax. Safety concern for rear seat occupants.
When cruise control is on but breaking to slow down and turn in limited lighting (dawn, dusk, rain, snow) my Jeep completely shuts off - power steering, breaks, everything. It has happened multiple times now and I have to coast to the shoulder and re-start - thank goodness I have not been hit (yet). No errors or warnings read.
My car does not start at least 10 times a week, I believe its due to a faulty fuel pump relay and my VIN isnt part of the recall for this and it should be. Ive read many other people complaining of the same exact issue and I took it to fairfield Jeep where they told me one thing over the phone and then upon arrival it was something different and then the papers stated something else different!

Last week, I received a postcard in the mail from mcgovern Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram (newton, MA) notifying me of "an urgent air bag recall." The postcard was clearly designed to mimic an official notice, with a bright red background and yellow lettering, as well as dire warnings that "[I]N the event of a crash metal fragments could seriously injure you or your vehicle's passengers." Knowing that my vehicle was unaffected by any air bag recall (information that I confirmed through the NHTSA website after receiving the postcard), it was clear to me that this postcard was nothing more than a marketing tactic. While the postcard displayed correct information (my name, the vehicle's make/model, and the vehicle's VIN) and indicated in all-capital letters "recall: T59, " I also knew that the "T59" recall code was for a minor issue with a water shield in the vehicle's brakes. Accordingly, I believe that mcgovern Chrysler and/or Fiat Chrysler automobiles is attempting to use publicity around the recent airbag recalls as a disingenuous ploy to scare customers into visiting the dealership. Please feel free to contact me to discuss or if you would like any further documentation.
Dashboard delaminating, buckling, bubbling full dashboard warped. Air vents are warped and don't sit properly possibly affecting window defogger. Concerned if airbag on right side would work properly.
2011 Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee-outlander edition. Consumer writes in regards to on-going tipm failure-air suspension system & related injury sustained. The consumer stated the vehicle's suspension system created uncomfortable driving conditions. The vehicle bucked violently.
Within 5 or so minutes of driving, the car will shut off while driving. This has only happened as mentioned, within 5 minutes of turning on vehicle and starting your commute. It has also happened only under braking and turning circumstances. I have brought the vehicle into a Jeep dealership twice for this issue and both times they have replaced the fuel pump relay switch. The problem still persists. I would estimate this happens once/mo, however, it's happened twice in the last 3 weeks which obviously brought me to the point in which I'm documenting and writing a report. I called the same Jeep dealership this morning and they claim they are not aware of this wide spread problem and would need to dive deeper in order to properly understand the current issue. The service manager suggested that the oil levels could be low, which could cause this issue, but I regularly check my oil levels and this is not the issue. I've noticed that many others have had the same issue and it doesn't look like Jeep has determined what exactly is causing their vechicles to shut off while driving. It's a very scary situation, especially if a large semi or another large vehicle is barrelling down on you while you are under brake and turning, and then all of a sudden you lose power steering and the ability to accelerate through the turn/corner. I would like to better understand what Jeep is doing and what NHTSA knows about this issue and what our options are as a consumer. This is a severe safety issue that needs to be addressed and not by tossing parts at the problem that won't fit it, this just causes the consumer to spend significants amount of money without addressing and/or fixing the problem.
The air lift system failed and my car was very low to the ground and unsafe for driving. This occurred March 6, 2018. Dash leather is lifting and bunching. Started in June 2017 and is worse now. Passenger seat belt is sometimes jammed with passenger in it. You can move freely and my concern if there were to be a crash, would the seat belt work properly. None of these things should not fail in a 6 year old vehicle.
The dashboard leather has severely wrinkled which could effect the airbags deploying properly. I reported this to Chrysler customer service which did not to anything about it. They chuckled about the issue. The issue happened during the summer when the vehicle was parked in the garage.
Dashboard leather is buckling at windshield. There are many online complaints about this issue from owners but it is not currently a recall or covered item by Jeep. Jeep cares advised that the issue be reported to nhsta. Please advise if you can authorize a recall for this issue
The contact owns a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving unknown speeds, the rpms and all the electrical components went haywire. The contact drove the vehicle home. The dealer (neuwirth motors, 219 S college rd, wilmington, nc 28403) diagnosed that the tipm was never repaired on the vehicle. The manufacturer informed the contact that the manufacturer warranty expired and suggested that the contact use the extended warranty. The contact took the vehicle to a different dealer (victory Chrysler Dodge, 45 naber drive, shallotte, nc 28470) where it was diagnosed that the tipm was faulty and would cost $1,200 to repair. The vehicle was still at the dealer being repaired. The failure mileage was 132,050. Parts distribution disconnect.
The two front seatbelts are not retracting and causing the use of the seat belt to become null and void. Seat belts are not restraining. The body has rust coming from the doors, never been in an accident. Broken under arms 2nd time being replaced within 6 months
Vehicle completely turnes off while in drive mode, breaking or slowing down. Turnes off. This has been an ongoing problem. Brought it in to be looked at and nothing still turnes off while driving
Our 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls without warning. The issue usually occurs when slowing down and turning to exit the highway. We have had all recalls taken care of, and have had the Jeep in to the dealer several times for this issue with no resolution. The drivers ability to control the vehicle after the loss of power is significantly diminished. This has happened several times over the past year.
I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 2011 with the 5.7 4WD. Within the past 5 months I have had the Jeep die while slowing down to make a turn. It is as if you turned the car off. The first time I was slowing to exit hwy on a right hand exit and the car died on the ramp with other cars behind me having to slow down quickly so I could restart. The second time I was making a right hand turn and it died in the middle of the turn. The third time I was entering a roundabout turning right then left and it died in the roundabout causing others to slow and stop until I could restart. The fourth time (this week) I was slowing down on hwy from 55 to turn left across left hand lane as I started the turn the car died. As with all these, it was if someone turned the ignition off. No power to engine, steering, brakes. The times before I might have been hit but the speed limit was low enough that it didn't scare me, this last time I was scared. The approaching traffic was coming at 55 mph. I had no way to get out of their way. I had to hope they slowed down to let me coast across. I was lucky that they did slow down and saw me so I could coast across the left lane and oncoming traffic. I have seen reviews of others having these issues. I am taking the car in to Jeep to report but from what I have seen in reviews and complaints nothing is being done about this. I don't know if they have to wait until someone is killed or hurt before they anything is done about it. Based on my past experience now, I don't want to be that someone. I will be looking at getting rid of it if Chrysler doesn't do anything about this issues. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).'
As I was taking the exit onto the interstate, my steering wheel locked and my car stalled. It came to a complete stop. This is the second time this happens to me after taking a turn. Luckily no vehicle was driving behind me. I placed my car in park and restarted the engine. The first time I took my vehicle to the dealers and they stated that they could not find anything wrong. I noticed that other Jeep owners have had similar experiences. Jeep dealers should look further into this matter and pinpoint this issue.
