I had my check engine light diagnosed and found to be the esm shifter, an electronic device that connects the gear shifter to the transmission. It was said to me that this helps regulate that the transmission stays in the correct gear while driving. I have found that the transmission sticks in a certain gear even though it is not the correct gear I am driving in. I have found that I have had to pull over, put the vehicle and park so that it clears before going back in gear. I have also found that that process does not always work, when that has not worked, I would have to turn the vehicle off and back on for it to shift properly. I also had an incident that while using cruise control I was going up a hill so the cruise control kicked in to give the extra boost but it did not shift back down. I was quickly accelerating (almost to 90 in about 5 seconds) and being close to reaching 5rpms I had to turn off cruise control and shift into neutral for it to stop accelerating. Due to the extended warranty I purchased it was not covered. I have talked to a few mechanics and they all have said they have replaced multiple recently. When talking to Jeep headquarters, they stated that it has not been reported as a defective item. I was advised to contact NHTSA to report this in hopes that other have done so so that Jeep is required to make this a recall item. From what I have heard, it has been a fairly common item that needs replacing.

Headlights and dash lights flicker when on. They will usually remain on for approximately 5 minutes before they start to flicker. At that point the headlights and dashlights will flash off and on rapidly causing oncoming traffic and the traffic in front of my vehicle to panic. The flicker occurs even when the vehicle is turned off an the light control switch is left in the on position. I have not noticed the flicker occurring while the vehicle is turned off and the light control switch is in the off position. This condition could potentially be very dangerous depending upon the timing of the occurrence. I have conducted internet research on this topic and found that many 2005-2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have had this very same problem. Even more 2005 - 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have had electronic problems in general. My particular headlight problem has been attributed to an electronical control module which would cost close to $1,000 to repair or replace. I believe this to be faulty workmanship or the use of a faulty product by Jeep. The failure of an electronic control model is not the result of wear and tear. Therefore, I believe this should either be admitted and replaced by Jeep or made a safety recall. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Driving approx 50 mph, the Jeep quit, no warning signs, no power steering. Momentum got me off the road. Dealership wasn't able to fix the problem. This happened in March 2011. Sept 2011 I was passing a transit bus on the way to work and as I started to pull back into my own lane the Jeep quit again. No warnings, it just quit. I had to coast into the front yard of someones house because I had no steering. I sat for a few minutes, started it up and drove back home. The onboard diagnostics light, esp, bas and traction control lights were on. From that point the Jeep was running very badly. Dealer had my Jeep for 6 days and said it was a map sensor on the manifold. Got the Jeep back and backing out of my driveway in the middle of the road, it quit. A couple tries and it restarted. I'm very upset that this vehicle has put me in harms way on 3 separate occasions. I couldn't imagine driving on a twisting steep road and having it quit. I'm lucky I wasn't killed the day I was passing the bus. I'm not convinced the map sensor is the problem and I don't trust this vehicle. I drive a lot and Transport my kids. We are all in danger in this vehicle. Mainly because, it gives you absolutely no warning that it's going to quit, it just shuts down as if I shut the key off. I have only the ignition key on the keyring so I know it has nothing to do with heavy keys pulling on the ignition switch. I am not the only complaint, they are all over the web, it is an issue and someone needs to address it. This vehicle has become dangerous.

My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee continually has a problem with the entire control panel shutting down, gauges going to zero, A/C stopping, and headlights turning off when they are on. Recently the vehicle stabilization lights came on and a terrible grinding noise made. This has probably happened 30 times over the past year. It usually happens in about a 5-10 second time span. This past week it stayed that way for around 15 minutes. As sounds typical, the dealership says nothing is showing up. I've had it to an independent shop and the Chrysler dealership. This page is literally covered up with the same problem. Why is there not enough evidence on this one site (many others contain this same complaint) to do something about this" do I just have to take it to the shop forever and spend money only to never get anyone to fix it, or do I wait until I have a horrible accident? I don't really have the money to scrap an unsafe vehicle and start over with nothing. What am I supposed to do"

While driving home on the interstate last night, my dash lights and my head light flash on and off and sometimes they go off and will not come back on. I have taken it to the dealership and they told me they could not find the problem, and I would have to let it get worse and it would have to happen when they were driving it to see what was wrong with it..it needs to be fixed soon before it causes a crash and someone gets hurt.

