The heat does not work to control the defrost. When there is no frost it is hard to see out of the windshield. People say the blend doors are bad in the ac/heater box.
Research has shown all 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with electronic dual climate controls will eventually require major repair in order to cure hot air/cold air blowing from vents when they're not set to do so. The cost to repair this issue, which has been known to pop up again after another 50K miles after repair, is generally $800-$1500 from a dealership. Should you opt to do this repair yourself, the entire dashboard will need to be removed, quite the arduous process, and parts are approximately >$300.
The contact owns a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When the contact started the vehicle, there was no heat coming from the vents located underneath the dashboard. The plastic vent doors are inoperable; therefore, cold air enters from the outside and freezes the windshield. The dealer stated that the repair would cost $1,800. The contact was informed that the failures were very common with his type of vehicle. In addition, snow and ice on the windshield will not melt due to the lack of heat coming from the vent underneath the dashboard. The failure mileage was 90,000. Updated 04-23-09 updated 04/30/09.
My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee has the HVAC blend door problem. It blows nothing but cold air and I could not defrost or see out of the windshield while driving. I am sure this will result in death, injury, or property damage, as I do not have the $1500 to repair and winter is here. A safety recall needs to be put into effect on these vehicles.
1. events leading up to failure: Windows fail to defrost and defog. 2. the vehicle does not have any heat or heated defrost on the driver's side. 3. dealer wants $1,200 to fix the problem.
The passenger window just fell down while driving on the tollway at 65mph. This is the second window failure that I have had on this vehicle. It is a 400. To 500. Dollar repair and a recall should have already been issued for this common problem with the Jeep/Chrysler products.
Visibility: Defroster/defogger system:windshield:blower the blend doors on the 2001 Grand Cherokee limited break causing a no heat condition which will not defrost the windshield in the winter causing poor visibility.
The windshield defogger-defroster and climate control system are faulty. He electronic heat controller has been replaced in the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited on 2 previous occasions and the fault still occurs. The flow doors of the heating system are sticking open and preventing warm air from entering the defroster ducts or the cabin heating ducts. The vehicle often frosts over the windshield and side windows while driving and can not be safely cleared. I have taken the vehicle to the Jeep dealership for repairs twice while under the factory warranty and once after it expired. The cost of the repair is over $1,000. A manufacturers safety recall is in order to repair this defect.
Less than 60,000 miles on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited and the blend door actuator & recirc. Door have to be replaced at over $1,000. Not covered by the extended warranty I purchased at the selling dealer 14 months ago for $2,784. (avondle Chrysler Jeep, avondale AZ).
Blend doors in the heating system will no longer function creating a safety issue due to the defroster not working in the morning. I have had this replaced once already and it is malfunctioning once again.
There is an ongoing problem with Jeep Grand Cherokee A/C blend doors from 1998 through 2005. There is a tsb issued for this problem, but it is not warranty covered after the original 36000 mile warranty. Per the tsb, the blend door assembly is poorly designed in that there is not range of travel stop on the actuator motor, causing the plastic shaft to absorb all the motor torque, eventually breaking the shaft. The problem is this is a design flaw which should be recalled. I had to spend 900 dollars to get mine fixed because the labor required to pull the dash. This problem exists over several model years of this vehicle per the tsb, and is fairly common. I feel the manufacturer should be required to recall these vehicles for repair. If the blend door breaks, there is cold air only, no heat, making winter driving potentially dangerous due to no defrost.
