This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
I do not remember exactly when the problem started, but while driving at night, my lights started flickering and then went out all together. I thought it happened when I turned my signal lights on, but I am not sure if this is the cause. I took it to the Jeep dealer and they could not find anything. Every now and then, I have the same issue, but nothing can be found. This is very dangerous for me and it terrifies me that someone will think I am flashing them and become angry. There is obviously something wrong if there are so many with this type of problem, but nothing is being done about it. I purchased as a one person lease vehicle from a dealership and within a year had to have my transmission replaced. I could not enter transmission in the parts section.
While driving in normal dry conditions this past evening unexpectedly all my interior gauges and dash electronics started flickering on and off to include the radio, hazard lights and everything inside. At the same time I realized I was also loosing my exterior headlights and also brake control because my car was essentially running but with no electronics. It started making a weird grinding pulsating noise that would accompany the flickering lights. This forced me to exit the road at a gas station. It then stopped and I began driving again only to have it resume shortly. Thankfully I was close to my destination and was able to shut the vehicle off for the night. This has happened occasionally in the past couple months during the day but this is my first night experience. I thought it was just a glitch but it is definitely getting worse and has become regular. The next morning I was able start and drive my vehicle to work and it repeated this behavior a couple more times. At days end I went to leave and now my Jeep won't start and hasn't for two days. All the electronics come on but when I turn the key it just clicks. I also had this problem in the past but when my mechanic looked at it he was unable to duplicate the problem.
For a few months now & without warning: The dashboard lights, tachometers, heater, and headlights flicker on/off, then go completely off. Then if applying the brakes, there is a ferocious grinding noise and loss of steering. Engine seems to slow down or not want to shift to next gear while driving. All this happens when there is flickering. Seems to happen at random but getting worse. Check engine light stays on for a day then disappears. I have video recording of these incidents. Vehicle has been checked but "nothing reports" so I am told it cannot be repaired.
We were driving home last night on a straight section of highway 50 East of carson city Nevada and the lights went bright then out then flickered on and off then it was okay. A short time later on the same highway still a straight section it did the same thing, I pulled over, lights went to normal. The traffic was light at the time thank god. This was on a 4 lane highway. The manufacturer should take care of this issue without hesitation and immediately. I have been reading lots of incidents like what we went through.
While driving under completely normal conditions, several severe problems occurred simultaneously; interior dash lights started flashing on and off, vehicle started sputtering and became unresponsive when trying to accelerate, grinding sound from left front wheel accompanied the other problems further adding to the vehicle suddenly slowing down while in motion. All warning lights were lit up when flashing stopped, but then a couple of minutes later while I was trying to limp into a parking lot to get the car off the road the dash lights started wildly flashing on and off again and the car continued to be virtually unresponsive when stepping on the gas. After shutting the car off and restarting it, the esp/bas lights remained on for a couple of days, but eventually went out, but the check engine light remained on. The problem happened again on 3/29/2013 while I was driving under normal conditions. It was sudden, unexpected and scary. With the right set of circumstances, it could be devastating and extremely dangerous. Once I started doing a bit of online research, I found many Jeep forums packed full of owners with the identical model and year of my Grand Cherokee that are having the same grave issues. It is clearly very widespread for this particular vehicle, and then I found the arfc page and I was astounded at the numbers of owners of my year and model who have also had hair raising incidents who have described the exact set of problems that I have had. Chrysler cannot ignore the massive numbers of people who are reporting the same defect issues. It is well beyond the realms of coincidence, and it is too dangerous to ignore. There needs to be a national factory recall asap before somebody gets killed.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the instrument panel lights illuminated and the vehicle immediately lost power. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where they advised him that the computer board failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 65,000.
Pulling away from stop sign my vehicle lost power (stalled out). The lights for park, reverse, neutral, and drive all came on at one time. Lost power for about 15 seconds then car starting moving again. This has happened a few times not just the one date listed here. This was the only time I was actually pulling out into traffic. Could have caused a major wreck. Sometimes it does it while driving down road and I have to pull over to turn car off. When I start it back again it runs fine for a while. Ever since this has been happening my airbag light and engine light have been coming on and off all the time. About a year ago, I had to have a speed sensor changed on the transmission cause the car would not shift through gears cost me around $800 because it had to be taken to a transmission service center. Are these problems all related? bought this car from a private seller (one owner) well taken care of. All maintenance was up to date when I purchased the car about 1 1\2 years ago. Is there any recalls on any of the problems I listed here?
While driving 55mph suddenly every dashboard warnings light, ignition, radio, headlights, etc. Turns on and off. Engine stalls for a couple of seconds each time this occurs. The same thing happened on a number of occasions. Dealer says they never heard of this problem and could not duplicate this problem when the car was in the shop. The car was at the dealer's shop on two occasions. The first time they said they couldn't find the problem and the second time they did something to the computer. The car is doing the same thing and is going back to the dealer on 2/18/13.