At approximately 78K miles, vehicle would occasionally start and the only system that was operational was the radio. I cleaned and inspected all connectors that I could access, and problem appeared to go away. Then just after the warranty expired (80K miles) intermittent electrical issues have begun to appear. The transmission sometimes "sticks" in 3rd gear, the windshield wipers fail to function and when I attempt to turn them on it crashes the powertrain control module which then begins running random system errors, and the headlights sometimes turn off or fail to come on.

My dashboard lights flicker on my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee while driving when I turn on the heat with the fan. There are many complaints about this on the internet discovered with a google search. I called Jeep and brought it to their attention, but the person I spoke to didnt seem to interested and said nothing would be done unless NHTSA recieved enough complaints. There response seemed pretty lax for what I consider a major safety concern.

While driving down the road the dash lights will shut off and turn back on without warning. It almost seems like it shuts off but the engine stays running. The radio presets stay programmed. Has only done it twice in the last month and I've owned it for 3 years. Seems to do it in the extreme cold, but vehicle is fully warmed before I drive it. I usually let it run 20 minutes before I leave on days when it is really cold( usually below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) all of the gauge lights shut off, the radio, interior lighting. Haven't noticed if exterior lighting goes off as well.

I purchased a certified used 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2008 with 26K miles. Besides a malfunctioning electronic shifter in 2009 everything has been running great until 1/2/2011. At approximately 6:30pm while driving on the freeway at 65mph all exterior lights and interior lights (except for the map lights) began to flicker and then fail. The lights would come back on for a few seconds and then fail. The problem occurred intermittently over the next 30 miles and persistently worsened until I got home when the lights remained off for 15 to 20 seconds at a time. Each time it failed while driving I cycled the switch, cycled the brights and tried anything I could to get the lights to stay on. None of these methods worked. Upon getting home safely I turned the car off and restarted it only to have the same problem after two restarts. I went to bed and tried it in the morning and the lights worked fine for a 70 mile daylight drive to the dealer. Just received word from the dealer that they could not replicate the failure so there is nothing they can do. This vehicle is unsafe to drive and dangerous to others on the road in this condition even if it only happens once every two years.

Had complained to dealership that all lights on the instrument panel will all come on and go off at the same time, and will happen several times in a row. They told me to try wiggling the key in the ignition when it happened again. On said date this happened again while I was driving, but this time my ABS engaged, which stopped me in the middle of the road. Luckily, I was pulling up to a stop sign anyway. However, had this happened on the interstate, I would be devastated to know what could have happened. Also, it sounded as if my starter was trying to start again. I have done some research online and have found may people with the exact same issue who have tried many different things to fix the problem, but it seems as if no one has bee able to resolve the issue. The dealerships are even unable to fix the problem. How should someone proceed with an issue like this? it seems as if the government needs to step in and make Chrysler do a recall to fix the problem that so many of us are having.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee - all safety warning lights as well as engine lights flash on and off, RPM gauge drops, all lights around gear panel light, doesn't seem to know what gear it is in. Sometimes it is just the lights on the panel flashing on and off. No codes read when taken to mechanic. Put a new batter and alternator in the vehicle. Problem is intermittent. May happen a few times in a row and then go away for days or weeks. Lost power brakes and steering as well a few times, luckily no accidents resulted due to loss of power. You can hear a clicking noise when the panel lights are flickering on and off. This problem has been occurring for the last year and a half. I had a complete transmission service as well.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. Upon restart, the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the dealer could not duplicate the failure. The failure occurred again and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. Once again, the dealer could not diagnose the cause for the failure. The contact noticed that the vehicle stalled whenever contact was made with the key while it was in the ignition. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was advised to remove the key chains from her key. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 4,000 and the current mileage was approximately 24,000.

Two issues occurred that are likely the result of the same electrical problem with the vehicle. The first is the headlights will intermittently turn off without warning or cause. The second, the more recent of the two problems, is the entire dashboard will light up then power down completely. The vehicle still runs (engine) but all gauges drop as if the vehicle were off, A/C shuts off, radio shuts off, etc. When reported to the dealership they say they've never heard of it, although a brief online search turned up dozens and dozens of similar instances.