Suddenly every dashboard warning light, A/C, headlights, etc. Turns on and off. Dealer recommended to remove everything from the key chain (?!) so they knew then that there is an issue with the ignition switch. It helped for a while until same thing happened February 2013, but this time engine stalled for a couple seconds. I took it to the dealer and called Chrysler. Chrysler said it's going to be my problem until NHTSA issues official recall. Dealer will charge me $360 for a new ignition switch tomorrow. All 2006 Jeep owners - if you have the same problem - don't just read this, file a complaint. Looks like this is the only way to wake up Chrysler.
The Grand Cherokee stalled at a light on a hill. Restarted it and but it back in drive but vehicle continued to roll back almost rolling into car behind. Stalled 4 more times but in parking lots and non busy roads. Took it back to dealer where they updated software on computer and said it was fixed. Then stalled on a busy highway and was almost rear ended because vehicle stalled and wouldn't go into gear. Then parked it in parking lot and it stalled in park.
I purchased vehicle 2 weeks ago, November 115, 2012. Over a period of several days, all lights on. Instrument cluster light-up, gauges go crazy, loose power and ability to operate vehicle. Very dangerous situation since I was on highway at highway speeds. Also, headlights begin to flicker off-on at a high rate causing a dangerous situation. I have researched online and found numerous similar complaints for Jeep. I went to my local Jeep dealer today...no help. Called Jeep hotline, 800-992-1997, no help, claim they havent had a problem. This is a safety issue and Jeep should stand behind their product.
Starting October 2nd, 2012, my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee has not been shifting gears correctly and all options on the dashboard (park, reverse, neutral, drive) will light up. The car slows at this point and I have to pull over, put it in park, and then put it in drive again; doing that seems to reset it. This issue has happened about 4 times since and it's only October 6th, 2012 now. After doing research online, this seems to be a huge problem with other Jeep Grand Cherokee and a very scary one at that. Godforbid this happened to me on the highway and wasn't able to pull over; its an accident waiting to happen.
Since the day I purchased my certified used 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the interior instrument panel and dash lights have malfunctioned. The brightness flickers from low to very high, which is very distracting at night, some of the panel controls have since completely stopped working, and several times, all of the warning lights on the dash (seatbelt, airbag, check engine, etc) flash on and off while driving. This has happened at numerous speeds and times of the day. I video taped several incidents on my cell phone to prove it. Took it to the dealer and they said they can't duplicate the problem and the video means nothing. It happens more often, or is more noticeable, at night. They checked it in the daytime. Made no offer of any solution.
While at highway speed, on the highway, vehicle stalled, lost power steering, acceleration ability, braking and lights. Had to coast to the side of the road while narrowly avoiding other motorists at highway speed. This has occurred on several different occasions at speeds anywhere from 5-60 mph. Very dangerous and frightening. This has been reported by thousands of other Jeep owners and is eventually going to get people killed.
My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee continually has a problem with the entire control panel shutting down, gauges going to zero, A/C stopping, and headlights turning off when they are on. Recently the vehicle stabilization lights came on and a terrible grinding noise made. This has probably happened 30 times over the past year. It usually happens in about a 5-10 second time span. This past week it stayed that way for around 15 minutes.
While entering on ramp for highway Jeep shuts off... no more control since no power. Hit the guard rail. This stalling happen on many occasions while driving or in park. With passengers in vehicle very scary. Have spent more than $4000 @ dealer @ & manufacturer involved. With no resolution...but the stress & the dissatisfaction in the american product I'd like to buy that can't be fixed. I'm convinced I'll probably never buy american again. Very disappointed on how Jeep corporate handled the issue & left me with vehicle with these problems & told me case closed... trade it in.
My vehicle started originally slowing down like it slipped out of gear. I was told I needed a new transmission but when I replaced it I still had the same exact problem with the vehicle staying in limp mode and check engine light on, RPM running high and not going into overdrive. The transmission is not shifting correctly after spending over $1500 on it. From my research I have arrived at the esm to be causing the problem with the vehicle not indicating what gear for the transmission to shift into. I have called the Jeep corporate office and even though they know that the transmission needed a repair when I first bought it with 17,000 miles on it they still did not feel they were responsible for my transmission problems. To me that are just avoiding the fact that this is a manufacture issue with either poor design, construction or quality of parts. I had a 1994 amigo that I put 280,000 miles on and I never once had any type of transmission issue. This is a 2006 vehicle this is the poorest experience I have ever had with a vehicle.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the instrument panel lights would not illuminate and when trying to use the turn signals, the headlights would illuminate instead. The vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer nor repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 32,000. The VIN was unavailable.
On multiple occasions, the instrument panel has stopped working completely. The lighting in both in the interior of the vehicle as well as the exterior flashes and sometimes goes out completely. Multiple dealers have not been able to find a problem. It has caused near crashes before with the distraction of driving at night. The cruise control also accelerates without any warning while this occurs and the cruise must be reset by turning the car off and back on. This too has caused some near crashes as the car accelerates due to the faulty cruise control.
